Does Clearing a Game’s Shader Cache Make Stuttering Worse?

Clearing a game’s shader cache can mean shaders need to be compiled again, sometimes during gameplay. Here’s when that can cause stutter—and when clearing may help.

Yes, it can—temporarily. If clearing removes shader data a game or graphics driver would otherwise reuse, that data may need to be compiled again. When compilation happens during gameplay, it can cause stutter. But clearing is not guaranteed to make stuttering worse: removing corrupted cache files can also be a useful troubleshooting step in some cases.

Why clearing a cache can cause stutter

A shader cache keeps shader-related data that software may reuse instead of generating again. Microsoft’s documentation describes persistent disk caches and driver-managed compilation, but there is no single cache shared by every game and system. The relevant data may be managed by a game, the operating system, or the graphics driver, depending on the implementation and graphics API. Microsoft’s D3D12 shader cache documentation explains that cache types can differ and that a given type may not exist in every implementation.

If a needed shader is no longer available in a reusable cache, it may have to be compiled again. Microsoft notes that just-in-time compilation during gameplay can lead to in-game shader-compilation stutter. If compilation instead happens during a loading screen or a dedicated preparation step, the disruption may occur there rather than during play. The timing depends on the game, graphics API, driver, and cache that was cleared.

When clearing may help instead

Cache data can be damaged. NVIDIA’s support guidance says damaged NVIDIA shader-cache files may cause games or applications to crash on launch, show lower performance, or display visual artifacts; it also says deleted files are recreated the next time an app or game launches. In that specific troubleshooting context, clearing the affected NVIDIA cache may help the software rebuild it. That does not mean clearing a cache is a general fix for every kind of stutter. NVIDIA’s instructions for deleting NVIDIA Shader Cache files apply to NVIDIA’s cache, not every Windows cache or GPU vendor.

Situation What may happen How to interpret it
Valid, reusable shader data is removed The game or driver may compile needed shaders again; if that work occurs during play, it can cause temporary hitches. A possible short-term consequence, not a guaranteed result or a measured rebuild duration.
Damaged NVIDIA shader-cache files are removed NVIDIA says files are recreated when an app or game next launches; its support guidance identifies launch crashes, lower performance, and visual artifacts as possible symptoms of damaged files. A vendor-specific troubleshooting step for suspected cache problems, not proof that ordinary stutter is cache-related.

Should you clear the shader cache to fix stuttering?

Clear it only when there is a concrete reason to suspect the relevant cache is corrupted or when the game or GPU vendor recommends doing so. If you are troubleshooting, note when the stutter occurs and whether it began after a driver update, a game update, or a cache-clearing action. Those clues can help distinguish shader preparation from other possible causes, but they do not establish the cause by themselves.

  • Use the cache control documented for your game, GPU vendor, or platform; do not assume that a folder path or cleanup method applies across vendors.
  • If the game offers shader preparation or compilation before play, allow it to finish before judging performance.
  • After clearing, observe whether hitches occur during startup, loading, or gameplay. The timing can indicate when compilation is happening, but stutter can also have causes unrelated to shader caches.
  • If the issue persists, avoid repeatedly clearing caches without a specific reason; each clearing can remove data that might otherwise be reused.

For AMD Radeon graphics, AMD says Radeon Shader Cache stores frequently used game shaders rather than regenerating them each time, with faster loading and reduced CPU use as stated benefits. AMD documents AMD optimized as the default and says the control can be disabled globally. Those details describe AMD’s settings and should not be assumed to apply to NVIDIA, Intel, consoles, or a game-managed cache. AMD’s Radeon settings guidance covers its own controls.

Can shader preparation avoid some stutter?

Precompiling can move some shader work out of gameplay. Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery as precompiling shaders for supported games and delivering them through supported Windows 11 Direct3D 12 setups. Support depends on Windows, GPU and driver compatibility, and storefront integration; it is not a cache-clearing remedy available to every game or PC. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview describes the feature and its requirements.

In a May 15, 2026 DirectX Developer Blog post, edited June 11, Microsoft said the public preview had expanded to the Xbox PC app and AMD RDNA GPUs, and reported up to 90% reduction in load time. That is Microsoft’s stated benefit for Advanced Shader Delivery—not a general benchmark of clearing shader caches or a result guaranteed across systems. Microsoft’s announcement provides the dated availability and performance claim.
