Adding password reset to an existing service gives an AI coding assistant a codebase, conventions, and a defined behavior to work within. Building an account-management app leaves more decisions open: who uses it, where data goes, which components must connect, and how the system will be deployed and operated. AI can help with either task, but the integration and validation work grows with the scope.
What separates a feature from an app?
A feature is a change to a product that already has users, interfaces, and technical boundaries. The repository, issue, existing behavior, and team conventions give the work context. GitHub documents a workflow that can start with an issue or repository, assign an agent, review its pull request, and continue in an IDE: GitHub Copilot coding agent documentation.

An app is a connected product, not simply a larger feature. It can involve user interface, backend code, AI flows, data handling, infrastructure, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing optimization. Google describes these components and lifecycle concerns in its app-prototyping announcement. The distinction is practical rather than absolute: an app can begin as a small prototype, while a feature can touch many parts of a mature service.

| Dimension | Feature in an existing product | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Context and scope | Starts with an existing repository, issue, conventions, interfaces, and expected behavior. | Requires defining users, requirements, system boundaries, and data flows as well as implementing them. |
| Integration boundaries | Must fit the existing product and avoid disrupting behavior elsewhere; a limited edit can still have wider effects. | Must connect product layers such as UI and backend, and may also depend on infrastructure and external services. |
| Validation and operations | Review the change, run relevant tests, and check its effect on existing behavior before merging through the team’s normal process. | Test complete user journeys, security and privacy assumptions, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing operation—not just whether code compiles. |
These are differences in the amount of system context and coordination to manage, not a claim that AI writes one kind of code and humans write the other. Google’s IDE documentation describes generated changes in a diff view that developers can accept or reject; the diff still needs review: Gemini Code Assist code-generation documentation.

A practical workflow for an AI-assisted feature
- Specify the behavior. Describe what a user should be able to do, relevant edge cases, and what must not change.
- Give the assistant bounded context. Point it to the issue, relevant files, interfaces, and project conventions rather than asking it to infer the whole product.
- Request a limited change. Ask for a focused implementation and tests that fit the existing codebase.
- Inspect the diff. Check changed files and surrounding behavior; accept only changes you understand and intend to ship.
- Run relevant tests and review risks. Test the expected behavior and nearby regression paths, then consider security and data handling.
- Use the team’s normal review and merge process. Treat generated code as a proposed change, not as approval to bypass review.
This sequence is practical guidance based on documented issue-to-pull-request workflows and diff-based review capabilities; it is not a guarantee that a particular sequence catches every defect.
A practical workflow for an AI-assisted app
- Clarify users and requirements. Define the core user journeys, permissions, and what success looks like before choosing implementation details.
- Set architecture and data boundaries. Decide what components exist, how they communicate, what data they can access, and where it is stored.
- Build connected pieces incrementally. Develop the UI, backend, and any AI flows in reviewable steps, checking each interface between components.
- Test end to end. Exercise real user journeys across the connected system, including failure paths and assumptions that a compile check cannot verify.
- Review security and privacy. Check access control, data exposure, and the information sent to AI services.
- Plan deployment and operation. Establish how the app will be released, monitored, troubleshot, and maintained after launch.
Google has described an app-testing agent for end-to-end tests and lifecycle assistance for deployment and operations in its app-building announcement. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence that an app is production-ready or that every workflow is automated. The checklist above is practical guidance, not a vendor-prescribed process.

Security applies at both scopes
Whether the request changes one feature or spans an app, consider what information the coding assistant receives. Google’s Gemini Code Assist documentation says prompts, responses, and contextual file snippets can be processed, and that Google does not use customer data to train models without permission: Gemini Code Assist security documentation. Review the applicable product settings and terms for your environment rather than assuming all tools handle data the same way.

Google Cloud states: “In general, Google recommends using a secure software development lifecycle (SDLC) for developing applications, regardless of whether you’re using AI coding assistance.” AI assistance does not remove the need for secure development practices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to break the request into smaller steps
Use the number of boundaries as a guide. A focused change with clear existing context may be a reasonable bounded task. If the request crosses more components, user journeys, data stores, or operational responsibilities, ask AI for smaller reviewable steps and invest more in integration, end-to-end, and security checks. There is no source-backed productivity percentage that establishes how much faster one scope is than the other; the useful distinction is the work that must be defined, connected, and verified.
