HDMI 1.4 alone does not decide whether FreeSync works. AMD states that FreeSync has supported HDMI since its inception, and a FreeSync-certified display that supports FreeSync over HDMI can deliver variable refresh rate without HDMI 2.1. Whether it works on your setup depends on the specific monitor or TV, its HDMI input, the graphics device or console, and how the feature is configured. The HDMI version printed on a port or cable is the wrong thing to check first.
Why the HDMI version on the label does not settle it
HDMI is the transport between your source and your display. FreeSync is a capability that depends on both ends of that connection. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing the display’s refresh rate with the frame rate from the graphics device, which reduces visual artifacts such as tearing and stuttering. The same AMD technology page says HDMI 2.1 is not required when the certified display supports FreeSync over HDMI.

That is the reason a “HDMI 1.4” label can be misleading in either direction. A monitor with an HDMI 1.4 port may support FreeSync on that port if its maker and AMD certify it that way. A display with a newer-looking port may still not expose FreeSync on the HDMI input. Neither conclusion follows from the port version alone.

What has to be true at both ends
AMD lists the following requirements on its AMD FreeSync Technology page:
#1 Best Overall
- Reliable Performance: Supports Full HD 1920x1080 resolution with refresh rates of 144Hz, 100Hz, and 60Hz for smooth and vibrant visuals.
- Ethernet-Enabled: Built-in Ethernet support allows for device connectivity and network sharing through a single cable.
- Advanced Features: Includes HDCP compatibility to enable secure content playback without interruptions.
- Durable Build: HDMI Male to HDMI Male design with genuine components ensures consistent and high-quality performance across Sceptre monitors, TVs, gaming consoles, PCs, and laptops.
- Convenient Length: The 5ft (1.5m) cable length provides an optimal balance of flexibility and ease of setup for various use cases.
- The display: a FreeSync-capable monitor, TV, or laptop panel, and specifically one that supports FreeSync over HDMI if you plan to use the HDMI input.
- The source: a compatible AMD APU or GPU. For a console or other device, confirm that its manufacturer supports VRR with that exact display and connection.
- The driver: a current graphics driver, installed through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- The setting: FreeSync enabled in the display’s on-screen menu and, where applicable, in the graphics software.
If any one of these is missing, you will not get variable refresh rate over HDMI, regardless of the cable.
Check the HDMI refresh range, not just the feature
FreeSync over HDMI does not mean the same refresh range on every monitor. AMD’s AMD FreeSync Monitors directory lists the interface and refresh-rate range for each certified model. The examples below are the ranges AMD lists for these three displays, not general HDMI 1.4 limits.

| Monitor (per AMD directory) | FreeSync range via HDMI |
|---|---|
| Acer CB281HK | 40–60 Hz |
| Philips 271E9 | 48–75 Hz |
| MSI MPG 322URX | 48–240 Hz |
The practical consequence is that a narrow range means variable refresh only works between those frame rates. Outside the range, frames are not synchronized. If your game regularly runs above or below the listed window, the benefit you expect will be smaller than the headline suggests. Bandwidth also matters: an older HDMI connection can cap the resolution and refresh combination you can run, so confirm the listed range applies to the resolution and refresh rate you actually use.

- Find the exact model number, not just the product line.
- Confirm the model is FreeSync certified in AMD’s directory and that the listing says FreeSync works over HDMI.
- Note the HDMI-specific minimum and maximum refresh rates, and check them against your games and target resolution.
- Check that your GPU, APU, or console supports VRR with that display on that input.
- Look at the manufacturer’s manual or specification sheet for the input you plan to use. AMD’s directory is the first check; the manual confirms the details for your region and firmware.
A cable does not add FreeSync to a display that lacks it over HDMI. If the monitor’s HDMI input is not listed for FreeSync, the solution is a different display or a DisplayPort connection where the source and display support it, not a replacement cable.

If FreeSync is missing after setup
AMD’s guide, How to Enable AMD FreeSync with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, was last updated March 3, 2025 and is the reference for the steps below. Follow the current version of that page and your display manual, because menu names change with firmware and software releases.
- Confirm the display is set to the HDMI input you are using and that the source is connected to that input.
- Enable FreeSync in the display’s on-screen menu. Turn off any picture preset or custom mode that AMD’s guide notes can disable it on some panels, then re-enable FreeSync.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and check the FreeSync status for the display. Update the driver if the software is out of date.
- Restart the game or console session after changing settings, then confirm the status again.
- If FreeSync still does not appear, test the same display on a DisplayPort connection where available. If it works there and not on HDMI, the HDMI input is not certified for FreeSync on that model, and the range listed for that input is the limit you have.
What the figures do and do not show
AMD’s technology page also says it had certified about 4,000 FreeSync-enabled displays as of November 2023, as a footnote on that page. That count is historical and does not describe the current catalogue. Use the AMD directory for the current list of models and their HDMI ranges.

Bottom line for HDMI 1.4 users
HDMI 1.4 is not a reliable test of FreeSync support. The question to answer is whether your specific display lists FreeSync over HDMI, what refresh range it supports on that input, and whether your graphics device or console supports VRR with it. Verify those three things before you buy, and use the setup steps above if the feature does not appear.
