On desktop, it deactivates eligible tabs you are not using; when you open one again, Chrome reloads it. A reload may not preserve every piece of unsaved page state, so save important work on the site itself before switching away. You can turn Memory Saver off or exclude specific sites from deactivation.
What happens when Memory Saver deactivates a tab?
The tab stays open in Chrome, but its page is unloaded to free computer memory. When you return to it, Chrome automatically reloads the page. Google describes this behavior in its Chrome performance guidance.
Reloading is not the same as restoring every detail of the page exactly as it was. Save a document, draft, form, or other important work through the website or app before leaving the tab. Google lists partially filled forms among conditions that may prevent a tab from being deactivated, but that is not a guarantee that all unsaved content will be protected.
Can you stop Chrome from deactivating tabs?
Yes. In desktop Chrome, you can disable Memory Saver altogether, keep particular sites active, or choose how soon eligible tabs become inactive.

Turn Memory Saver off
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
- Go to Settings → Performance.
- Switch Memory Saver off.
Keep a site active
- Open Settings → Performance.
- Under Always keep these sites active, add the site you want to exempt.
Choose a deactivation level
Under Memory Saver, Chrome offers three levels. Google’s descriptions compare their timing, not a guaranteed memory saving:

| Moderate | Waits longer before deactivating inactive tabs. |
| Balanced (recommended) | Chrome’s recommended setting; Google does not state a specific wait time. |
| Maximum | Deactivates eligible tabs after a shorter time. |
Google does not quantify how much memory each level saves or promise that a level will retain all unsaved page state. The settings and descriptions are documented in Personalize Chrome performance.

Is Memory Saver the same as ending a Chrome task?
No. Google’s warning that unsaved work will be lost appears in its instructions for choosing End Process in Chrome Task Manager. That warning concerns forcibly ending a task; it is not Google’s description of Memory Saver. See Speed up Google Chrome.
Why did a tab reload, and what should you check?
If a tab reloads after you switch away, check whether Memory Saver is on and whether the site is listed under Always keep these sites active. Memory Saver is one possible explanation, but Google’s guidance about the feature does not establish the cause of every unexpected reload.

Does this setting work on phones?
Google’s instructions for personalizing Memory Saver apply to desktop Chrome. Google says performance settings cannot be personalized on iOS or Android, so the desktop controls described above are not available there.
