Does HashKey Exchange Use Smart Contracts? What Its Public Disclosures Show

HashKey Exchange’s disclosures describe centralized trading and custody services. They do not identify Exchange-operated contract addresses or provide smart-contract audit reports, so a code-level vulnerability assessment remains unresolved.

HashKey Exchange’s public materials describe a centralized virtual-asset trading platform with custody services, not a publicly documented smart-contract platform. The sources reviewed do not identify Exchange-operated contract addresses, publish contract code, or provide independent smart-contract audit reports. That means a code-level vulnerability assessment cannot be made from these disclosures alone.

Is HashKey Exchange a smart-contract platform or a centralized exchange?

HashKey Exchange describes itself as a Hong Kong virtual-asset trading platform. Its public homepage describes fiat transfers and digital-asset trading, while its exchange rules describe custody for client assets. Those are centralized exchange functions: customers use platform accounts and services, while the platform and its custody arrangements handle trading and asset operations.

This does not establish that the Exchange has no interaction with smart contracts. Digital assets may involve token contracts on their respective networks, and deposits or withdrawals can interact with blockchain protocols. But the reviewed materials do not provide a current inventory of networks, token contracts, or contracts operated by the Exchange. Nor do they publish Exchange-operated matching or custody contract code.

Keep the entities and products distinct. HashKey Exchange, HashKey Custody, HashKey Group, HashKey Holdings, and the HSK token are not interchangeable. A 2025 HKEX filing discusses an ETH vault and a healthcare-asset tokenization strategy, and says a transaction was executed through HashKey Exchange. It does not identify the Exchange as the operator of the planned on-chain contracts.

What does the public information establish about custody?

The Exchange rules describe client virtual assets held in segregated accounts through an associated entity, with assets divided between hot and cold wallets. The accessible copy says that no less than 98% of trading participants’ virtual assets should be stored in cold storage. Its publication date is not clear in the accessible document, so that figure should not be treated as confirmed current policy without checking the applicable rules.

HashKey Custody’s official site describes institutional controls including multi-role and multi-user approvals, whitelisting, risk controls, HSM-based key generation and storage, hot/cold wallet architecture, and operational logs. As checked on October 7, 2026, it also stated support for more than 20 blockchains and 500-plus tokens. These are vendor descriptions of HashKey Custody’s service, not independent verification of the Exchange’s implementation, a complete current asset inventory, or a smart-contract audit.

Disclosure What it supports What it does not establish
Exchange rules: segregated custody and a minimum 98% cold-storage target The rules describe a custody model and stated storage target. Current applicability, actual balances, implementation details, or contract security; the accessible rules’ publication date is unclear.
HashKey Custody site: approval controls, HSMs, wallet architecture, and supported assets The custody provider publicly describes institutional features and service coverage. Independent validation of the Exchange’s configuration, operational procedures, or on-chain code.
HashKey’s May 2025 SOC announcement The company announced SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications, describing controls related to security, availability, confidentiality, financial reporting, and data integrity. A review of a particular smart contract, a vulnerability-free system, or an on-chain audit result.

The Exchange rules also caution that virtual assets may not receive the same protection as securities under the Hong Kong statutes they cite, and distinguish client money held overseas. Those legal and custody qualifications matter to platform risk, but they do not answer whether a particular smart contract has been audited.

Where would a vulnerability assessment focus?

The following are investigation areas, not findings that HashKey Exchange has a defect or exploitable vulnerability. Public materials describe some controls at a high level but do not supply the code, procedures, or configuration evidence needed to verify them.

Custody boundaries and key control

  • Map which legal entity holds each asset and which entity controls signing authority, including the relationship between the Exchange and its associated custody entity.
  • Review role assignments, approval thresholds, separation of duties, key generation and backup, HSM configuration, recovery procedures, and hot-to-cold transfer controls.
  • Establish how the stated cold-storage target is measured, monitored, and reconciled with the assets held for clients.

The public descriptions do not disclose key ceremonies, recovery designs, detailed approval policies, or independent evidence of configuration. The existence of an HSM or a multi-approval feature, by itself, does not establish how these controls are deployed or whether they are effective.

Wallet operations and transaction authorization

  • Trace how deposit addresses are assigned and monitored, and how deposits are credited to customer accounts.
  • Examine withdrawal authorization, whitelisting, transaction screening, policy enforcement, exception handling, and emergency controls.
  • Check whether operational logs record approvals and changes in a way that supports investigation and accountability.

HashKey Custody describes some relevant features, but the reviewed sources do not expose Exchange operating procedures or implementation code. A feature list cannot show how exceptions are handled or whether controls apply consistently across assets and networks.

Token and network interfaces

A complete review would need to examine each supported asset on each network rather than treat “crypto” as one uniform integration. Relevant questions include:

  • What confirmation thresholds are used, and how are chain reorganizations or delayed finality handled?
  • How does the platform handle token upgrades, freezes, pauses, nonstandard token behavior, and other asset-specific events?
  • How are withdrawals constructed and validated for each network, and what happens when a network is congested, unavailable, or behaving unexpectedly?
  • How are forks and other token events evaluated before the platform credits, suspends, or supports an asset?

The Exchange rules discuss asset-specific custody and the handling of forks and other token events, but the reviewed material does not provide a current complete list of supported networks and token contracts. HashKey Custody’s stated asset coverage is not a substitute for that Exchange-specific inventory.

Centralized services versus on-chain code

Exchange matching, customer-account records, internal transfers, fiat rails, and custody operations can create security risks even when no public smart contract is involved. They should be assessed as platform and operational controls, separately from vulnerabilities in on-chain code. The public homepage and rules describe exchange and custody services; the reviewed sources do not publish matching or custody contract code that could be inspected.

Has HashKey Exchange published smart-contract audits?

The reviewed public sources do not identify Exchange-operated contract addresses or provide independent smart-contract audit reports. This is a limit of what those materials establish, not proof that no audit has ever been commissioned or that no contracts exist. Without verified addresses, source code or verified bytecode, deployment and upgrade details, and an audit report with scope and date, readers cannot assess a specific Exchange-operated contract’s code security.

HashKey announced SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications in May 2025. The announcement describes organizational and service-control scope, including security and data integrity. SOC certifications are not a substitute for a smart-contract audit: they do not, on their own, show that a named on-chain program was examined or is free of vulnerabilities.

What evidence would make a code-level assessment possible?

  1. Verify the operator and scope. Obtain a current inventory identifying which entity operates each relevant contract and its role in Exchange services.
  2. Verify deployments. For every contract, record the network, address, deployment status, source repository or verified bytecode, and the method used to confirm that the published source matches the deployed code.
  3. Trace authority. Document administrator, upgrade, pause, and recovery permissions; identify who controls them and how changes are authorized.
  4. Obtain audit reports. Check each report’s date, exact contract and version, scope, exclusions, unresolved findings, and whether the audited code matches the deployed version.
  5. Map custody and asset flows. Link on-chain deposits, withdrawals, and any contract calls to the relevant custody entity, approval process, and internal ledger treatment.
  6. Confirm coverage over time. Verify current exchange rules and the supported network and token list, then account for upgrades, newly supported assets, and material changes since any audit.

Until those materials are available, the defensible conclusion is limited to the documented surface: a centralized exchange and custody service with publicly described controls, but no publicly established Exchange-operated contract inventory or contract-audit record in the reviewed sources. No exploit, defect, or user loss can be inferred from that gap.
