You can earn rewards and build your roster without buying a pass; spending can add resources and speed up roster development, but the official information reviewed does not establish that payment is required to advance.
What can you earn without paying?
The Google Play listing describes a game built around collecting, upgrading and deploying Champions, dragons and weapons, with campaign levels, events, solo play and PvP. It says the game is free to download and includes optional in-game purchases. Google Play listing

The clearest current example of free progression is the Kingsroad season running September 14 through October 12, 2026. Completing daily and weekly goals earns points toward its free reward track. Zynga lists Common Champion Shards, Summoning Tokens and other rewards on that track. After Tier 50, players can earn a bonus chest for each additional 700 points. These are the season’s reward rules, not a promise about how quickly any player will reach a tier. Zynga’s Kingsroad announcement
Campaign rewards also give players some control over resource gathering. Zynga says each campaign level now focuses on one specific reward type, letting players choose which currency to accumulate faster and spend energy accordingly. What does paying add?
The paid Goldroad pass awards additional rewards at the same tiers reached on Kingsroad. In the September 2026 season, Zynga lists 15 Legendary Champion Shards for the Night King on Goldroad. Its Elite Goldroad upgrade adds further items, including tokens, Legendary Gear, Valyrian Essence and Skill Books. Zynga also says its enhanced in-game store lets players purchase shards, skill books, gear and iconic materials to expand and strengthen a roster. The same June 2026 roadmap describes campaign rewards as a way to target currencies through play. Summoning is another part of roster-building where resource access matters. In an announcement about summoning, Zynga acknowledged player feedback that Summon Token prices felt high and described subsequent changes to shard quantities and availability. It also noted that larger banners make it harder to target a particular Champion. These mechanics make tokens and shards useful, but do not show that real-money purchases are necessary to obtain them. Zynga’s summoning announcement

The available information supports a narrower conclusion: free play has progression routes, while purchases can provide extra resources and potentially grow a roster faster. A May 2025 App Store reviewer said they could play, advance and get new Champions without spending, while paying made account growth faster. That is one player’s experience, not evidence of typical pacing or a comparison of competitive results. App Store listing

Zynga’s published announcements do not quantify how long a non-paying player takes to reach late-game milestones, establish whether every competitive target is attainable on a preferred schedule, or compare free and paying players at the top of PvP. So it would be too strong to promise effortless free progression—or to conclude from these sources alone that spending is required or that PvP outcomes are determined by payment.

How to decide whether to spend
- If you are comfortable advancing through goals and campaign rewards at an unquantified pace, start without buying a pass.
- Consider a paid pass only if its listed rewards match the Champions or upgrade materials you want and you expect to reach the relevant tiers.
- Treat store purchases as optional convenience or roster-building choices, not as a confirmed requirement for campaign access.
