Does Claude Code Token Usage Include Tool Calls and Project Files?

Tool calls and project-file contents can contribute to Claude Code token usage when they enter the model’s context. Here is what counts and how to interpret /usage for API and subscription access.

Yes. Claude Code can use tokens for tool definitions, tool calls and results, command output, errors, and project-file contents that it loads into context. But simply having files in a repository does not mean Claude Code sends every file to the model on every turn. How to interpret the usage figure also depends on whether you sign in through the API or use a subscription plan.

What counts toward Claude Code token usage?

Tokens are counted for content that Claude processes in a request. That can include the tool definitions available to Claude and the content exchanged during tool use: the call itself and the result returned to the model. Anthropic’s tool-use pricing documentation explains how tool definitions and tool-use content factor into requests.

In Claude Code, command output, errors, and large file contents can add to usage as well. A tool call does not have one fixed token price: the amount depends on the definitions and the size and content of the result Claude receives. A short command result and a long log, for example, contribute different amounts of context.

Do project files count if they are in the repository?

Not automatically just because they exist. Claude Code loads applicable project instruction files into context, while other source files may enter context when Claude reads them or a tool returns their contents. Anthropic’s documentation on how Claude remembers your project describes project instructions and memory; its cost guidance notes that codebase size can affect usage. The documentation does not say that every file in a repository is sent on every request.

The useful distinction is between a file being present and its contents being processed. Instructions Claude Code loads, files Claude reads, and tool output containing file contents can all contribute tokens. A file that remains unread is not established as part of that request’s context.

How to check usage in Claude Code

  1. Run /usage in Claude Code.
  2. If you use API access, check the Session block for token counts by model and a local total-cost estimate. The estimate uses list pricing unless an organization administrator has configured model pricing.
  3. For authoritative API billing, compare the estimate with the Claude Console Usage page. Anthropic describes the CLI figure as an estimate, not the final billing record.
  4. If you use Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription access, read the plan-usage information rather than treating the API session-cost estimate as your subscription bill.

For API users, current Claude Code documentation says session totals reset when /clear starts a new session. For subscription users, the displayed plan figures are approximate and based on local session history on that machine; they may not include activity from other devices or Claude.ai. Some breakdown rows and features depend on Claude Code version, so a missing item may reflect version-dependent behavior. See Anthropic’s CLI reference for command details.

Why can usage differ between sessions?

Anthropic sums up the main relationship this way: “Token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use.” The model, codebase size, and usage pattern all affect context size and usage. Multiple Claude Code instances or automation can add activity; prompt caching can reduce the cost of repeated content, while auto-compaction summarizes conversation history as it approaches context limits. In an agent team, each teammate has its own context window, so usage can grow with the number of teammates and how long they run. See Anthropic’s Claude Code cost guidance.

Anthropic’s cost page also gives an enterprise estimate of around $13 per developer per active day and $150–250 per developer per month, and says costs remain below $30 per active day for 90% of users. Those are estimates for enterprise deployments, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual developer. The documentation does not state a publication year for these figures.

How to compare usage figures fairly

Before comparing two totals, make sure they cover the same kind of access and reporting scope. API token and cost reporting is not interchangeable with subscription-plan usage information.

  • Compare the same reporting window and session scope.
  • Account for the model used, context size, and volume of tool results or command output.
  • Check whether prompt caching affected repeated content.
  • For subscription usage, remember that a local breakdown may omit work on other machines or Claude.ai.
  • Consider activity from multiple instances, subagents, agent teams, or automation.
