Does Pre-Encoding Prerecorded Videos Cut the Cost of a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Pre-encoding prerecorded videos may shift processing work, but it does not stop the continuous stream or determine the total bill. Compare the costs that recur in your workflow.

Sometimes—but not automatically. Encoding prerecorded videos before a broadcast can reduce the real-time processing your computer must do. It does not eliminate the need to play and send a continuous live signal to YouTube, or YouTube’s own processing of that signal. Whether it lowers your total cost depends on what you pay for playback, equipment and electricity, hosting, storage, channel time, and viewer delivery.

What pre-encoding does—and what it does not

Pre-encoding means preparing prerecorded source files before they are broadcast, rather than doing all source-video encoding during the broadcast. That can shift work away from the hours when your stream is live and may reduce processing demand on a local computer.

But an encoded file does not broadcast itself. A 24/7 live stream still needs a device or service to play the video and send an ongoing signal to YouTube. YouTube also processes incoming live video for viewers: its guidance says, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Pre-encoding your files does not remove that downstream work. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains its streaming requirements and transcoding.

Which costs might change?

The answer depends on what “encoding cost” means in your setup. Separate the one-time preparation of a video from the recurring cost of keeping the broadcast live and reaching viewers.

Cost or work What pre-encoding may change What to check
Local computer processing It may reduce the processing needed during the broadcast if the computer would otherwise encode source footage continuously. The computer may still need to run, play the files, encode or package the outgoing live signal, and upload it. No general electricity or hardware savings figure is established for a particular PC.
Cloud channel or stream time It may not change charges based on how long a channel is active. Check whether the provider bills for active channel time, configured outputs, or a subscription period. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, for example, charges according to active channel time and configured resolutions. Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing is specific to that service.
Storage and viewer delivery Pre-encoding alone does not establish a lower storage or delivery bill. Check stored-video capacity, delivered minutes, and bandwidth charges. Cloudflare Stream describes pricing based on stored and delivered video minutes, with ingress and encoding free and bandwidth included in delivered-video pricing. Cloudflare Stream pricing and product details are provider-specific; its pricing page was last updated September 8, 2026.
Resolution and bitrate Higher settings may use more resources or affect provider charges, whether preparation happens in advance or during the broadcast. Compare the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, stream duration, and audience assumptions. YouTube publishes recommended live encoder settings in its encoder guidance.
Reliability and operator time Pre-encoding does not, by itself, keep a computer online or recover a failed live signal. Include the effort and equipment needed to maintain a local setup, or the cost of a hosted option that handles continuous playback.

How to make a fair cost comparison

  1. Define the exact broadcast. Use the same number of live hours, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and expected concurrent audience for each approach.
  2. List every recurring charge. For a local workflow, include the computer or hardware you need and incremental electricity. For a hosted workflow, check storage, active channel time, output configuration, delivery, bandwidth, and subscription charges as applicable.
  3. Separate preparation from delivery. Count an advance encoding run as preparation work. Do not compare that one-time task with the entire cost of continuous playback and viewer delivery.
  4. Check the provider’s billing unit. A bill based on active channel hours may continue regardless of when the source file was encoded; a delivery-based bill depends on viewing and the provider’s pricing rules.
  5. Use estimates as estimates. Recheck the provider’s current pricing and assumptions for your region and configuration. A published example from one service is not a forecast for another service or for YouTube.

What published cloud examples can—and cannot—tell you

Cloud pricing examples show why encoding is only one possible component of a streaming bill. They do not measure the savings from pre-encoding for a 24/7 YouTube stream.

  • AWS example: AWS estimates approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers, including $2.50 for live encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. The example is for US East (N. Virginia), uses AWS’s stated assumptions, and AWS says its estimates are likely higher than actual costs and depend on the factors on its page. It is not a YouTube-specific estimate or a pre-encoding savings figure. See AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.
  • Cloudflare Stream: Its pricing page states $5 per 1,000 minutes of stored video capacity and $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered; ingress and encoding are free, and bandwidth is included in delivered-video pricing. The page was last updated September 8, 2026. This is Cloudflare’s pricing model, not a general rate for YouTube streaming. See Cloudflare Stream.

Neither figure tells you how much a particular creator saves by encoding files ahead of time. No general savings percentage for this exact 24/7 YouTube use case is established.

Local, hardware, or hosted playback?

Pre-encoding is one choice within a larger workflow decision: where playback and the outgoing stream run, and which costs recur while the stream is active.

  • Local computer: You control the setup and may reduce live-time processing by preparing files beforehand, but the computer and internet connection still need to support continuous playback and upload.
  • Dedicated hardware: YouTube’s encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. That establishes a scheduling option, not that buying the device saves money for your channel. Confirm current availability, price, and fit before considering it. See YouTube’s verified encoder list.
  • Hosted service: A cloud tool can handle playback without relying on a computer at home, but its billing model and included features matter. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre among cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; the listing is not an independent cost comparison. See YouTube’s verified encoder list.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is continuous playback rather than operating an encoder yourself, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
