Daily hibernation adds writes to an SSD, but it does not prove that hibernation caused a particular drive to fail. Windows saves a compressed copy of system memory to the primary drive when it hibernates, so the amount written depends on the memory state and compression—not simply on how much RAM is installed. To assess a drive, compare its health data with the manufacturer’s endurance rating.
What Windows writes when it hibernates
Microsoft says that during a hibernate transition, Windows writes the contents of memory to the hibernation file on the primary system drive. Windows compresses that state using all processor cores before writing it. The size of the write therefore varies with the memory footprint, compression, hibernation-file type and what Windows needs to preserve; it is not necessarily equal to installed RAM on every transition.
Microsoft documents default hibernation-file sizes of 40% of physical memory for a full file and 20% for a reduced file used for Fast Startup. Those are file-size defaults, not a promise that every transition writes exactly that amount. See Microsoft’s System power states documentation.
Can daily hibernation wear out an SSD?
It can contribute to the drive’s total write workload. SSD endurance is finite and is commonly specified as TBW (terabytes written) or DWPD (drive writes per day). These are workload-dependent measures, and the drive’s controller can write more data to NAND internally than the host sends because of write amplification. SanDisk explains TBW and SSD write endurance in its SSD endurance guidance; SNIA describes TBW and DWPD as workload-dependent endurance metrics in its endurance definition.

There is no universal conversion from “hibernate once a day for five years” to a failure date. The result depends on how much data each transition writes, the SSD’s rated endurance, other workloads and the drive’s health. Hibernation is a plausible contributor to wear, not proof that it caused one specific failure.
How to check your SSD’s health and writes
- Identify the drive and its protocol. Check whether it is NVMe or SATA, then use the SSD maker’s utility or a reputable health reader that correctly supports that protocol. SMART attribute names and presentation can differ between devices.
- Read the health data. For NVMe, Microsoft’s health-log documentation defines
DataUnitWrittenand an estimated endurance field. Microsoft says a value of 100 means the estimated endurance has been consumed, but that value alone may not indicate an NVM-subsystem failure. See Microsoft’s NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG reference. - Compare with the maker’s rating. Check the drive model’s TBW specification and warranty terms. SanDisk recommends its dashboard for remaining-life information and notes that SMART data can expose wear and endurance information in its drive-health support guidance.
- Back up before deciding on replacement. If the health utility reports critical warnings or the drive is producing errors, protect important data and follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance. A depleted endurance estimate is useful context, not by itself a diagnosis of imminent failure.
Sleep, hibernation, Fast Startup or shutdown?
These choices trade power use, resume behavior and session continuity against writes to the system drive. Availability and behavior also depend on the PC and its supported power states.

| Mode | System-drive writes | Power while off | Resume and session |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Does not save the session to the hibernation file as hibernation does | Uses power to maintain the sleeping state | Fast resume; session remains in memory |
| Hibernation | Writes compressed memory state to the primary drive | Preserves the session without maintaining it in memory | Resumes the saved session |
| Fast Startup | Uses a reduced hibernation file; its documented default size is 20% of physical memory | Applies to shutdown/startup behavior rather than preserving an open user session as full hibernation does | Can speed startup; not a substitute for saving an open session |
| Full shutdown | Avoids the hibernation-file write associated with hibernation | No power for the off session | Starts a new session rather than restoring the previous one |
If preserving battery while away and returning to the same session matters, hibernation may be worth its write cost. If the PC does not need that behavior, sleep or full shutdown avoids the hibernation transition write; Fast Startup is separate and still uses a reduced hibernation file. Disabling hibernation removes that file and prevents future hibernation writes, but changes resume behavior. It cannot repair wear that has already occurred.
