Starfield supports cloud-save synchronization between an Xbox console and the Xbox App for PC when both use the same account. Steam is different: Bethesda documents a way to import an Xbox Cloud save into the Steam release, but its support guidance does not establish continuous, automatic two-way cross-save between Steam and Xbox.
What “cross-save” means for Starfield
Cross-save can describe two different behaviors. A true ongoing cross-save system keeps one cloud record synchronized as you move between platforms. An import workflow is a one-time or occasional transfer in which a save is brought into another release. Treating those as the same thing can lead to lost progress or incorrect expectations.

Xbox console to Xbox App for PC: supported cloud synchronization
If your PC copy is installed through the Xbox App for PC, Bethesda’s support instructions treat the console and PC versions as connected through Xbox cloud data. The key requirement is account identity: the same account must be signed in on the console and in the Xbox App for PC. Bethesda’s wording is, “Ensure you are signed into the same account on both console and on Xbox App for PC.”
What you should expect
After you save on one platform, the cloud copy may need time to update before the other platform can see it. Do not assume that closing one version and immediately opening the other will always show the newest progress. If the game reports that data is still syncing, let that process finish before switching devices.
Basic switching procedure
- Close Starfield on the platform where you were playing, allowing its cloud data to finish uploading.
- On the other device, open the Xbox App for PC or start Starfield on the Xbox console.
- Confirm that the same account is active on both the console and the Xbox App for PC.
- Load the game and check for the expected save. If it appears, continue from that file rather than creating an unrelated new game.
The account check matters because cloud saves are associated with the signed-in account, not simply with the physical console or Windows installation. Using a different account can make a valid save appear to be missing.
How to repair an Xbox-to-PC sync that is missing
Bethesda recommends a repeatable recovery sequence when a save does not appear on the other platform. This process is for the Xbox console and Xbox App for PC route, not proof that Steam will continuously synchronize with Xbox.
- Verify the account. Check the active account on the Xbox console and in the Xbox App for PC. Both must be the same.
- Load the game on the other platform. If you played on the console and the PC does not show the save, launch Starfield on the PC. If the reverse is true, launch it on the console.
- Create a manual save. Bethesda specifically advises making a manual save on that platform when a sync issue persists. A manual save gives the cloud service a new, explicit save event to upload.
- Close the game completely. Exit Starfield after creating the manual save rather than immediately switching devices while the game is still running.
- Wait briefly for cloud synchronization. Give the service time to finish processing the new save.
- Launch Starfield on the other platform. Starting the game there triggers another attempt to retrieve the cloud data. Check whether the manual save is now available.
If the save still does not appear, repeat the account check before making more saves. Creating many new files while troubleshooting can make it harder to identify which save is the intended one. Bethesda’s documented steps focus on account identity, allowing synchronization time and generating a fresh manual save; they do not promise that every sync delay has the same cause.

Steam: an Xbox Cloud save import, not documented continuous cross-save
Steam is a separate storefront and should be treated differently from the Xbox App for PC. Bethesda documents an Xbox Cloud save import path for the Steam release. In practical terms, the Xbox save is first made available through Xbox cloud services and then brought into the Steam installation.
The documented route
- Use the Xbox App for PC to load the console save. Bethesda’s support guidance suggests installing or using the Xbox App for PC when a console save needs to be prepared for Steam.
- Allow the Xbox cloud copy to update. Load the relevant console save in the Xbox App for PC and make sure the game has time to synchronize it.
- Use Starfield’s Steam import function. In the Steam release, import the available Xbox Cloud save as directed by the game’s save-import flow.
- Verify the imported file before continuing. Open the imported save and check that the character and progress are the ones you intended to transfer.
This is an import operation. Bethesda’s support material does not establish that a save made later on Steam will automatically return to Xbox, or that Steam and Xbox will remain synchronized after the import. Do not describe the Steam route as seamless two-way cross-save.
A February 20, 2025 fix
Bethesda says an update released on February 20, 2025 fixed an issue that could prevent Xbox Cloud saves from loading in the Steam release. If the problem continues after that fix, the remaining support path is to load the console save through the Xbox App for PC and then import the cloud save into Steam. That is a troubleshooting workaround, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every game version, save, add-on entitlement or mod configuration.
