Does Bing AI Show Ads? What Microsoft Says About Copilot Sponsored Results

Microsoft says Copilot has carried Search ads since 2023, but that does not mean every AI answer contains an ad. Here’s how Bing and Copilot placements differ.

Yes. Microsoft says Search ads have appeared on Copilot since its 2023 release, and the company describes sponsored placements in Copilot as distinct from its AI-generated organic responses. That does not mean every Copilot answer contains an ad, or that ads are secretly inserted into every response. Microsoft’s statements describe its policy and product design; they are not an independent audit of what every user sees.

What kinds of ads appear in Bing and Copilot?

“Bing AI” can mean two related but different experiences: ordinary Bing search results and the generative AI experience in Copilot. Microsoft describes advertising in both, but the placement is not necessarily the same.

Experience What the ad is What Microsoft says
Bing search Paid listings alongside organic search results. Microsoft’s August 2024 EU Digital Services Act assessment says Bing is monetized almost entirely through advertising. When relevant, it shows organic results and paid ads, which are labeled “Ads” and supplied by Microsoft Advertising. Read Microsoft’s Bing risk assessment.
Copilot Sponsored placements associated with the generative AI experience, including material that accompanies a conversation. Microsoft Advertising said in October 2024 that it had included Search ads on Copilot since Copilot’s 2023 release. In March 2025, Microsoft described sponsored placements as distinctly marked and said they appear when highly relevant and from trusted sources. Microsoft Advertising’s October 2024 account and March 2025 product description.

Are ads mixed into Copilot’s answers?

Microsoft’s stated approach is that sponsored content does not influence Copilot’s organic responses. In March 2025, Microsoft Advertising said the responses are “never influenced by sponsored content,” and that sponsored material is distinctly marked. This is Microsoft’s description of its policy and design, not an independently verified finding about every live response or placement.

So the careful distinction is: Copilot can show advertising as part of the experience, but the available statements do not establish that an ad is covertly woven into every generated answer. They also do not establish how often a particular user will encounter an ad.

What ad formats did Microsoft describe?

Sponsored placements accompanying a conversation

Microsoft’s March 2025 description discusses sponsored material presented alongside a Copilot conversation. The company says placements should be relevant and clearly marked, rather than influencing the organic response.

Showroom ads and Dynamic filters

Microsoft also announced interactive product-oriented formats: Showroom ads for exploring sponsored products, and Dynamic filters for narrowing product options. The March 2025 announcement said Showroom ads would begin a pilot in April and Dynamic filters would begin piloting in English-language markets that March. Those were rollout plans announced at that time, not confirmation of current availability in a particular country, language, or account.

Why am I seeing this ad?

Microsoft Support says Bing ads generally may be based on current or recent searches, sites visited, Microsoft account details, information provided by advertisers, or LinkedIn profile information. Those are possible signals for Bing advertising overall; the support page does not say that every signal is used for every Copilot ad. See Microsoft Support’s explanation of why an ad may appear.

How widespread are Copilot ads?

Microsoft said in March 2025 that Copilot ads had fully ramped in English-, French-, and German-speaking markets. That is a dated company rollout statement, not a guarantee of current availability everywhere those languages are used. The sources cited here do not provide a current worldwide market-by-market availability list, a statistic for how often a user sees an ad, or the share of Copilot answers that contain one.

Microsoft also reported that ad relevance metrics in Copilot were 25% better than in traditional search, attributing the comparison to its internal data. That is a company-reported result, not an independently verified benchmark, and it does not measure how frequently ads appear. Microsoft’s March 2025 announcement provides the company’s account.

What can users conclude?

  • Ads are part of Microsoft’s Bing and Copilot business model; Microsoft says Copilot Search ads have existed since its 2023 release.
  • Bing search ads are paid listings labeled “Ads.” Copilot advertising can take forms associated with a conversation, including product-oriented interactive formats described by Microsoft.
  • Microsoft says sponsored content does not influence Copilot’s organic responses, but that policy statement is not an independent audit of individual results.
  • No frequency figure or evidence in the cited sources establishes that every AI answer contains an ad or that ad placements have increased over time.
