It carries digital audio, including uncompressed audio and, where supported, lossless compressed formats. What you hear depends on the format your devices send and pass through, any conversion or downmixing in the signal path, and whether the connection uses ARC or eARC. A more expensive HDMI cable is not an evidence-backed sound upgrade when your existing connection works reliably.
Why HDMI itself does not make audio worse
HDMI transports digital audio rather than directly altering it into a lower-quality sound. HDMI Licensing’s 2006 announcement describes support for high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and compressed formats including Dolby Digital and DTS. It also says HDMI 1.3 added support for lossless compressed Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. HDMI Licensing’s HDMI 1.3 announcement establishes format capability; it does not mean every device or connection supports every format.

For audio to reach your speakers as intended, the source, TV, receiver or soundbar, app, and settings must all work together. A device may convert a format, reduce the channel count, or apply processing. Those are possible reasons two connections can sound different; HDMI alone does not identify which one is happening in a particular system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere audio quality can change in an HDMI setup
- Format support: Check that each device in the signal path supports the codec and channel configuration you want. A format supported by HDMI as a specification is not automatically supported by every TV, console, streaming device, app, AVR, or soundbar.
- Signal path: Audio can go from a source directly to an AVR or soundbar, or from the source to the TV and then back to the audio device. The TV may handle the incoming format differently from a direct connection.
- Device settings: Output modes such as bitstream or pass-through may preserve a format, while conversion, downmixing, or other processing can change what is sent. The exact controls vary by model, so consult the manuals for the devices in your setup.
- Playback and speakers: Different apps, source material, speaker or headphone systems, and listening modes can affect perceived sound. A difference does not, by itself, prove that HDMI reduced fidelity.
- Connection reliability: A damaged or unreliable cable can cause connection problems. That is a reason to troubleshoot or replace it, not evidence that a premium cable will improve the sound of a stable connection.
ARC and eARC: what they mean for TV audio
ARC and eARC are HDMI audio-return features. They matter when a TV sends audio back to an AVR or soundbar over HDMI, rather than when a source connects directly to the audio device.

| Feature | What the official HDMI material says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ARC | HDMI’s 1.4b overview describes ARC as a way for an HDMI-connected TV to send audio upstream to an AVR or soundbar. HDMI Specification 1.4b | Confirm that the TV and receiving device both support ARC and that the connection uses their ARC-designated HDMI ports. |
| eARC | HDMI Licensing describes eARC as an advancement over ARC, with support for high-bitrate formats, up to 192 kHz/24-bit, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and 32-channel uncompressed audio. Its listed formats include DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos. These are stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every eARC device supports every mode. HDMI’s eARC overview | Check eARC support and the desired format on both the TV and the AVR or soundbar. Also verify the source, app, and TV settings: eARC capability alone does not establish that a specific system passes a format unchanged. |
If TV-to-speaker audio is limited or differs from a direct source-to-receiver connection, compare the supported formats and settings for every device in the route. ARC versus eARC is one compatibility factor—not a verdict that HDMI generally lowers sound quality.
Can a better HDMI cable make audio sound better?
There is no basis in the official HDMI materials cited here for promising an audible fidelity improvement from a premium cable when the existing cable works correctly. The materials document interface and format capabilities, not controlled listening comparisons between cable grades.

Choose or replace a cable to establish the connection, address a damaged or unreliable cable, or meet a documented requirement of your equipment and intended configuration. For ARC or eARC, check both connected devices’ manuals and use the designated HDMI ports. If audio is already stable and the intended format is reaching the audio device, buying a more expensive cable solely to improve sound is not supported by the evidence cited here.
A practical way to find the cause of worse-sounding HDMI audio
- Map the route. Write down whether the source connects directly to an AVR or soundbar, or connects to the TV with audio returning over ARC or eARC.
- Check each device’s supported formats. Use the manuals or supported-format tables for the source, TV, AVR or soundbar, and relevant app. Do not infer a model’s support from HDMI’s general capabilities.
- Review output and pass-through settings. Look for settings that control bitstream, pass-through, PCM, channel count, downmixing, or audio processing. Labels and behavior differ by model; follow that model’s documentation.
- Compare like with like. Use the same content and playback conditions when comparing routes or settings. Different source mixes, apps, or speaker modes can make a comparison misleading.
- Test connection stability. If audio drops out or fails at the required configuration, check the ports and cable, then try a known-good compatible cable. Replace a cable to solve a connectivity fault, not on the assumption that a working one is suppressing audio quality.
HDMI Forum’s January 2017 announcement described eARC as part of the HDMI 2.1 specification, but a specification announcement is not an independent listening test. HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.1 announcement is useful for the feature’s context, not proof of a sound-quality improvement.
