No—DCS World does not require a joystick. Its Steam listing names keyboard, mouse and joystick as input options. A joystick, throttle or other flight-simulation hardware is an optional choice, not a prerequisite for starting the game.
What controls can you use in DCS World?
The DCS World Steam listing identifies keyboard, mouse and joystick as input options. That establishes that a joystick is not required; it does not establish that those options feel equally comfortable or precise in play.

What does Eagle Dynamics recommend?
Eagle Dynamics’ support FAQ includes a joystick and pedals in its recommended system configurations. “Recommended” should not be read as “mandatory”: the Steam listing explicitly includes keyboard and mouse among the input options.

The company’s Input Controller Walk Through covers configuring devices and shows separate keyboard, joystick, throttle and mouse columns. It documents ways to bind controls; it does not say that a stick or throttle is necessary.
Should you buy a joystick or HOTAS?
If you want dedicated physical flight controls, a PC flight-simulation joystick is a reasonable first category to consider. A HOTAS setup—“hands on throttle and stick”—adds a separate throttle for players who want distinct controls for those functions. Both are optional upgrades, and the sources do not establish that a particular model is best or necessary.

When comparing hardware, consider the number and type of analog axes, the buttons and hats available for bindings, whether a separate throttle is included, the desk space it needs and the total cost. These are practical selection criteria, not a tested ranking of devices.
