Not on the evidence DirectStorage alone provides. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a way for games to use fast NVMe storage with less CPU overhead, but its Windows documentation does not require PCIe 5.0 or show that Gen5 drives outperform Gen4 drives in PC games. To decide whether a Gen5 SSD is worth buying, look for controlled benchmarks in the specific games you play—not just the drive’s advertised sequential speed.
What DirectStorage does—and what it does not promise
DirectStorage is a software feature that lets games make use of high-speed storage, including NVMe SSDs. Microsoft describes its goal as enabling multiple-gigabyte-per-second small reads with minimal CPU overhead. That describes the intended storage path, not a guaranteed improvement in every game or system. Microsoft’s Windows DirectStorage overview does not specify PCIe 5.0 as a requirement.

DirectStorage is therefore not a simple rule that a newer PCIe generation automatically means faster game loading or asset streaming. The result depends on how a game uses the technology and on the rest of the system. A drive’s peak sequential throughput alone does not establish how it performs in a game’s particular workload.
Does DirectStorage require PCIe 5.0?
No PCIe 5.0 requirement is stated in Microsoft’s Windows overview. It identifies NVMe SSDs as an example of high-speed storage, without prescribing a PCIe generation. Microsoft’s separate DirectStorage GDK overview discusses PCIe-connected NVMe storage, but that page is specifically about Xbox Series X|S GDK. Its platform context does not establish a Gen5 requirement for Windows gaming PCs.

The GDK page gives a design goal of sustaining 50,000 IOPS while using 5%–10% of a single CPU core. Those figures belong to the Xbox Series X|S GDK documentation; they are not measured outcomes from Windows PC games and do not compare Gen5 with Gen4 SSDs.
Does DirectStorage make Gen5 faster than Gen4 in games?
The cited Microsoft material does not answer that comparative performance question. It explains DirectStorage’s aims and platform support, but does not provide controlled PC game benchmarks comparing PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Without game-specific results, there is no supported basis here for claiming that Gen5 delivers a meaningful gaming gain—or that it never can.

When evaluating a particular drive, prioritize benchmark results from DirectStorage-enabled games that identify the game version, SSD models, PC configuration, and test method. Compare actual loading or asset-streaming results alongside the price difference, capacity, compatibility, and sustained performance. Treat advertised sequential speeds as a drive specification, not as a substitute for game testing.

Windows BypassIO
Microsoft describes BypassIO as part of the Windows infrastructure that supports DirectStorage, with availability starting in Windows 11. Its driver documentation scopes BypassIO to NVMe devices. Compression paths
DirectStorage’s compression support reference lists GPU-optimized, GPU-fallback, and CPU-fallback modes. The path used can depend on system conditions; the reference does not tie these modes to PCIe 4.0 or 5.0. See Microsoft’s compression-support API reference.

- Game-specific evidence: Look for controlled comparisons in the games you play, not only advertised maximum transfer rates.
- Platform compatibility: Check whether your motherboard and CPU provide the required PCIe connection and lanes for the drive, and confirm which M.2 slot supports that connection.
- Capacity and cost: Compare the capacity you need and the actual price premium against a suitable Gen4 option.
- Sustained use and thermals: Check sustained performance and cooling requirements for the drive and your system, rather than assuming peak speeds are maintained during use.
If those checks point to Gen5 for your broader storage needs, it may still be a reasonable choice. But DirectStorage support by itself is not evidence that the extra expense will improve your gaming experience.
