Yes. For standard copper Ethernet, keep the complete channel at or below 100 m (328 ft). That total includes the installed cable and patch cords at both ends. In a typical structured-cabling layout, the allowance is 90 m (295 ft) of permanent horizontal cable plus 10 m (33 ft) of patch cords.
What the 100-meter limit includes
The 100 m figure applies to the complete copper Ethernet channel between devices—not just the cable hidden in a wall or ceiling. Patch cords at both ends count toward the total.

These are the common structured-cabling allowances described in Schneider Electric’s Cat5e/Cat6 FAQ. A long patch lead uses more of the 10 m patch-cord allowance, leaving less for other cords.
What happens if the cable is longer?
A connection may come up beyond 100 m, but that does not mean it meets the standard or is guaranteed to operate reliably. Schneider Electric identifies excessive signal loss and electromagnetic interference as factors that can affect performance. A link light alone confirms neither certified channel performance nor a particular data rate.

For a route longer than the copper-channel limit, plan a suitable network extension rather than relying on an overlength copper run. The exact option depends on the equipment and site; the cited guidance does not establish a universal remedy for every installation.
Does cable length affect speed?
Length is one condition affecting whether the link can support its intended Ethernet application. Speed also depends on the cable category, channel conditions, installation, and connected equipment. A cable that negotiates a connection is not proof that it will sustain the required performance under all conditions.

For 10GBASE-T, Cisco’s C9350 hardware documentation specifies up to 100 m over Cat6A. Do not apply that distance to every cable category: Cat6 performance at 10 Gb/s depends on channel conditions, and historical IEEE development material includes both 55 m and 100 m Cat6 channel cases. Those cases are not a blanket guarantee for any 100 m Cat6 installation.
Choose the cable for the application
- For a 10GBASE-T channel as long as 100 m: Cisco’s cited guidance supports Cat6A. Count all patch cords in the total and follow the requirements of the connected devices.
- For Cat6 at 10 Gb/s: Do not assume the full 100 m is supported; the achievable distance depends on channel conditions.
- For an existing run: Check its total channel length, including patch leads, and consider cable category and installation conditions when diagnosing poor performance.
When buying cable, distinguish a patch lead from cable intended for a permanent installed run, and specify the required length and construction. For an existing-cable diagnosis, a qualification tester can assess more than basic continuity; a simple continuity tester does not certify category-level performance.

PoE and long Ethernet runs
Power over Ethernet does not remove the need to observe the channel limit. Cisco troubleshooting material retains the 100 m maximum for 10/100/1000BASE-T and discusses PoE operation at 100 m. For a long PoE connection, verify the complete channel length and confirm that the switch, powered device, cabling, and power requirements are compatible.

Being under 100 m is necessary for staying within the cited maximum, but it does not by itself guarantee a trouble-free link. Cable condition, installation quality, the required speed, and electromagnetic interference can all matter. If a connection is unreliable, check the whole channel and its components rather than assuming length is the only possible cause.
