Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose an AI model only after you have defined the work, the information it will handle, who may be affected, and what could go wrong. Then compare candidates in the configuration you would actually deploy, using realistic tests and explicit privacy, security, oversight, and reliability requirements. A benchmark score, vendor label, or risk framework cannot by itself establish that a model is safe or private for your use.
Define the use case and its consequences first
Begin with the decision the AI system would support—not with a list of popular models. Describe the task, intended users, affected people, input and output data, operating environment, and how outputs may influence decisions. Include likely benefits as well as foreseeable harms.

Map the information and people involved
Identify sensitive or protected information, including personally identifiable information, and consider whether the system’s outputs could have direct or indirect effects on people. These conditions can justify giving the use case higher initial priority for risk management. Also consider what information the system might infer from inputs, rather than reviewing only the data that users knowingly submit.
Ask whether AI is appropriate
Weigh the expected benefit against the costs and potential harms, and consider whether a non-AI process would meet the need with less risk. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) describes context mapping as a basis for an initial go/no-go decision about designing, developing, or deploying an AI system.

Set non-negotiable requirements before comparing models
Translate the use case into minimum conditions. Treat a condition as a gate—not a score to be offset by stronger performance elsewhere—if failing it would make the system unacceptable.
- Privacy and confidentiality: Specify what data may be used, who may access it, and what safeguards and data-minimization practices are required. Review privacy risks from both the data supplied and information the system could infer.
- Security and resilience: Define the confidentiality, integrity, and availability protections expected for the system and its data, including relevant software and hardware components. Decide how the organization should respond to failures or incidents.
- Acceptable failure behavior: Identify unsupported or unsafe outputs that could cause harm, how serious those harms could be, and what the system should do when it is uncertain, fails, or is used outside its intended scope.
- Human oversight: Decide who reviews outputs, what they need to know about the system’s limitations, and how they can intervene or escalate a concern.
- Operational and governance needs: Set expectations for documentation, risk ownership, monitoring, third-party components, and change management.
Set risk tolerance and identify applicable legal, policy, and contractual requirements for the relevant jurisdiction and sector. General NIST guidance does not settle those jurisdiction-specific questions.

Compare candidates against the real workflow
Use the same decision criteria for each shortlisted candidate, but weight them according to the use case. Trustworthiness attributes can trade off; the right balance depends on the context, and no universal ranking follows from these criteria.

| Area | What to examine | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy and data handling | Data minimization, confidentiality and access controls, deployment boundaries, and possible privacy inferences. | Current provider documentation and contractual terms, plus an assessment of residual privacy risk for the intended configuration. |
| Safety and consequences | Foreseeable harms, their likelihood and severity, unsafe or unsupported outputs, escalation paths, and whether remaining risks fit the organization’s tolerance. | Tests of consequential failure cases and a documented plan for human review and response. |
| Task performance and reliability | Performance on realistic examples, relevant false positives and false negatives, and robustness under expected operating conditions. | A representative test set, clear methodology, and results broken down by the errors that matter for the task—not only an aggregate score. |
| Human oversight and limits | Whether operators can understand limitations, review outputs, intervene, and recognize use beyond the system’s intended scope. | Model and system documentation, operator procedures, and observed behavior in the planned workflow. |
| Security and resilience | Protection of data and system availability and integrity, including risks from underlying software and hardware. | Security documentation, configuration review, and defined failure and incident responses. |
| Documentation and governance | Risk ownership, third-party components, evaluation records, monitoring responsibilities, and change management. | Named owners, accessible records, and a process for reviewing changes and incidents. |
| Deployment fit | Operational constraints and the exact configuration in which the candidate would run. | Evaluation evidence from that configuration; results from other conditions may not apply. |
Test the shortlist with representative evidence
Build a test set that reflects the expected task and operating conditions. Define the test method before comparing results, and examine the types of errors that matter in context. Accuracy measurements are more useful when paired with realistic, representative test data and documented methodology; a single aggregate score can conceal consequential failures.

- Choose realistic cases: Include normal use, difficult but plausible inputs, and cases where an unsupported or unsafe answer would matter. Use data that is appropriate for the test and handle it under the privacy and security requirements you set.
- Define what counts as failure: Specify relevant wrong answers, missed detections, false alarms, unsafe outputs, and failures to recognize uncertainty or limits. Focus on the error types and operating conditions that could affect people or expose information.
- Evaluate each candidate consistently: Record the configuration, test conditions, methodology, and results. Compare results against the requirements and risk tolerance for this use—not against a general-purpose leaderboard.
- Review how people will use the output: Evaluate the complete workflow, including review, intervention, escalation, and downstream use. A model result alone does not show how the system will affect a real decision.
Test before deployment and repeat evaluations regularly during operation. Re-test after a material change to the model, configuration, workflow, or other relevant component: evidence applies to the conditions that were tested, not automatically to a changed system.

Before making a decision, document the evidence, the tradeoffs, residual risks, who owns them, and what monitoring will look for. Set conditions that trigger reassessment or suspension, such as a material change, an incident, or evidence that the system is being used outside its intended scope.
Use NIST guidance as a process aid, not a product endorsement
NIST’s AI RMF organizes risk-management work through four functions: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. The framework is voluntary; it is not a certification of a model, a product ranking, or proof that a system is safe for a particular deployment. NIST says AI RMF 1.0 is being revised, a status checked on October 7, 2026, so readers should verify the current status when applying it.
NIST released AI RMF 1.0 on January 26, 2023, and its Generative AI Profile on July 26, 2024. On April 7, 2026, NIST released a concept note for a Trustworthy AI in Critical Infrastructure profile. These are release dates, not evidence that a particular model meets a performance or safety threshold. For safety-critical work, the general framework does not establish the requirements of an unnamed sector or jurisdiction; domain-specific standards, validation, legal review, and qualified human oversight may also be needed.
For a concrete shortlist, check each provider’s current primary documentation and contract for retention, use of data for training, data location, security commitments, and the model version and configuration covered. Those details are provider- and arrangement-specific, so they should not be inferred from a model name or general policy statement.
