Yes. Gemini can use location information to answer nearby-place and directions questions. That information may come from a general area inferred from your IP address, Home or Work details saved to your Google Account, precise device location used with permission, or another Google service such as Google Maps. Turning off one precise-location permission does not necessarily prevent every Google service from supplying location for a request.
What “using your location” means in Gemini
Location use is not a single switch or a synonym for GPS. Google describes several possible sources that can help Gemini answer questions involving place, distance, or directions. The source used can depend on the question, the device, and the Google services involved.

| Location source | What it can mean in practice | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| General location | An approximate area inferred from your IP address or Home or Work addresses saved to your Google Account. | Google says Gemini Apps use general location by default. It can help provide relevant local answers without establishing that Gemini used precise device location. |
| Precise device location | A more exact location from your device or browser. | Google says this is processed with permission. A permission control can limit Gemini’s or the Google app’s direct access to precise device location. |
| Location from another Google service | Precise location supplied to Gemini by a service such as Google Maps. | Google says another Google service may provide precise location even when the precise-location setting in the Google app is off. |
These distinctions matter when asking a question such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” or “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.” A useful response may require knowing roughly where you are, and a more exact “from where I am now” answer can involve precise location. But an answer using public Maps information is not, by itself, proof that Gemini accessed the phone’s GPS.
The key practical point is that a permission setting governs a particular app’s access, while a request can also involve another Google service. The Gemini web indicator, Android’s Google app permission, and Google Maps permissions therefore answer related but different questions.

What Gemini can do with Google Maps
Gemini can use public information from Google Maps to find businesses, stores, restaurants, parks, and attractions. It can provide place details such as addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings, and opening hours, and offer directions based on a travel mode. A linked place result can be opened in Maps. Saved Home and Work locations may be used for directions, and device location may be used when permission is available.
Google’s current help information says that using public Maps information requires signing in and having Keep Activity turned on. Place search and directions are unavailable in Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. Some expanded Maps features are being gradually released; Google lists eligibility limits for those features that include being at least 18, using a personal Google Account, and asking about a place in English. Consequently, two users may not see precisely the same Maps functionality.
Maps integration is not a full replacement for the Maps app. Google lists these unsupported actions:
- Saving location history.
- Using saved places other than Home or Work.
- Providing live traffic updates.
- Adding a review.
For live traffic or location-history controls, use the relevant Maps settings or app rather than assuming a Gemini answer can manage them. Gemini can give directions, but its stated Maps capabilities do not include live traffic updates.
Check precise-location access on Gemini for the web
On the web, Google provides a location indicator in the Gemini menu. It reports whether the Gemini web app has access to and is using precise location. The indicator is not a complete audit of every location source that might contribute to a particular answer.
- Open gemini.google.com.
- Open the menu and select Settings & help.
- Look at the location indicator at the bottom of the menu. Google describes it as blue when the web app has access to and is using precise location, and gray when it is not.
- If you want Gemini web to use your device’s precise location, use Update location when available and follow the browser’s permission prompt.
Interpret the indicator narrowly: it describes Gemini web’s own access and use. A gray indicator does not establish that another Google service cannot provide location to fulfill a request. Likewise, a blue indicator means the web app is using precise location, not that every response necessarily depends on it.

