1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRay-Ban Meta glasses do not support user-expandable storage. Their media is saved to built-in flash memory, and the official specifications do not describe a microSD slot, removable card, USB drive, or phone SD card as a capacity upgrade. If the glasses “do not recognize expandable storage,” the usual issue is a mistaken expectation or a failure to import captures into the Meta AI app—not a bad memory card.
The practical fix is to keep the glasses powered on and paired, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone, and restore the app’s Import function. The sequence below covers missing imports, pairing failures, Android update errors, storage-full situations, and when support or a warranty claim is appropriate.

What storage do Ray-Ban Meta glasses actually have?
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use fixed internal flash storage. It is built into the glasses and is not presented as a user-replaceable component. Current Ray-Ban product specifications list 32GB of flash storage, while the number of captures that fit varies by generation and by the mix of photos and videos you record.
| Generation | Internal storage | Published capture estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 and Gen 2 | 32GB flash storage | 500+ photos or 100+ 30-second videos |
| Gen 3 | 32GB flash storage | 1,000+ photos and 100+ 30-second videos |
These are manufacturer estimates rather than a guarantee for every owner. File size changes with resolution, duration, audio, firmware behavior, and the number of files already on the glasses. A glasses owner who records mostly video can reach the practical limit sooner than someone who takes occasional still photos, even though both devices have the same stated capacity.

The Gen 3 estimate also should not be read as double the physical storage. The listed capacity remains 32GB; the difference is the published capture mix and the way Ray-Ban describes expected use for that generation.
Why a microSD card, USB drive, or phone SD card will not work
The official product information does not document a microSD slot, removable storage bay, USB storage mode, or any user procedure for adding capacity. There is therefore no supported card format, maximum card size, adapter, or file-system setting that can make an external card appear as additional glasses storage.
A phone may have a microSD card, and a USB-C drive may work with that phone, but those devices remain phone storage. They can hold media after an import; they do not become an extension of the glasses’ internal flash memory. Inserting an adapter, connecting a drive, or moving a card between the phone and glasses cannot increase the recording space available on the glasses.

Do not treat an online report about “expandable storage not recognized” as proof that a particular card is defective. The glasses are expected not to recognize an expansion accessory because the official workflow does not include one. The useful question is whether existing captures can be imported and then removed from the glasses safely.
What the Import button requires
Import is an app-and-connection operation, not a storage-card operation. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the Import button should be visible when all of these conditions are true:
- The glasses are paired with the Meta AI app.
- The glasses are switched on.
- Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
- Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone.
- There are captures waiting to be imported.
If any one of those conditions is missing, the button may not appear even though the glasses have media on them. Turning on Wi-Fi matters even when the phone already has mobile data: the glasses use a temporary internal Wi-Fi connection for operations that need a fast transfer, including media import and firmware updates. Ray-Ban describes this as the glasses temporarily connecting to their internal Wi-Fi network.

That temporary connection is separate from buying a Wi-Fi service or joining a home router. Keep the phone’s Wi-Fi radio enabled and follow the app’s prompts; do not try to replace the glasses’ transfer network with a storage accessory.

1. Stop looking for a compatible expansion card
First, remove the unsupported accessory from the diagnosis. Do not spend time formatting microSD cards, testing card capacities, or buying a USB drive for the glasses. Confirm that your model is using its built-in flash storage and move to the import connection checks.
2. Turn on the glasses and check the phone radios
- Power on the glasses.
- Open the Meta AI app and verify that the glasses are shown as paired.
- Open the phone’s quick settings or system Settings and turn on Bluetooth.
- Turn on Wi-Fi, even if you normally use cellular data.
- Return to the Meta AI app and look for Import while unimported captures remain on the glasses.
Import can be absent when the glasses are powered off or when the app has no pending captures. If you have already imported everything, an empty Import view is normal rather than evidence of a storage failure.
3. Restart the app and the glasses
Close the Meta AI app completely, reopen it, and wait for the glasses to reconnect. If the Import button is still missing, power the glasses off and back on, then reopen the app. This clears a temporary connection state without changing the glasses’ stored settings.
4. Re-pair through the app’s settings
When a restart does not restore the connection, use the official pairing reset:
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Open Settings.
- Select Your glasses.
- Choose General.
- Tap Unpair glasses.
- Pair the glasses again with them in their case and powered on, following the app’s on-screen instructions.
Ray-Ban’s FAQ states that unpairing does not erase your settings. You should still allow the app to finish pairing before attempting an import, and keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled during the process.

5. Apply the Android force-stop recovery for an update-related error
On Android, an update-related media-import error has a specific recovery step. Open the phone’s system Apps settings, select Meta AI, tap Force stop, then reopen Meta AI and retry the import. Force-stopping is different from uninstalling the app: it closes the current app process so it can start a clean connection attempt.
If your error is not related to an update or media import, use the general restart and re-pairing steps first. Do not repeatedly clear data or uninstall the app while important captures are still only on the glasses unless support has told you how to protect them.
6. Import before deleting anything
Once Import appears, let the transfer complete before removing files from the glasses. Keep the phone nearby, leave the glasses on, and avoid switching off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi during the transfer. Confirm that the media is visible in the phone’s destination before treating the glasses as cleared.
A failed or interrupted transfer can leave captures on the glasses. The safe order is import, verify, then delete through the supported app controls. A factory reset is not a substitute for this process.
7. Escalate if the sequence fails
If the glasses remain paired but never expose Import, or if imports repeatedly fail after a restart and re-pairing, use Ray-Ban support or open a warranty claim. Persistent failure should be handled as a connection, firmware, or hardware-support issue—not by trying unapproved storage hardware.
How to tell a missing Import button from a full-storage problem
A full or nearly full glasses memory and a missing Import button can look similar, but they require different checks.

