Yes, limiting an iPhone to 80% can reduce battery wear over time, particularly if you often charge it or leave it plugged in for long stretches. Apple says the setting can help preserve battery lifespan, but it does not specify how many extra months or charge cycles an individual phone will gain. The trade-off is straightforward: you start the day with less charge available.
How an 80% Charge Limit can help
On iPhone 15 and later, Charge Limit lets you choose a maximum level in 5% increments from 80% to 100%. With an 80% limit, the phone stops charging near that level rather than routinely reaching a full charge. Apple says this can help reduce battery wear, especially for people who charge frequently or keep an iPhone connected to power for long periods. This is a cap, not a faster or fundamentally different charging method. If the battery level falls by more than 5% while the phone remains connected, charging resumes. The iPhone may also occasionally charge to 100% to keep its estimate of the battery’s state of charge accurate.

Apple does not quantify the lifespan benefit. There is no established percentage improvement, guaranteed increase in cycle count, or fixed number of extra months to expect from choosing 80%.

80% Charge Limit vs. Optimized Battery Charging
Both settings can reduce time spent at a full charge, but they work differently. The Charge Limit is a maximum; Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and delays charging past 80% in certain circumstances, then aims to finish charging close to when it expects you to unplug the phone. Apple explains both options.

Which setting should you use?
Choose 80% if you usually have charge to spare
For an iPhone 15 or later that routinely ends the day with plenty of battery remaining, 80% is a reasonable longevity-oriented choice. It reduces the maximum charge in exchange for less time at a high state of charge.
Choose a higher limit if 80% is not enough
If an 80% cap leaves you short, set a higher limit or 100%. On iPhone 15 and later, the limit can be adjusted in 5% steps. If you use a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging can delay the final portion of charging when your habits allow it. Apple says the iPhone may recommend a limit based on your charging habits.

On iPhone 14 or earlier
Apple’s selectable Charge Limit, including the 80% choice described here, is for iPhone 15 and later. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Optimized Battery Charging where available rather than looking for the newer adjustable cap. The settings path varies by model.
Set or adjust the limit
- On iPhone 15 or later, open Settings > Battery > Charging.
- Choose a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments.
- If you choose 100%, use the available Optimized Battery Charging option if you want the phone to delay a full charge in circumstances it predicts will involve a long connection to power.
Heat matters too
An 80% cap is only one part of battery care. Apple says iPhone is designed for ambient temperatures of 62°–72°F (16°–22°C) and advises against using or charging it above 95°F (35°C), because high ambient temperatures can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Charging itself warms the battery, so avoiding excessive heat is important even if you use a charge limit. See Apple’s battery-maintenance guidance.

What Apple’s cycle figures do—and do not—mean
Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 and later, the design target is 80% after 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. Apple notes that actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. These are battery design specifications, not a promise about an individual phone, and they do not measure how much extra lifespan an 80% limit provides.
