In the original Among Us, a kick removes a player from the current lobby, and under Innersloth’s 2018 rules that player could rejoin once the lobby was open again. A ban blocks that player from the specific game they were banned from, and that block held even if the host who issued it left. Those rules come from dated developer posts, not from a current-build guarantee, so the details below separate what Innersloth documented from what remains unconfirmed today.
What a kick does
Innersloth’s official update post of September 29, 2018 stated: “Kicked players can rejoin before the game starts or after each round when everyone is in the lobby.” A kick, in other words, was a temporary removal. It cleared the player out of that moment in the lobby without barring them from the room permanently.

The practical consequence is that a kick is useful for stopping disruption during a round or a session, but it does not keep someone out. If the host wants the player gone for longer, the kick alone was not designed to do that.

What a ban does
The same 2018 post stated: “Banned players will not be able to join the game they were banned from.” The restriction was scoped to that game. Two details in the post matter for readers:
#1 Best Overall
- Crewmate Edition Includes: See description below for complete details
- Life as a Crewmate: Complete all your tasks on the ship to win but watch out for Impostors. Report dead bodies and call emergency meetings to vote the Impostors out. Hope you chose correctly
- Play as an Impostor: Cause chaos, sneak around, and frame innocent bystanders. Winning involves killing off every Crewmate - think you’re a master of sabotage
- Customization: Choose how you want to play. Add more impostors, tasks, decrease visibility and more. All in style as you get to choose your favorite color, outfit, and hat
- Cross-platform: Play with your friends between PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android, and iOS
- The host leaving did not lift it. A banned player could not join that game even if the banning host had left it.
- A new game by the same host reset it. The restriction did not apply if the banning host created a new game. Being banned from one lobby therefore did not mean the player was blocked from every future lobby.
Because of that second point, a ban should be understood as exclusion from one game, not a lasting account-level or community-wide block. Nothing in the 2018 post describes a ban following a player into lobbies run by other hosts.
Host controls and the in-game vote: two different 2019 changes
Innersloth’s April 24, 2019 update said: “Hosts will still be able to kick and ban in the lobby ship, but once the game starts, they will not be allowed.” So host kick and ban controls existed in the lobby, but not once a round had begun.

- IMMERSIVE DEDUCTION EXPERIENCE – Step into a tense village mystery where players take on hidden roles and work together to uncover the Werewolves through logic, discussion, and quick decisions
- QUICK 10-MINUTE ROUNDS – Fast gameplay makes it ideal for classrooms, family gatherings, and mixed-experience game groups; easy setup and simultaneous play allow for multiple back-to-back sessions
- SECRET ROLES & STRATEGY – Each player receives a unique identity like Seer, Troublemaker, or Werewolf, encouraging bluffing, analysis, and strategic interaction that keeps every game engaging
- EASY TO LEARN, EXCITING TO MASTER – Simple rules and real-time play make the game accessible for newcomers, while varied role combinations create depth and replay value for experienced players
- EXPANDABLE & HIGHLY REPLAYABLE – No two sessions are the same, and expansions such as Daybreak, Vampire, or Alien introduce new characters and twists to build a deeper social deduction experience
The May 7, 2019 update added a different route for removing players during a game. It stated: “If any three players vote to kick a player, it will happen.” This was a group vote open to living players, not a host power. Three votes were required.

Kick and ban compared
| Question | Kick | Ban |
|---|---|---|
| Outcome | Temporary removal from the lobby (2018 post) | Blocked from the specific game (2018 post) |
| Can the player rejoin? | Yes, before the game starts or after a round when everyone is in the lobby (2018 post) | No, for the banned game (2018 post) |
| After the host leaves | Not addressed in the 2018 post | Ban remains in place for that game (2018 post) |
| Effect on a new game by the same host | Not addressed in the 2018 post | Restriction does not apply (2018 post) |
| Who can use it, and when | Host, in the lobby; in-game group vote of three living players added May 2019 | Host, in the lobby (April 2019 post says hosts cannot act once the game starts) |
The table reflects dated developer statements. Whether these rules still match the current build is covered in the next section.
What is confirmed today, and what is not
Innersloth’s current FAQ confirms one concrete flow: reporting a player through the Kick menu. The FAQ says to open chat, choose the Kick menu, select the player, then choose Report. That path documents reporting misbehavior; it does not spell out the current rules for kick rejoin, ban persistence, or every host control in a private lobby.

The kids’ toys are authentic-looking and in line with the game’s original style. Minimalistic as they are, these Among Us party favors show the producer’s great attention to detail, like the 5 accessories included in the deluxe box. Spark your children’s interest in the game, or reward them if they’re already fans.
- PERFECT AS AMONG US GIFTS. A whole pack of Among Us merch is a great gift idea, especially if your or your friends’ children have tried out and liked the game. The pack will also come in handy if you’re looking for simple Among Us birthday party supplies, and it can even be used as Among Us birthday decorations. Get the right pack to help a young enthusiast complete their collection or start one from scratch. Perhaps, an adult AmongUs small toys collector will appreciate the gift, too.
- Open chat in the lobby.
- Choose the Kick menu.
- Select the player.
- Choose Report.
For that reason, the rejoin and ban behavior described above should be read as the rules Innersloth stated in 2018 and 2019. Later updates may have changed them, and no retrieved official source from this period confirms that they still apply unchanged. If your lobby behaves differently from the table, the difference is more likely to reflect a later update than a mistake in these dates.
Original Among Us is not Among Us 3D
Innersloth also publishes Among Us 3D, a separate game. Its 2025 moderation article describes its own voice-moderation settings and group voting behavior. Those mechanics belong to that game and should not be applied to the original. If you are playing the original, the 2018 and 2019 posts above are the relevant source; the 3D article does not describe how kicks or bans work there.
Quick Recap
Choosing between a kick and a ban
- Use a kick when a player is disrupting the current session and you are willing to let them return once the lobby reopens or a round ends.
- Use a ban when you want the player kept out of that particular game, including after you leave, knowing it does not extend to a new game you create with the same host.
- Report through the Kick menu when the behavior is misconduct, using the path in the FAQ steps above.
