You can run a spa ambience video continuously through OBS by adding it as a looping Media Source, connecting OBS to a live-streaming platform with its server details and stream key, and testing the output before leaving it unattended. The stream depends on the computer, power and internet connection staying available; OBS’s reconnect option is not a guarantee against every outage.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and have your video and any separate audio files available locally. OBS lists common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for supported formats and source options.
- Use footage and music that you own or have permission to stream. The file format does not establish that you have the necessary rights.
- Create or access the live stream on your chosen platform and retrieve its server information and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Check that your computer and internet connection can remain available for the intended duration. OBS can attempt to reconnect after some interruptions, but that does not cover every computer crash, power failure or extended network outage.
Choose how OBS will play the ambience

Both options are documented by OBS. A single Media Source is simpler when you want the same video to repeat; VLC Video is useful when you want multiple clips in a fixed or shuffled sequence.

Set up a single video to loop
- Open OBS and create a scene for the spa stream in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Spa video.”
- In the source properties, select the local video file. Enable Loop, then confirm the source.
- Check the OBS preview. Resize or crop the source only if needed to fill the canvas without unintentionally cutting off important parts of the image.
- Check the audio meters while the video plays. If the ambience audio is a separate file, add it as an audio source and confirm that it plays alongside the video without clipping or an unintended second audio track.
OBS documents the Media Source loop setting at obsproject.com/kb/media-sources. Watch a full playback cycle during testing if practical, so you can confirm that the file restarts cleanly rather than leaving a gap or stopping.

Set up a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- In your scene’s Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the ambience files in the order you want them to play. Use the source’s playlist controls to enable shuffle only if you want clips in a changing order.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list after its final file. Review the visibility behavior options if the source may be hidden and later shown in your scene.
- Play the playlist in the preview and check transitions, sound levels and the order of clips before streaming.

Connect OBS to the live stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose your streaming service if it is available in the service list. If you are configuring a custom service, enter the server URL provided by the platform.
- Copy the platform’s stream key into OBS. Use the key for the specific stream you intend to broadcast, and do not share it publicly.
- For YouTube, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live to reach Live Control Room, then create or select a stream and use the server URL and stream key shown there if OBS does not provide a direct YouTube selection. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the platform-side flow.
- Set your video and output options in OBS, then start the encoder output. Complete YouTube’s go-live step in Live Control Room if the interface prompts you to do so.
- Confirm that the platform is receiving the expected picture and sound and that its stream health indicator is healthy before leaving the stream running.

Choose video and audio encoding settings
There is no single bitrate that suits every stream. The settings must fit both the platform’s ingest guidance and your available upload capacity. YouTube’s current help page recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 figures are recommendations for YouTube ingestion, not universal OBS presets.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; the page’s publication date is not shown. If your upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate rather than assuming the platform’s recommended figure will work on your connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate that your source, computer and connection can support consistently.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Follow OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommendation to test before your first stream.
- Use representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the broadcast, then checking stream health in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the intended video or playlist continues after a clip ends, the ambience audio remains present, and the platform receives a stable picture and sound.
- Check the stream again after it has run for a while. A successful preview alone does not establish that an unattended stream will recover from every later failure.
YouTube’s 24/7 and archive behavior
YouTube says some encoders support continuous 24/7 streams. Its encoder guidance also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours will produce one complete archive; check YouTube’s current guidance for the behavior that applies to your stream. Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end. For a single file, open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For multiple files, check that the VLC Video source has Loop Playlist enabled.
- The playlist source is unavailable or will not play. Confirm VLC is installed, then reopen OBS and check the VLC Video source’s file list.
- YouTube is not receiving the stream. Check that OBS is using the correct service or server URL and the current stream key for the selected broadcast. If you replace or reset the key on the platform, update it in OBS too.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames. Compare your OBS bitrate with YouTube’s ingest guidance and the upload capacity available to the streaming computer. Lower the output demand if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again.
- There is no sound, or the sound is too loud. Check the source’s audio settings and OBS meters during playback. Confirm that the platform preview also receives the intended audio before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream drops and does not return. OBS has an automatic reconnect option, but it is not a guaranteed recovery plan for every failure. Verify the reconnect configuration in OBS, restore the computer or network if needed, and check Live Control Room before restarting the broadcast.
