Choose a brew log you’ll actually use: an app if you want structured entries and built-in ways to find or compare them, a spreadsheet if you want to design your own fields and analysis, or a notebook if you prefer handwriting and freeform notes. None is proven to make better coffee. The practical difference is how each handles recording, reviewing, and keeping your brew history.
What should a useful coffee brew log record?
Record enough consistent context to make a brew understandable later. Useful details include the coffee or bean, dose, grinder setting, water amount and temperature, brew method, technique, output, and tasting notes. You can keep the record short; consistency matters more than collecting every possible measurement.

A home-brewer discussion gives examples of people tracking coffee, grinder configuration, water temperature, and grams or milliliters, using a spreadsheet, phone notes, a small notebook, or recipe cards. Those are individual approaches, not a controlled comparison: the discussion in r/Coffee.
How do the three formats compare?
| What matters | Dedicated app | Spreadsheet | Notebook or recipe cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logging during a brew | Structured fields and sometimes timers; the workflow varies by app. | Flexible, but you may need to design the entry layout first. | Freeform and device-free; handwriting can limit later transcription. |
| Finding and comparing brews | History, search, filters, or statistics may be built in. | Custom tables and charts are possible, but you create and maintain them. | Usually requires manual searching and comparison. |
| Customization | Depends on the app; some allow configurable methods or fields. | High control over columns, tabs, and formulas. | High freeform control over what and how you record. |
| Portability and backup | Check storage location, export, backup, and phone-change procedures. | Depends on the service you use and your backup habits. | A physical copy can be lost or damaged; digital backup is not inherent. |
| Equipment data | Some apps support particular connected devices; compatibility varies. | Measurements can be entered manually; automation depends on your setup. | Measurements are written by hand. |
These are format-level trade-offs, not results of a controlled speed or coffee-quality test.

When is a dedicated coffee journal app a good fit?
Choose an app if you want a repeatable logging workflow and expect to use search, filters, timers, history, or statistics. Features differ significantly, so check the specific app and device support rather than assuming every coffee journal does the same things.

Pay particular attention to where the data lives. Beanconqueror says its data is stored locally on the phone and warns users to make a full backup before uninstalling, because uninstalling without one can lose the records. Its FAQ also describes synchronization and login as substantial development and testing work. If you want to switch phones or use multiple devices, understand the backup and transfer process before relying on the app as your only archive.

Brew Logs
Brew Logs describes a mobile-first workflow with timers, history, ratings, filters, search, duplication, quick statistics, offline use after loading, local device storage, and export. Its page lists version 0.26.0 dated July 3, 2026, and version 0.25.2 dated June 27, 2026. Treat those as dated release information, not a guarantee about what a future version will include.
When does a spreadsheet make more sense?
A spreadsheet suits brewers who want control over their own fields, tabs, and calculations. One reader described separate tabs for brewing methods, coffee details, and ratings, with entries for coffee, dose, grind size, brew water, output, and tasting notes. That illustrates what a spreadsheet can accommodate, but the user must build and maintain its structure.

When is paper the better choice?
A notebook or recipe card works well if you like handwriting, want a flexible place for impressions, or would rather not handle a device while brewing. Readers describe writing down when and how a coffee was brewed, including grind size, method, technique, bean details, and tasting impressions. Another approach is to experiment in phone notes, then copy a successful recipe onto a card kept in a recipe book.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPaper makes freeform notes easy, but finding an old entry, comparing several brews, copying a recipe, or making a backup takes more manual effort. Those are format trade-offs, not evidence that paper records produce better or worse coffee.

How should you choose and protect your records?
- Pick the workflow you will keep using. Choose structured app fields, a self-designed spreadsheet, or handwritten notes according to how you prefer to record brews.
- Start with a small, repeatable set of details. Include the coffee, dose, grind setting, water, method, and tasting result; add other fields when you have a reason to compare them.
- Check review tools before committing. If you need search, filters, repeat-brew workflows, or statistics, verify that the particular app offers them. In a spreadsheet, plan how you will build those views; on paper, expect to browse manually.
- Check export, backup, and transfer. Find out whether entries are local or cloud-backed, whether you can export them, and what happens when you change or reset a phone. Do not assume that an app’s sync or backup works like another app’s.
- Add connected gear only for a specific need. If you want measurements recorded from a scale or extraction yield calculated from a refractometer, confirm support for the exact app and equipment first.
Do you need a Bluetooth scale or refractometer?
No. They are optional tools for particular measurement workflows, not prerequisites for keeping a useful brew journal. Beanconqueror describes integrations with selected scales and profiling devices, while BeanBench describes supported scale pairing for weight and flow data and a way to enter refractometer readings for extraction-yield calculations. Confirm model compatibility with the app before buying; support for one device does not imply support for every scale.
Is Brewfather a coffee journal app?
No. Brewfather’s documentation and its App Store listing describe beer recipe design and batch tracking, so it is not a direct coffee-brew journal alternative.
