Yes. DreamHost supports SFTP for website file transfers over port 22. It is an account-level hosting feature, not a separate SFTP product. You can use a graphical client such as FileZilla to upload and download files; use SSH when you need terminal access to run commands. Whether DreamHost is a good fit depends less on SFTP itself than on the plan’s resource sharing, WordPress management, and level of server control.
How DreamHost SFTP works
SFTP encrypts the connection used to transfer files between your computer and your hosting account. DreamHost says website users are configured for SFTP on port 22. Its support guidance warns that ordinary FTP on port 21 is not secure and should not be used. See DreamHost’s FTP overview and website security guidance.

For routine file management, connect through an SFTP client such as FileZilla or Cyberduck. SFTP and SSH are related but serve different tasks: SFTP transfers files through a client, while SSH opens a terminal session for commands and troubleshooting. SSH access must be enabled for the applicable server user; DreamPress has separate SSH instructions, so do not assume every plan uses the same setup. DreamHost explains the distinction in its SSH overview.

A connection requires four values: hostname, username, password, and port 22. DreamHost says the website’s credentials are available in the website management area after the domain is configured on a hosting plan. Find the values for your own site rather than copying example credentials from another account. The provider’s FTP users and file management instructions cover credential access; DreamPress has separate instructions.
Which DreamHost plan fits your needs?
Choose by how much server administration you want, whether you need protected resources, whether you want WordPress-specific management, and whether you require root access. SFTP availability alone is not a reason to choose one plan over another.
| Plan type | Management and resources | Root access | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Hosting (shared) | Resources are shared with other sites. DreamHost’s Web Hosting Launch listing showed 25 websites, 25 GB NVMe SSD, daily backups, unmetered bandwidth, and free SSL when checked in 2026. | No | A starting point for many sites that do not need isolated resources or server-level configuration. |
| Managed VPS | DreamHost describes protected RAM and provider-managed software and security. Its current Managed VPS page lists unlimited SFTP users and SSH access. | No | More protected resources without taking on management of the server stack. |
| VPS | Provides greater server control; managing that control also means taking on more responsibility. | Yes, with root/sudo access described in DreamHost’s plan comparison. | Readers who need custom server configuration and can manage a less managed environment. |
| DreamPress | Managed WordPress hosting with WordPress-specific features. Plans are configured around a limited site count; check the selected plan’s site allowance and backup terms. | No | WordPress users who prefer a WordPress-focused managed service. |
Plan access and features are described in DreamHost’s hosting plan comparison and VPS product information. Check the selected plan’s current details before buying, especially if root access or a particular SSH workflow is essential.

What the listed prices mean
When DreamHost’s plan page was checked in 2026, it displayed the following USD monthly equivalents for an annual term. These were introductory first-year prices with higher renewal rates, not guaranteed current offers; DreamHost says checkout charges the full term plus taxes.

What SFTP does—and does not—secure
SFTP encrypts file transfers in transit, but it does not secure an entire website by itself. A stolen password, vulnerable application, or overly broad file permissions can still put a site at risk. DreamHost also recommends using a unique web user for each site, setting appropriate file and directory permissions, adding SSL, limiting developer access, and keeping site applications updated. Those controls address risks that encrypted transfer alone cannot remove; see its security guidance.
