Sometimes—but “pumpkin spice” alone does not mean a coffee contains pumpkin. Starbucks says its U.S. Pumpkin Spice Latte is made with real pumpkin, and its U.S. ingredient listing for the Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso names pumpkin puree in the sauce. For any other drink or packaged coffee, check the ingredient list for that exact product.
What “pumpkin spice” means on a coffee label
“Pumpkin spice” describes a flavor profile; it is not a promise that pumpkin is an ingredient. A product can use the name for its flavor without the name itself establishing what is in the recipe. Look for an ingredient such as pumpkin, pumpkin puree, or pumpkin juice in the specific product’s current ingredient statement.

Starbucks’ 2024 press release described its U.S. handcrafted Pumpkin Spice Latte as “Made with real pumpkin,” alongside espresso, steamed milk, and pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove flavors. Packaged pumpkin-spice coffee
Starbucks also lists packaged products called Pumpkin Spice Naturally Flavored Ground Coffee and Pumpkin Spice Flavored Coffee capsules for Nespresso Vertuo. Those names establish the products’ flavor and format, not that they contain pumpkin. Check the ingredient statement on the exact package: ground coffee and Vertuo capsules.
How to check a particular coffee
- Match the exact product. A handcrafted latte, an iced drink, and a bag or capsule of flavored coffee are different products; an ingredient claim for one does not establish the ingredients of another.
- Read the current ingredient statement. Look for pumpkin, pumpkin puree, or pumpkin juice. For a café drink, use the current listing for that named drink; for packaged coffee, read the package or the manufacturer’s current product information.
- Check the market and date. Ingredients and availability can differ by country and change over time, so a listing for another market or an older recipe may not describe the product you have.
- For dietary needs, check the full list. Do not rely on the seasonal flavor name or a single ingredient. Review all ingredients and the product’s allergen guidance for the exact item.
What the label can—and cannot—tell you
If pumpkin appears in the ingredient statement, that establishes it as an ingredient; if the manufacturer says “made with real pumpkin,” that is a presence claim. Neither wording tells you how much pumpkin the product contains unless an amount is separately stated. The examples above do not establish the ingredients of every brand, retailer, recipe, market, or year’s formulation.
