Deleting an archived livestream removes that video from your channel, but it is not a universal way to clear copyright consequences. What happens depends on whether the notice is a Content ID claim or a copyright removal request—and, for a scheduled removal request, whether its seven-day window is still open.
First identify the notice in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio and inspect the livestream archive’s Restrictions or Claims notice and its details. YouTube treats a Content ID claim and a copyright removal request (also called a takedown) as different processes. A removal request may lead to a copyright strike; a Content ID claim usually affects the video rather than the channel or account. The notice type determines which options apply. YouTube explains the distinction between copyright claims and removal requests.

| Notice | What it generally means | What deletion can do |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | The rights holder’s policy may monetize, track, or block the video, sometimes with different outcomes by region. | It removes the VOD from your channel. YouTube’s explicit statement that uploader claims close due to video deletion applies to channels linked to a Content Manager; it is not a guarantee about every creator-facing claim record or a resolution of copyright liability. |
| Copyright removal request | A formal request to remove content. If it is scheduled, YouTube gives the uploader a seven-day window to act before removal and a strike. | Deleting during the seven-day window avoids the strike. Deleting after the window does not resolve a strike already applied. |
Why livestream archives can be claimed after the broadcast
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content while they are running. If you choose to archive a completed stream, the archived video can receive a Content ID claim afterward. YouTube states: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.” A live broadcast may also be interrupted or terminated if copyrighted material remains in it. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

If it is a Content ID claim and you want to keep the VOD
YouTube Studio offers editing options that can clear a claim if all claimed material is successfully removed. You can trim out the claimed segment, replace the claimed song, or erase or mute the claimed audio. Partial removal may not be enough: YouTube says all claimed content must be removed for the claim to clear through editing. Its documented options are described in Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.

If you believe the claim is invalid, you may dispute it only if you have a valid reason and the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes, so do not dispute merely because you disagree with the outcome or prefer to keep the archive.
If it is a Content ID claim and you do not need the VOD
You can delete the archive, which removes the video from your channel. Do not assume that deletion guarantees the claim record will close in every account context, or that it settles any underlying copyright issue. YouTube specifically says uploader claims on channels linked to a Content Manager stay active unless manually closed or closed due to video deletion; that statement is scoped to those channels. Check the claim status after deletion rather than treating removal as proof of broader resolution. YouTube’s Content Manager claim-status guidance provides that context.

If it is a scheduled copyright removal request
Check the notice for the deadline. If the seven-day window is still open, deleting the content within it avoids a strike. Once the window has passed and a strike has been applied, deleting the video does not resolve that strike. Follow the specific instructions and timing shown in Studio; a Content ID edit or dispute process is not a substitute for responding to a removal request. YouTube describes the removal-request process.
How to delete the livestream archive
- In YouTube Studio, open the Content section and select the Live tab.
- Find the archived stream and open its options or details.
- Choose the delete option and confirm only if you are sure you no longer need the VOD.
- Return to the notice in Studio to check the status of the claim or removal request; do not infer that every copyright consequence has been cleared solely because the VOD is gone.
YouTube also allows livestream archives’ privacy settings to be changed. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. See Archive live streams.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a claim with a strike: a Content ID claim is not itself a copyright removal request or strike.
- Deleting too late: deletion avoids a strike only during the scheduled removal request’s seven-day window; it does not undo an existing strike.
- Removing only part of the claimed material: Studio editing clears a claim only when all claimed content is successfully removed.
- Assuming deletion settles the legal question: removing the VOD is a platform action, not a determination of whether a use was lawful or a claim was correct.
