On Android devices that follow the documented platform behavior, you do not need to re-enable OEM unlocking after every reboot: the Developer options permission is designed to persist. It is not the same as an unlocked bootloader, which requires a separate unlock action and can erase your data.
What OEM unlocking does—and what it does not do
The OEM unlocking switch in Developer options grants permission for a supported device to accept a later bootloader-unlock request. In AOSP, enabling it sets get_unlock_ability to 1. It does not itself unlock the bootloader.

AOSP says the permission persists across reboots and factory data resets: “After setting, this mode persists across reboots and factory data resets.” The unlocked bootloader state is separate and also persists across reboots. AOSP’s bootloader documentation was last updated June 17, 2026.

Why a script to toggle it on every reboot is not the answer
Under the documented Android behavior, the permission should already remain enabled. The official sources do not describe a universal script or setting to force it on at each startup, and a script would not resolve a device-specific restriction or firmware behavior.

If the switch appears to turn off or disappear, verify whether you are looking at the Developer options permission or the bootloader’s actual state. Then consult the official support instructions for your exact model, carrier, region, and firmware. AOSP guidance describes the platform contract, not a guarantee covering every manufacturer’s implementation.
If you intend to unlock the bootloader
Unlocking is a separate, consequential operation. AOSP describes fastboot flashing unlock as an unlock action and calls for a user warning and factory reset to protect data. Google also warns that unlocking reduces device security and erases user data. Back up anything important and confirm the official procedure and eligibility for your specific device before proceeding.

For Pixel and Nexus devices, Google’s factory-image instructions provide a device-family example: enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging, enter fastboot (for example, with adb reboot bootloader), then use the appropriate unlock command. These steps are not a universal recipe for Android devices.

Security and factory reset protection
Enabling OEM unlocking is not the same as unlocking the bootloader, but it can still matter for device security. Android Enterprise documentation states that factory reset protection is disabled when OEM unlocking is enabled in Developer options. Consider that trade-off before enabling the permission, especially on a device managed for work or containing sensitive data. See Android’s Security documentation.
