Some models can connect to the internet through Ethernet, and a mobile hotspot is another option. After setup, a Roku device can still display certain external sources, such as a cable box, game console or antenna, without being online. That offline use does not make Roku streaming apps available.
Does Roku need Wi-Fi or just an internet connection?
Wi-Fi is one way to connect a Roku to the internet, not the only way. Depending on the device, you may be able to use a wired Ethernet connection or a phone’s mobile hotspot instead. Roku’s setup guidance says streaming players and Roku TVs require an internet connection during setup; internet is also needed to stream shows and movies and receive software updates. Roku-branded TVs require internet to complete setup, according to Roku’s Roku TV overview.

If your goal is to watch internet-delivered services, the Roku must be online through a supported connection. If you only want to use an external source on a Roku TV after setup, such as a game console connected by HDMI or Live TV from an antenna, you can use that input without keeping the TV connected to the internet. Roku describes offline use as limited to HDMI, cable or over-the-air broadcasts in its internet connection guidance.

What can you do with a Roku when it is offline?
Offline viewing is limited to sources that reach the TV through a physical input. For example, a Roku TV can display a cable box, Blu-ray player or game console connected by HDMI, or antenna broadcasts through Live TV. Select the relevant input on the TV. The Roku’s streaming apps and internet services will not work without an internet connection.

Ways to connect a Roku to the internet
| Connection | Provides internet? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Yes | Connect to a wireless network during setup or in network settings. |
| Ethernet | Yes, on supported devices | Some Roku players have wired networking; certain models can use a compatible USB Ethernet adapter. Check the exact model and adapter specifications before buying. |
| Mobile hotspot | Yes, through cellular data | A phone hotspot can provide internet where home broadband is unavailable. Streaming and updates use the carrier’s data allowance. |
| HDMI, cable or antenna input | No | These are external viewing sources, not internet connections. They can support limited offline use after setup. |
Can you use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?
Possibly, but support depends on the Roku model. Roku’s Canada support article lists USB Ethernet adapter support for Roku Express model 3960, Roku Express 4K model 3940 and Roku Streambar model 9102. It specifies a 10/100 Mbps adapter, an AX8877X or SMSC95XX chipset, and a connector appropriate to the device’s USB or micro-USB port. The listed compatibility is model- and region-dependent; it should not be treated as universal support for Roku players.
Before purchasing an adapter, find the Roku’s model number at Settings > System > About and compare it with Roku’s wired-network adapter requirements. A compatible adapter gives the device a wired route to the internet; it does not remove the need for internet access for streaming or updates.

Can a phone hotspot get a Roku online?
Yes. Roku documents mobile hotspots as an internet connection option. This can be useful during travel or when home Wi-Fi is unavailable, but the Roku’s traffic uses the phone’s cellular connection. Check your carrier’s hotspot allowance and monitor usage: Roku does not publish a universal data-use figure for streaming in the cited guidance.

Does Roku let you skip internet during setup?
For the normal setup described in Roku’s guidance, internet is required. Roku also documents an unlinked mode for some Roku TVs, in which external inputs can be used without linking a Roku account; Roku streaming services and Streaming Store apps are unavailable in that mode. The option to connect to the internet later may not appear on every Roku TV system. Because this is model-dependent, check the guide for your specific TV rather than treating unlinked mode as a general setup workaround.

Do you need to buy a cable?
Usually not. Roku recommends using the HDMI cable included with the device. If it is missing or damaged, Roku says a High Speed HDMI cable is suitable for a TV limited to 720p or 1080p, while a Premium High Speed HDMI cable is appropriate for 4K Ultra HD or HDR. These cable types are for the video connection between the Roku and TV; they do not provide internet access. See Roku’s setup guidance for its cable recommendations.
