If your iPhone’s 80% charge limit is not enough for the day, raise it: on iPhone 15 models and later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging and choose 90%, 95%, or 100%. You can lower it again when you expect to spend more time near a charger. If your iPhone is already set to 100% but pauses near 80%, check Optimized Battery Charging or whether the phone is too warm.
Raise the charge limit when you need more battery today
On iPhone 15 models and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging, then select a Charge Limit above 80%. The setting is available from 80% to 100% in 5-percentage-point increments. Apple does not specify one best percentage for everyone, so choose a higher limit when your day calls for more charge and return to 80% when that suits your routine.

A higher limit gives you more of the battery’s available charge for the day, but it cannot guarantee a particular number of extra hours: runtime depends on how you use the phone. Apple presents lower charge limits and optimized charging as ways to reduce battery wear over time, not as a reason to avoid charging above 80% when you need the battery. Why an iPhone may stop charging near 80%
Charge Limit is set to 80%
On iPhone 15 models and later, Charge Limit is a user-selected ceiling. Once the phone reaches within a few percentage points of the chosen limit, it can stop charging. If it remains connected and the charge drops more than 5 percentage points below that limit, charging resumes. Occasionally, the iPhone may charge to 100% even when a lower limit is selected, to keep its battery-charge estimates accurate.

Optimized Battery Charging is delaying a full charge
When the Charge Limit is set to 100% on iPhone 15 models and later, Optimized Battery Charging may hold charging beyond 80% and finish closer to the time the iPhone expects you to unplug it. If you need a full charge sooner, check the Lock Screen notification for the expected completion time: touch and hold it, then tap Charge Now.
Apple says Optimized Battery Charging needs at least 14 days to learn a routine, and at least nine charges of five hours or more in a given location before it engages. Those are Apple’s stated conditions; they do not guarantee the same charging schedule for every person or location. The phone is too warm
Temperature protection is separate from Charge Limit. If the iPhone or charger is hot, move them to a cooler place and let the phone’s temperature fall before expecting charging to continue. Apple describes this behavior in its iPhone charging troubleshooting guidance.
Find the right setting for your iPhone model
Apple’s manual Charge Limit setting applies to iPhone 15 models and later. For iPhone 14 models and earlier, Apple documents Optimized Battery Charging rather than a user-selected Charge Limit. To check that setting, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple warns that turning off charging optimizations can increase battery wear.

If the iPhone still will not charge as expected
- Let the phone cool down. If it is warm, move it and the charger somewhere cooler and wait for the temperature to drop.
- Check the charging accessories. Look for damage to the cable or adapter; do not use damaged accessories. Make sure the connection to the iPhone and power source is firm.
- Try another outlet or a known-good power source. This helps distinguish a power-source problem from a phone problem.
- Check the charging port. If you see debris, clear it carefully rather than forcing an object into the port.
- Leave the iPhone connected for 30 minutes. If it still will not charge after these checks, Apple says service may be needed.
These steps follow Apple’s troubleshooting advice for an iPhone that will not charge. An 80% limit by itself does not mean the battery needs replacement.

If you prefer to keep the limit at 80%, reduce power use or plan a way to recharge away from an outlet. The effect of these changes depends on what you do with the phone.

- Turn on Low Power Mode.
- Reduce screen brightness.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of cellular data where practical.
- Open Settings > Battery to review which apps are using the most battery.
- Consider a power bank if you need to recharge while away from an outlet; choose one based on your device and needs.
