Does Changing the Windows Clock Format Affect Alarms and Calendar Events?

Windows clock format changes how times appear. Outlook events are stored separately from their display, while the Clock app documentation does not explicitly guarantee what happens to saved alarm values after a format change.

Changing Windows between a 12-hour and 24-hour clock changes how time is displayed; it is not the same as changing an alarm’s scheduled time, a calendar event, or your time zone. Microsoft says Outlook stores calendar item start and end times in UTC, while its displayed clock format follows regional or calendar preferences. For alarms in the Windows Clock app, Microsoft documents delivery conditions but does not explicitly confirm whether a saved alarm’s underlying time is preserved after a format change. If an alarm is important, check it afterward.

What changes—and what does not

A clock format determines whether a time appears with AM/PM markers, such as 3:30 PM, or in 24-hour form, such as 15:30. Windows provides this as a display-format setting. It does not, by itself, change the system’s time zone or manually set the date and time.

Outlook’s documentation distinguishes event storage from display: calendar item start and end times are saved in UTC, and the time shown can depend on regional or calendar preferences. That supports the conclusion that changing only the 12/24-hour format does not reschedule Outlook events. A time-zone change is different and can alter the local time shown for an event.

How to change Windows between 12-hour and 24-hour time

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft’s documented route is through Control Panel. The category label can vary slightly by version.

Amazon Basics Small Digital Oval Alarm Clock with LED Display, Nightlight, Snooze Function & Battery Backup, Black, 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 Inches
  • Digital alarm clock with a 0.7-inch green LED display for easily checking the time at a glance
  • Built-in nightlight gently illuminates a dark room
  • Repeating snooze function makes it possible to sleep a little longer
  • AC powered with integrated power supply. Batteries may be used as a backup power source to ensure time and alarms are retained in memory for 8 hours (refer to User Manual for details)
  • Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 inches (LxWxH); weighs 0.4 pounds (6.6 oz) Note: Batteries are not included
  1. Open Control Panel, then go to Clock and Region or Clock, Language, and Region.
  2. Select Change date, time, or number formats.
  3. On the Formats tab, choose the patterns you want. For a 24-hour clock, select HH:mm for short time and HH:mm:ss for long time. For a 12-hour clock, select h:mm:tt for short time and h:mm:ss:tt for long time.
  4. Apply the changes. Check the clock and any apps where you rely on time labels.

These settings change formatting, not the time zone. Windows lists date, time, and time-zone controls separately under Settings > Time & language > Date & time. See Microsoft’s Windows format instructions for Outlook calendars and its guide to time, date, and time-zone settings in Windows.

Will Windows Clock alarms move?

A 12/24-hour change is a presentation setting, so it should not be confused with changing the scheduled time. However, Microsoft’s guidance for the Windows Clock app does not explicitly state whether a saved alarm’s underlying value is preserved when the display format changes. That detail is not established by the cited alarm instructions.

Make sure alarms can be delivered

Time format is separate from whether a notification can appear. Microsoft says Clock alarms and timers can work while the app is closed or the device is locked, but notifications require the device to be awake. If Windows warns that an alarm will appear only while the device is awake, review sleep settings. Microsoft also advises keeping a laptop or tablet plugged in and setting the volume high enough to hear the alarm. See Microsoft’s Clock app alarm and timer guidance.

What changes in Outlook depends on which version you use

Outlook version Where its time display comes from Separate time-zone control
Classic Outlook for Windows Uses the computer’s country or region settings for calendar time display. Outlook has separate time-zone settings.
New Outlook for Windows, Outlook.com, and Outlook on the web Offer calendar date- and time-format preferences; defaults come from the Outlook account. Calendar settings provide a separate time-zone choice.

For new Outlook, Outlook.com, or Outlook on the web, use the calendar’s own preferences if you want to change its format without changing Windows formatting. Microsoft’s calendar personalization guidance covers those settings. For classic Outlook, Microsoft’s time-zone guidance explains that calendar item start and end times are saved in UTC.

  • Display format: Is the time shown in 12-hour or 24-hour form? This changes how the value looks, not which hour it represents.
  • Time zone: Is the Windows time zone correct, and does Outlook’s calendar use the expected zone? Windows and Outlook expose time-zone settings separately from display formatting.
  • Scheduled event time: Does the event itself have the intended start and end times? Outlook stores those values in UTC and presents them according to the relevant settings.

Changing a time zone can change the local time shown for a scheduled event; changing 12/24-hour formatting alone changes only its presentation.
