What the “15 years of muscle memory” claim means
A Reddit discussion titled “iOS 27 breaks 15 years of muscle memory on iPhone and iPad” describes users having difficulty opening Notification Center after updating. Replies are individual experiences, not controlled testing or an Apple announcement. The “15 years” wording is rhetorical; no independent statistic establishes how many people are affected.

The reported condition appears to involve Siri AI being enabled. That matters because Apple Intelligence availability varies by hardware, language and region. Someone can install iOS 27 on a supported older iPhone without having the AI features that allegedly coincide with the behavior.
What Apple has actually documented
Apple announced iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 availability on September 14, 2026. Apple’s September 29 iPadOS 27 update notes describe Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features, Liquid Glass readability refinements, performance improvements, better search and support for resizing iPhone apps on iPad. They do not mention a changed Notification Center gesture.

Apple describes the iPadOS release as an experience refined across “design, performance, connectivity, search, and more.” That is Apple’s characterization, not an independent usability study, and it does not establish that Notification Center navigation was altered.

How to open Notification Center after updating
Start with the same edge-swipe you used before the update: swipe down from the top edge of the screen. On Face ID iPhones, the upper-right area is reserved for Control Center, so begin nearer the top-left or top-center portion of the display. On iPad, start at the top edge and drag downward. If an app intercepts the gesture, begin precisely at the bezel and use a deliberate, longer swipe.

If the result is different from your previous experience, note exactly what appears—Notification Center, Control Center, an app menu or nothing—before changing settings. That observation helps distinguish a gesture-location mistake from a software interaction.

Could Siri AI be responsible?
The discussion links the complaint to Siri AI, but the available material does not prove causation. Apple Intelligence features are restricted by eligible hardware, supported languages and region. Apple initially said Siri AI was unavailable on iOS and iPadOS in the European Union, while Apple Intelligence features were unavailable in China pending regulatory requirements. Rollouts can change, so check Apple’s current availability information for your location.

A practical isolation test
- Record the device model, iOS or iPadOS version and full build number shown in Settings > General > About.
- Record your region and device language.
- Check whether Apple Intelligence or Siri AI is enabled in Settings; the label can vary by release.
- Test the top-edge swipe on the Home Screen and inside at least one app.
- If the feature is available, repeat with Siri AI temporarily disabled, then compare the result.
- Write down whether the behavior returns after a restart and whether another user can reproduce it on the same device.
This does not prove a cause by itself, but it produces the details needed for a reproducible bug report instead of a general impression that the gesture changed.
What is confirmed on iPadOS 27—and what is not
- Confirmed: Apple documents readability controls for the Liquid Glass design, performance and search improvements, Siri AI features and resizable iPhone apps on iPad.
- Not confirmed: an intentional removal or redesign of the Notification Center swipe.
- Not established: how many users are affected, which exact builds trigger the issue, or whether the behavior is limited to a particular iPad model, language or region.
A separate Tom’s Guide how-to reports a paste suggestion above the keyboard as an iOS 27 convenience feature. That is unrelated evidence and does not corroborate the Notification Center allegation.

If Notification Center still will not open
- Try the gesture from the Home Screen, where app-specific touch handling is less likely to interfere.
- Move your starting point away from the upper-right corner on Face ID iPhone models to avoid opening Control Center.
- Restart the device and retest before changing multiple settings.
- Install the latest available iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 point release; Apple’s behavior and regional feature availability can change between builds.
- Capture a screen recording or describe the exact response, then include the model, build, AI setting, region and language in feedback to Apple.
Do not buy replacement hardware or accessories to address this report. Nothing in the cited evidence shows that a new iPhone, iPad, Apple Pencil or repair tool is required.

iOS 27 may feel different to some users, particularly where Siri AI is available and enabled, but Apple has not documented a universal Notification Center gesture change. The reliable answer is to test the swipe on your exact device and build, isolate the Siri AI setting, and report reproducible results with complete configuration details.