- Import button missing: Check power, pairing, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and whether any pending captures exist. These conditions determine whether the app can offer an import action.
- Import starts but fails: Restart both ends, then unpair and pair again. On Android, use the Meta AI force-stop step when the error follows an update.
- New captures cannot be made: Import and verify existing media, then remove it through the app so internal flash space is available again.
- Nothing works after recovery: Preserve unimported captures and contact support before resetting the glasses.
The app does not need an external card to make Import appear. It needs a live glasses-to-phone connection and pending media.

How to manage space when the glasses are full
Import on a regular schedule
Because capacity is fixed, the most reliable space-management habit is importing after a long outing, event, or recording session instead of waiting for the glasses to stop accepting captures. The published estimates—500 or more photos, 100 or more 30-second videos on Gen 1 and Gen 2, and 1,000 or more photos plus 100 or more 30-second videos on Gen 3—are planning references, not a promise that every combination of files will fit.
Verify copies before clearing the glasses
After an import, open several transferred photos and videos on the phone. Check that longer clips play through and that the number of files you expect is present. Only then remove the imported captures using the app’s supported controls. This protects against an interrupted transfer being mistaken for a completed backup.
Plan around video-heavy use
Thirty-second video counts make the storage trade-off visible: frequent video recording consumes the available space faster than occasional stills. If your use is video-heavy, import more often and carry enough phone storage for the files you intend to keep. A phone SD card or USB drive can be a destination for copies after import if the phone supports it, but it still cannot record directly from the glasses or expand their 32GB internal memory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do with unimported captures
- Do not factory-reset the glasses while important media exists only on them.
- Do not assume unpairing is the same as erasing: the official FAQ says unpairing does not erase settings, but you should still complete the new pairing before handling media.
- Do not format or repeatedly swap storage cards in the phone as a supposed glasses repair.
- Do not delete files until the phone copy has been checked.
- Do not keep retrying a failed update import without using the Android force-stop step when that is the reported error.
If a reset is being considered because the glasses will not import, contact support first and ask what recovery options exist for captures that have not reached the phone.
Choosing the practical solution
There are three meaningful paths; none involves buying a different memory card.
Best Value
- Get the most out of the moment with iconic Ray-Ban style and technology by Meta. Now featuring frames for a broader range of face shapes.
- Never miss a beat—ask Meta AI to take photos or videos, unearth information, create clever image captions or check out FAQ’s.
- Video call hands-free and share your POV so others can feel like they’re right there with you whether you’re cooking, watching a game or sharing core memories.
- Capture your world with an updated camera and built-in edit features. Take high-quality photos and videos hands free or livestream your point of view.
- Discreet open-ear speakers let you enjoy rich audio quality, music and calls without losing the ambient sounds of your surroundings.
| Situation | Best next action | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Captures import normally and the glasses are approaching capacity | Import, verify, and delete media regularly | Fixed-capacity storage management |
| Import is missing or fails while captures remain | Check power, pairing, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, restart, then re-pair; use Android force-stop for an update-related import error | App, connection, or pairing failure |
| Recovery steps fail repeatedly or the glasses behave abnormally | Contact Ray-Ban support or pursue a warranty claim before resetting | Possible firmware or hardware fault |
| Your recording workload exceeds the published capture estimates | Import more frequently or consider a newer-capacity generation after checking its specifications | Workflow and device-capacity fit |
Use your workload, phone compatibility, and warranty status to choose among these paths. A newer generation may publish a larger capture estimate for the same stated 32GB storage, but capacity claims should be checked for the exact model you are considering.
Common scenarios and the correct response
“I inserted a microSD card and the glasses ignored it.”
That behavior is expected because no official expandable-storage workflow is documented. Remove the card or adapter from the glasses setup and use the built-in storage and Meta AI import process.
“The app connects, but Import is not visible.”
Confirm that the glasses are on, paired, and holding pending captures. Enable both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone, restart the app and glasses, and then re-pair through Settings > Your glasses > General > Unpair glasses if necessary.

Open the phone’s Apps settings, choose Meta AI, tap Force stop, reopen Meta AI, and retry. If the error persists, use the restart and re-pairing sequence and protect any captures that have not been copied.
“The glasses stopped recording because storage is full.”
Do not search for a card to insert. Import the existing media, verify the copies, and clear the glasses through the supported app workflow. Adopt a more frequent import schedule if your use is video-heavy.
“I am considering a factory reset.”
Delay the reset if important photos or videos remain only on the glasses. Ask Ray-Ban support about recovery before taking an action that could affect access to unimported media.
When support or warranty service is the right answer
Support is appropriate when the glasses cannot maintain pairing, the Import button never returns after the documented recovery steps, or imports fail repeatedly despite correct Bluetooth and Wi-Fi conditions. Ray-Ban’s FAQ directs owners with persistent problems to open a warranty claim or contact support.
Recommended Free Tools
When contacting support, describe the exact symptom—missing Import, failed transfer, update-related error, or inability to record—and state whether unimported captures are still on the glasses. That information matters because a reset or replacement decision should account for media that has not been copied to the phone.
Bottom line on expandable storage
Ray-Ban Meta glasses are fixed-storage devices: 32GB of internal flash, with capture estimates that differ by generation, and no documented microSD or USB expansion method. Treat “not recognizing expandable storage” as an unsupported-accessory expectation unless the real symptom is an import or pairing failure. Turn on the glasses, pair them with Meta AI, enable phone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, restart both devices, re-pair through the app when needed, use Android’s Force stop for an update-related import error, and contact support before resetting if important captures remain.
