LibreOffice 26.8 has no built-in generative AI features. The Document Foundation (TDF), the nonprofit behind the suite, says it will consider adding AI to LibreOffice’s default configuration only if an integration meets the project’s requirements for privacy, user control, provider choice, Open Document Format (ODF) fidelity, and optional installation. That is a conditional position—not a promise that LibreOffice will never support AI, and not a ban on third-party extensions.
What does “no AI” mean for LibreOffice?
In its 26 August 2026 release announcement, TDF stated: “LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features.” The announcement also says no component of the suite requires network access to function. Those claims apply to LibreOffice 26.8 itself, not to every extension a user might install. Read TDF’s LibreOffice 26.8 announcement.

The policy statement followed on 3 September 2026, when Italo Vignoli published “Yes, no AI is now a feature” on the TDF Community Blog. Vignoli says the project does not reject AI outright; it will not put an AI feature in the default configuration unless the feature meets the project’s conditions and can be supported throughout a release lifecycle. Read the TDF Community Blog post.
Vignoli describes the position as “an assessment of the current state of the technology and the solutions based on it, and not a judgement on the value of the sector.” In practical terms, the Foundation’s assessment is about default inclusion and support—not whether AI has value in general or whether users may choose to use it.

What conditions does TDF require for default AI?
TDF lists requirements that address how an AI feature runs, handles document contents, and fits into LibreOffice. The Foundation says it currently knows of no integration that meets all of them for default deployment and lifecycle support. That is TDF’s assessment, not an independent audit of every available product.
- User-controlled execution: Users must be able to choose whether inference runs on their own computer, on infrastructure they control, or through a service they select independently.
- Authorization before transmission: Document content must not leave the computer without the user’s authorization.
- No telemetry: The AI feature must not introduce usage-data collection.
- Provider choice: The design must not depend on a single provider; interfaces should allow multiple backends.
- ODF fidelity: Generated content should use Open Document Format and preserve document structure, styles, and semantics.
- Optional installation and removal: Users and administrators who do not authorize the feature must be able to leave it out and keep it out of the interface.
Taken together, these conditions make the question broader than whether an AI button can be added. TDF’s stated bar also covers user consent, data handling, interoperability, document integrity, and ongoing support.
Can you use AI with LibreOffice now?
Yes, if you choose to install a compatible third-party extension. TDF says extensions are available, including some that connect to locally running models through Ollama, LM Studio, or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint. An extension is separate software maintained by its author; it does not automatically inherit LibreOffice’s properties or TDF’s requirements.

The 26.8 release and TDF’s September policy post establish the current position as of 7 October 2026: no generative AI is built into LibreOffice 26.8, while default integration remains conditional on meeting the project’s requirements. Neither statement rules out a future integration if those conditions are met. Users who want AI today can investigate optional extensions, while users who prefer a suite without built-in generative AI can use 26.8 without enabling one.