Comparison: Xbox App for PC versus Steam
| PC storefront | Documented connection to Xbox | What you do | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox App for PC | Xbox cloud-save synchronization with Xbox console | Use the same account, wait for cloud sync, and create a manual save if needed | No claim that a different storefront follows the same process |
| Steam | Import of an Xbox Cloud save into the Steam release | Load the console save through Xbox App for PC, then import it in Steam | Continuous or automatic two-way synchronization between Steam and Xbox |
The distinction is important when choosing where to buy or install the PC version. Seeing Starfield listed in both the Xbox PC catalog and Steam does not mean that a save created by one storefront will behave identically in the other.
Choosing the right setup before you start
If you regularly alternate between an Xbox and a PC
The Xbox App for PC route is the documented synchronization path. Keep the same account active on both devices, close the game normally, and allow the cloud service time to complete before switching. If a save is absent, follow the manual-save recovery sequence rather than immediately assuming the file is gone.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
If you are moving from Xbox to Steam
Plan for an import rather than a live shared save. First make the desired console progress available through the Xbox App for PC, then perform the Steam import. Keep the original Xbox save until you have opened and checked the imported file in Steam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want to move back and forth after importing
Bethesda’s documented material does not confirm that this will work as an ongoing two-way process. The safe expectation is that Steam import is a transfer feature with boundaries, not a promise that future Steam saves will synchronize back to Xbox. Consider the Steam installation a separate save environment unless newer official guidance explicitly says otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and why they matter
- Using different accounts: A console save associated with one account will not necessarily appear when the PC app is signed into another.
- Switching too quickly: Closing one platform and launching the other immediately can occur before the cloud copy has finished updating.
- Confusing Steam with Xbox App for PC: The Xbox app uses the documented sync route; Steam uses the documented import route.
- Assuming platform availability proves save compatibility: A listing for the same game on multiple storefronts does not establish identical cloud behavior.
- Overstating the February 2025 fix: The update addressed a problem that could block Xbox Cloud saves from loading on Steam. It does not guarantee that every add-on, mod setup or save element will transfer identically.
- Deleting the source save too soon: Keep the original Xbox save until the target installation has loaded and verified the imported or synchronized file.
What may not transfer identically
The support material reviewed does not establish whether every save element, add-on entitlement or mod configuration will behave identically after an Xbox-to-Steam import. That limitation is especially relevant when a save depends on content or configuration that differs between installations. Bethesda’s import instructions should therefore be read as a supported transfer path, not as a blanket compatibility statement for every possible setup.
The same caution applies to troubleshooting outcomes. If the Xbox App for PC can load the console save but Steam cannot import it, the documented workaround is to refresh the cloud copy by loading it through the Xbox app and then retry the Steam import. If a particular save still fails, the available guidance does not identify a guaranteed repair for every case.
Practical decision guide
- Your PC copy is from the Xbox App: Use the same account on Xbox and PC, wait for synchronization, and use a manual save plus a full restart if the file is missing.
- Your PC copy is from Steam and you only need to move progress from Xbox: Load the console save in the Xbox App for PC, let it sync, and import the Xbox Cloud save in Steam.
- You need automatic two-way movement between Steam and Xbox: The documented support information does not confirm that arrangement. Do not rely on the Xbox App synchronization instructions as evidence for Steam.
- Your import fails: Check that the February 20, 2025 update is present, refresh the save through the Xbox App for PC, wait for cloud synchronization, and retry the Steam import.
Bottom line
Starfield supports cross-save-style movement between an Xbox console and the Xbox App for PC through the same-account Xbox cloud-sync system. Steam has a documented way to import an Xbox Cloud save, including a February 20, 2025 fix for a loading problem, but Bethesda’s guidance does not establish ongoing automatic cross-save between Steam and Xbox. Choose the Xbox App for PC when you need the documented synchronized experience; treat Steam as an import destination and verify the transferred save before relying on it.
