In a typical setup, an encoder or webcam sends video to Castr, and Castr relays it to YouTube; if the source can no longer reach Castr, configuring YouTube as a destination does not create a replacement feed.
How Castr and YouTube connect
A Castr live-stream project receives an incoming source, commonly from an encoder over RTMP or RTMPS, and forwards it to destinations such as YouTube. YouTube is the destination, not the source. Castr’s setup instructions cover connecting YouTube and configuring the stream source: Castr’s YouTube connection guide and Castr’s live-stream setup guide.

If your home internet drops, the encoder cannot deliver its live feed over that connection. Castr therefore cannot relay that feed to YouTube. The same applies if the encoder loses its connection while the internet service remains available: Castr needs an incoming source to send onward.
What Castr’s backup options can—and cannot—do
Backup ingest helps with a source or encoder interruption
Castr’s backup ingest can switch from a primary stream to a backup stream, but it must already be configured with two separate encoders sending to the primary and backup ingest endpoints. Castr advises matching the encoder output settings and enabling adaptive bitrate transcoding for seamless switching. This can help if the primary encoder or source fails while the backup feed and its network path remain available. It is not a second internet connection: if both encoders depend on the same failed connection, neither can send Castr a feed. See Castr’s backup-ingest documentation.

A backup VOD is fallback content, not proof of uninterrupted YouTube continuity
Castr’s live-stream guide lists a backup VOD that can play if live input drops. That is fallback content, not evidence that a complete loss of the broadcaster’s internet will preserve an uninterrupted YouTube live broadcast or the same YouTube event. Castr’s documentation does not establish that guarantee.
Cloud recording and playback controls do not replace the source
Cloud Recording can retain a recording while a stream is live; it does not supply a replacement live source if the incoming feed disappears. Likewise, Castr’s Disable Playback feature concerns disabling Castr’s public player while recording continues and configured destinations still receive the stream. It does not mean the broadcaster’s internet can be disabled while the source feed continues. Details are in Castr’s Disable Playback guide.

Ways to reduce interruptions or plan for an outage
Make the active connection more reliable
Castr says stable internet is essential for smooth streaming. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate: its example is 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) of upload for a 5,000 Kbps stream. These are Castr’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will never fail. Castr also recommends wired Ethernet because Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. Guidance and troubleshooting options, including checking stream-health charts and considering a different ingest server or SRT for persistent instability, appear in Castr’s stream-quality troubleshooting guide. A wired link or additional upload headroom may reduce instability; neither bridges a total outage.
For a true network contingency, use an independent path
If you need a live encoder feed to remain available through a local internet outage, the backup must not depend on the same failed path. A separately available internet connection is a general network-contingency approach, not a feature Castr’s cited documentation guarantees. Test the complete arrangement before relying on it, including whether the backup encoder can reach Castr and what YouTube does if incoming feeds stop. Castr’s pre-broadcast testing guide covers testing a stream.

Use alerts to learn that a stream is down
Castr says its stream-down SMS alert can notify an operator about a stream down due to network issues, encoder problems, or other causes. Its help page lists Premium-or-higher eligibility, with named legacy-plan exceptions, and a maximum of 20 messages per month on eligible plans. These plan details may change, so check Castr’s SMS-alert instructions for current eligibility. An alert helps you respond; it does not restore the stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube rather than to preserve a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a different approach: it plays uploaded videos from the cloud, so your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos; it does not replace a live camera feed.
