But the claim that it “puts Google Keep, OneNote, and Obsidian to shame” is an opinion, not a result established by a controlled comparison. The developer’s August 2026 article showed Arcanum 1.0.0 and said it was in closed testing for Play Store distribution at the time; that does not establish its current availability.
What is Arcanum?
Arcanum is the note-taking project described by its developer, aoto, in an article published in August 2026. The version shown there was Arcanum 1.0.0. The developer said the app was in closed testing for Play Store distribution when that article appeared, so its present release status cannot be confirmed from that account. A flat list for quick capture
The developer says Arcanum is intended to make smartphone note-taking quick and intuitive, without requiring a folder, tag, or hierarchy system. Instead, notes appear in a flat list, with pinning, reordering, and search as ways to keep them manageable. The app also includes a lock feature. These are the developer’s descriptions, not independently verified hands-on findings.

YouTube links that open in the official player
For a YouTube link shared into a note, the developer says Arcanum retains the video ID and calls the official player when the video is played. It does not store the video file itself. That makes this a link-embedding feature, not offline video storage.
Password-protected encrypted export
The developer also describes an encrypted, password-protected export intended for sensitive information, such as app recovery passcodes. The published description does not establish the encryption design, how recovery works if a password is lost, or the threat model the feature is meant to address. Treat the feature description as a starting point, not a complete security assessment.

Does it actually beat Keep, OneNote, and Obsidian?
There is not enough evidence to say that it does. The developer explains personal design preferences rather than reporting a controlled, feature-by-feature comparison of the four apps. No comparative testing is established for speed, security, reliability, or overall usefulness, and the available account does not provide a sourced OneNote comparison.

The developer’s own framing is revealing: “I wanted a note app that took Keep’s functionality and sharpened it to my own liking.” That describes a personal product goal. A design that suits aoto may suit readers who want a lean capture tool, but it does not prove a general advantage over established alternatives.

What official comparison points are available?
The limited official documentation gives context on data handling, but it is not a complete comparison of the apps:
- Google Keep: Google says files uploaded to Keep are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that it does not use content in personal-content apps such as Keep for advertising. That context does not prove Keep is insecure; it helps readers distinguish a concern about cloud reliance from a demonstrated security flaw. Google Keep privacy and data handling.
- Obsidian on Android: Obsidian’s official documentation says a vault stored in device storage can be accessed by other apps and services, including third-party sync tools, and remains on the device if Obsidian is uninstalled. - OneNote: The evidence cited here does not establish a comparable feature or security assessment for OneNote.
How to decide whether Arcanum is worth trying
First confirm whether the note-taking Arcanum—not another app with the same name—is currently available to you. If it is, judge it against your own workflow rather than the headline’s boast. Consider these questions:

- Locking and export: Does the described lock suit your needs, and can you verify how export encryption and password recovery work before storing sensitive material?
- Data handling: Where are notes stored, and what access do the app, cloud services, and other apps have? The developer’s feature description alone does not answer those questions.
- Sync and device access: Do you need notes available across devices, and what sync method is supported? The cited account does not establish Arcanum’s sync options.
- Availability: Check the current Play Store listing or an official developer channel; a closed-testing status reported in August 2026 may have changed.
