No. Queueing a presence update can defer or retry a status request, but it cannot guarantee that the request is accepted or propagated—or keep a dropped game connection alive. Presence display, multiplayer-session membership, and a usable connection to the game server are separate states. Reconnecting requires platform support and game-side recovery logic.
What does “online” mean?
A player may appear online to friends while no longer connected to a match, or may remain listed in a session after the game connection has dropped. Treat these as distinct signals:

| State | What it represents | What must recover |
|---|---|---|
| Presence | A platform’s social status, such as online, away, game activity, or joinability. The exact states vary by platform. Unreal Engine’s Presence Interface describes platform-specific presence and joinability. | The presence service must accept and propagate the status update. |
| Session membership | A player’s record in a multiplayer session. Xbox’s session system can mark a disconnected member Inactive rather than immediately removing them. Microsoft’s session visibility guidance explains this behavior. | The title may need to refresh session information, reserve a place, or rejoin the player. |
| Game transport | The live network path between the client and a host or server that carries gameplay traffic. | The client must reconnect to the host or server and resume or rejoin gameplay. |
These states can disagree temporarily. A successful enqueue says something about handling a write request; it does not establish that the player has a working transport or an active session.
What a queue can—and cannot—do
A queue can hold work the application has already created and attempt it later, depending on the queue’s persistence, retry, ordering, and deduplication design. It cannot, by itself, restore a network connection, ensure the client remains alive to process callbacks, make the service available, or prove that remote clients have seen the new status.

Even an accepted request may not mean processing is complete. In Microsoft’s Xbox status-code example, 202 Accepted means accepted but not completed; 429 indicates throttling, and 503 indicates service unavailability with a retry-later indication. Those are examples for the documented service, not universal meanings for every platform queue. Microsoft’s status-code reference lists these responses.
Reliable delivery is not the same as persistent presence or a continuous connection. Steam documents reliable delivery for its networking messages, while handling lobby membership separately. Apple GameKit likewise distinguishes ordered reliable game-data delivery from its reconnection policy for a disconnected player. Steamworks multiplayer documentation covers its networking and lobby features; Apple’s GameKit reconnection delegate lets the game decide whether a disconnected player should be invited back.

What platform reconnect support actually guarantees
Xbox GDK: service subscription recovery needs a title-side update
Microsoft documents that an ungraceful disconnect can cause Multiplayer Session Directory (MPSD) to mark a member Inactive. XSAPI attempts to reconnect to Real-Time Activity (RTA) and resubmit subscriptions. When it resubmits the multiplayer RTA subscription, the connection ID associated with the user’s MPSD session changes. The title receives a connection-ID-changed notification and must write the new ID to the session. This is specific recovery support, not a promise that the player never appears disconnected or inactive during recovery. Microsoft’s session visibility guidance describes the inactive-member behavior and waiting-player flow.

XblPresenceSetPresenceAsync is an asynchronous call. It takes an isUserActiveInTitle value and optional rich-presence identifiers, and returns an HRESULT; the documented example uses a completion callback and checks the result. A title should handle that result rather than treating the call as proof of a durable status change. Microsoft’s API reference documents the call.

Xbox presence can lag behind a disconnect
Microsoft says Presence can take up to 20 seconds to detect a disconnect. The member may remain in the session until the inactive timeout expires, which can make a full session appear occupied after someone has lost connection. Microsoft recommends setting the maximum session size above the title’s supported player count to mitigate temporarily stale occupancy. Its waiting-player flow keeps a full-session player outside the game session: the host creates a reservation when a slot opens, the title pulls reserved players for notification, and the waiting player reconnects and joins. That queue manages admission and notification; it does not mean the waiting player stayed online in the game session. Microsoft’s guidance gives the timing and flow.
Xbox service information is eventually consistent
Microsoft describes Xbox services as following “eventual consistency”: updates may take time to propagate, and observers can temporarily see stale information. Its guidance recommends showing last-known presence during a presence-service failure when presence is not mission-critical. A queued write may improve the chance that an attempt is made later, but it does not make presence immediately consistent or independent of service availability. Microsoft’s best practices for calling Xbox services explains the consistency model.

Other platforms keep presence and reconnection separate
Unreal Engine 5.8’s Online Services Presence Interface supports presence queries, updates, and change notifications, but the documentation labels the interface Beta. Its older Online Subsystem documentation notes that supported states vary by service and that privacy settings can affect visibility. Do not assume that one engine interface establishes universal presence or reconnect behavior. Unreal Engine’s Presence Interface documentation describes the current interface.
With Apple GameKit, the game’s match(_:shouldReinvitePlayer:) delegate returns whether GameKit should try to reconnect a disconnected player in a two-player match or terminate the match. The game therefore participates in the recovery decision. Apple’s delegate reference documents the choice.

How to design reconnect handling
Keep the responsibilities explicit instead of treating a queued status event as the recovery mechanism:
- Define the state your product displays. Decide whether “online” means presence, session membership, or an active gameplay connection, and whether presence is advisory or mission-critical.
- Handle the asynchronous write result. Record or surface failures, follow the service’s retry guidance, and avoid unbounded duplicate writes.
- Recover the transport. Detect connection loss and reconnect the client to the host or server; presence retries do not perform this step.
- Revalidate session access. Recheck authentication and membership, refresh connection identifiers or tokens where required, and rejoin or resume gameplay.
- Protect state from delayed updates. Make writes idempotent and order-aware so a delayed pre-disconnect update cannot overwrite a newer reconnect state.
- Represent uncertainty honestly. Where presence is eventually consistent, show a reconnecting or last-known state rather than implying that a displayed status proves gameplay connectivity.
These are general engineering practices drawn from the separation between presence, session, and transport; their exact implementation depends on the platform and the game’s queue and session design.
