HTMLCanvasElement.toBlob() expects a numeric quality value for lossy formats such as JPEG and WebP, but JavaScript’s Web IDL conversion can turn a numeric string such as "0.8" into a number. A nonnumeric string cannot supply a usable quality value. If the value is omitted or outside the permitted range, the browser uses its own default quality. The API does not promise one universal default. MDN’s API reference and the HTML Standard describe this behavior.
A check can appear to show that a string is ignored if it uses PNG, requests an unsupported format that falls back to PNG, compares file sizes without controlling the image, or fails to wait for and inspect the callback’s Blob. Without the original test code, browser version, and output, it is not possible to identify which issue caused a particular result.

What the quality argument does
The method takes a callback, an optional MIME type, and an optional quality value: canvas.toBlob(callback, type, quality). The callback receives the resulting Blob; toBlob() does not synchronously return that Blob. Quality is relevant to lossy encodings such as image/jpeg and image/webp. It does not control PNG encoding. MDN documents the parameters and format behavior.
The quality value is numeric in the API definition. A string containing a number, for example "0.8", may be converted to a number under Web IDL rules; it is inaccurate to say that all strings are ignored. A nonnumeric string does not provide a meaningful quality number. If quality is omitted or outside the accepted range, the browser uses its default encoder quality, which is not a single value guaranteed across user agents. The HTML Standard defines the API and its conversion context.

Why a first check can give the wrong impression
The export was PNG
PNG is lossless, so changing a lossy-quality setting is not a useful comparison. Request JPEG or WebP explicitly when checking quality behavior.
The browser returned a different format
If the requested output format is unsupported, the browser falls back to PNG. Check the returned Blob’s type, rather than assuming the requested format was produced. A PNG result cannot establish whether a JPEG or WebP quality argument was honored.

The check did not wait for the callback
Read the Blob inside the callback (or wrap the callback in a Promise and await it). Code that treats the method call itself as the Blob is checking the wrong value because toBlob() delivers its result asynchronously through the callback.
File size was treated as proof
Output size depends on the image content and encoder implementation as well as the quality setting. A size difference is an observation, not proof by itself that a particular argument was accepted; the API documentation does not guarantee a specific byte-size change for a given image and quality.

A controlled way to test the argument
Use a canvas with fine detail or gradients that make lossy compression visible, and compare the same canvas, format, and browser for each case. The following is a diagnostic procedure, not a report of measured results:
- Export JPEG with a numeric quality control, such as
0.2, and wait for the callback. - Repeat with the numeric string
"0.2", keeping all other inputs the same. - Repeat with a nonnumeric string to distinguish numeric conversion from an unusable value.
- For every callback, record
blob.typeand, if useful,blob.size. Compare visual output as well as size; do not infer format or quality from size alone. - Record the browser and version so a discrepancy can be tied to a specific implementation.
For example, compare canvas.toBlob(callback, "image/jpeg", 0.2) with canvas.toBlob(callback, "image/jpeg", "0.2"), then test a nonnumeric string separately. Ensure each comparison uses a supported format and examines the Blob delivered to the callback.

Browser and version matter
MDN describes toBlob() as widely available and links compatibility information for the method and quality parameter. Browser support and implementation details are versioned, so report the browser and version with any claimed discrepancy.
