No: JSON-LD does not decide whether Google cites your site in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google recommends JSON-LD as a structured-data format, but says those AI features have no special technical requirements or optimizations. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be considered as a supporting link.
Structured data can help Google understand a page and may make it eligible for certain search features. Eligibility is not a promise of display, and Google’s guidance does not establish how independent answer engines use JSON-LD.

What JSON-LD can—and cannot—do for AI search
JSON-LD is one way to add structured data: machine-readable information that describes a page and its content. Google also supports Microdata and RDFa. It generally recommends JSON-LD because it is easier to implement and maintain, but it does not require JSON-LD for AI citations or say that choosing it earns a citation. Google’s structured-data introduction says all three formats are acceptable when valid and correctly implemented for the relevant feature.

For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, the decisive published guidance is that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page still needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. Google points site owners to foundational Search practices and helpful, reliable, people-first content—not a special JSON-LD citation recipe. Google’s AI-features guide describes these requirements.

Eligibility is not a guarantee of visibility
Structured data may enable eligibility for certain search features, but Google’s policy is explicit: “Using structured data enables a feature to be present, it does not guarantee that it will be present.” Google may choose a different presentation, or show a text result instead. Invalid markup, inaccurate descriptions, or violations of feature policies can also prevent a page from qualifying. Google’s general structured-data guidelines explain the limits.
That distinction matters when evaluating a claim that schema “gets you cited.” A page can have valid JSON-LD and still not appear as a rich result or as an AI supporting link. Conversely, Google does not say JSON-LD is a prerequisite for AI-feature eligibility.

When structured data may be useful
Article details in Search
Article structured data can help Google understand a news, blog, or sports article and may support how its title, images, or dates appear in Search. Google also says Article markup is not required for eligibility in Top stories. These are possible search-presentation benefits, not evidence that the markup causes an AI citation. See Google’s Article structured-data documentation.
Dataset discovery
For datasets, descriptive structured metadata can make material easier to find in Google Dataset Search. That is a specific discovery use case; it does not establish that all answer engines prefer JSON-LD. Google’s dataset documentation describes the relevant metadata.
Rank #3
Keep markup accurate and visible
Structured data should describe content people can actually see on the page. Do not mark up hidden, irrelevant, or misleading content, or use markup to imply information the page does not contain. Required properties and feature-specific policies still apply. Google’s structured-data policies cover accuracy and prohibited practices.
Technical correctness is only part of the work. A validation tool can detect certain markup problems, but it cannot make an unhelpful page valuable or guarantee selection by Search systems. Google’s guidance for generative-AI-created content likewise emphasizes accuracy, quality, and relevance, and warns against producing many low-value pages as scaled content abuse. See Google’s guidance on generative AI content.
Validate and monitor structured data
- Choose the relevant feature. Add the properties required for that specific feature and follow both general and feature-specific policies.
- Run the Rich Results Test. Use Google’s Rich Results Test to check eligible markup and identify detected errors.
- Deploy, then inspect the URL. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to check Google’s rendered view and confirm whether the structured data was found. Make sure the page can be crawled and is not blocked by robots.txt, a noindex directive, or a login requirement.
- Allow time for recrawling. Google says discovering and recrawling a newly published page can take several days; a successful test does not mean Google has already processed the live page.
These steps follow Google’s structured-data introduction. If you want to assess whether markup helps your site’s Search performance, Google recommends selecting stable pages with existing Search Console data, confirming that the markup was found with URL Inspection, and comparing performance over a period of months. Treat that as a site-level assessment; it cannot prove that JSON-LD caused an AI citation.
Use the right markup for the page
Adding a schema type simply because it sounds relevant can backfire if the page does not meet its definition. For example, Google’s QAPage markup is for a page focused on one question and its answers where users can submit answers. It is not intended for ordinary FAQs, product pages with multiple questions, or a how-to or blog post that answers a question without user-submitted alternatives. See Google’s QAPage guidance.
What this means for other answer engines
Google’s documentation supports conclusions about Google Search and its AI features. It does not establish how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing/Copilot, or other independent answer engines process JSON-LD or choose citations. Avoid treating Google’s format recommendations as proof of a universal answer-engine ranking or citation rule.