Check or change location permission on Android
Gemini’s mobile assistant capabilities are hosted by the Google app, so the relevant Android permission is the Google app’s location permission. Android labels and menu layouts can vary by version, but Google’s documented route is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Android Settings.
- Choose Location.
- Open App location permissions.
- Select Google.
- Review the location access choice and the Use precise location setting. Change them to match your preference.
Android may offer choices including Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. These choices trade convenience against access:
| Choice | Practical effect |
|---|---|
| Allow all the time | Permits location access outside active use as well as while using the app, subject to Android’s permission behavior. |
| Allow only while using the app | Limits access to periods when the app is in use. |
| Ask every time | Prompts you to decide when location access is requested. |
| Don’t allow | Blocks that app’s location permission. |
Turning off Use precise location is distinct from denying all location access: it limits precision rather than serving as a universal block on approximate location or location supplied by another service. If your aim is to stop the Google app from directly accessing precise device location, inspect both the permission choice and the precise-location option. Google cautions that turning device location off can affect other Google app features, including Weather and nearby Search results.
Check the other services involved
If a request depends on where you are now, review permissions for the services that may handle that request—not only Gemini’s visible control. Google says location can be supplied by another Google service, including Maps, and advises reviewing mobile app permissions when Gemini is the device assistant. The exact controls depend on the device and platform.
- On Android, inspect the Google app permission using the steps above.
- Review location permission for Google Maps and any other relevant mobile app in the device’s app-permission settings.
- On the web, consider the browser’s site permission as well as Gemini’s location indicator.
- When changing a permission, test the specific task again. A response to a general place question may still work using public Maps information or a general area, even if precise device access is restricted.
There is no single toggle described by Google as overriding every possible location source in every request. If you deny precise access in one app but retain another service that can supply location, Gemini may still receive location through that service. The available controls are useful, but they should be understood as controls on particular access paths rather than a guarantee that no location is processed.

Understand Activity, chat text, and location retention
Google makes a distinction between permissioned precise location processed from a device or browser and location processed by Gemini Apps. Google says the former is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity. It says location data that Gemini Apps process is coarsened to a general area before storage in that activity. Google’s Privacy Hub describes that general area as larger than 3 square kilometers and containing at least 1,000 users. Those figures are Google’s characterization of the stored general area, not an independent privacy guarantee or a claim about every location event.

Activity storage is also different from chat content. If you write your city or address in a prompt, or Gemini’s answer mentions a location, that reference may remain in the chat. Deleting or reviewing Gemini Apps Activity should not be treated as automatically removing location text that appears in a conversation. Google says users can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity.
To manage this area, open Gemini settings and review the Gemini Apps Activity controls. Check the chat itself for information you typed or received, since activity records and conversation text are separate considerations. Google also says Gemini automatically uses public information from Google Maps, but Keep Activity must be on to use that public Maps information.

Using public Maps information is not the same as permission to read personal information across Google services. Google says Connected Apps can be connected or disconnected in Gemini settings, and that Gemini does not access personal information or content in Google services without permission. If you have enabled a Connected App, review its connection in settings and disconnect it if you no longer want that connection available. This is separate from device location permission: changing one does not necessarily change the other.

There is no universally best setting; choose based on whether convenience or limiting precise access matters more for your use.
- You want nearby results with minimal setup: Allow the app or service permissions needed for the feature, and understand that Gemini may use general location, saved Home or Work details, or precise location when permitted.
- You want precise location only during active use: On Android, choose Allow only while using the app for Google and review Use precise location. This limits that app’s direct access but does not rule out location supplied by another service.
- You want to make each request-time decision: Choose Ask every time where Android offers it, then respond to prompts based on the task. Other services and saved account details remain separate considerations.
- You want to block a particular app’s location access: Select Don’t allow for that app. Expect location-dependent answers and other features, such as nearby Search results or Weather, to be less useful or unavailable.
- You are concerned about what is retained: Review Gemini Apps Activity and conversation text separately. Avoid including an address or other location detail in a prompt unless it is needed for the answer.
When a location-based answer does not work
If Gemini cannot answer a nearby or directions question as expected, check the feature requirements and permission path rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Quick Recap
- No Maps search or directions: Confirm you are signed in and Keep Activity is on. The feature is not available in Live chats or Gemini in Google Messages.
- The answer is not centered on your current position: Check whether Gemini web’s indicator offers Update location, or inspect the Google app’s Android permission and precise-location setting. Also consider whether another Google service has its own permission.
- A Maps option is missing: Some expanded features are rolling out gradually and have eligibility conditions, including age 18 or older, a personal Google Account, and a place-related question in English.
- Location access is disabled but local results still appear: The response may rely on general location, saved Home or Work details, or public Maps information. A single app permission does not identify every source used.
- Other Google app behavior changes after disabling location: Google notes that turning device location off may affect Weather and nearby Search results. Restore the permission if you want those functions and accept the associated access.
