Apple TV+—now branded simply as Apple TV on Apple’s U.S. pages—is a subscription to Apple Originals, not a pass to every movie shown in the Apple TV app. The app also lists movies available to rent or buy, as well as content from other services. Check a movie’s listing to see how you can watch it.
Apple TV subscription vs. the Apple TV app
Apple uses similar names for three different things. Keeping them separate makes it easier to tell what a subscription covers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Apple TV subscription: A paid subscription for Apple Originals, available in the Apple TV app and at tv.apple.com. Apple’s current U.S. pages call the subscription Apple TV; many viewers still know it as Apple TV+.
- Apple TV app: The app is a place to discover and watch content. It also offers movies to rent or buy and access to eligible content previously purchased from iTunes. A title appearing in the app does not mean it is part of the subscription.
- Apple TV 4K: This is optional streaming hardware, not the subscription or the app.
Which movies are included?
The subscription includes Apple Originals. It does not include movies listed for rental or purchase in the app, or third-party subscription services. Apple states: “Apple TV subscription does not include third-party subscription services, or content available for rental or purchase on the Apple TV app.” (Apple’s U.S. subscription page.)
For a specific movie, open its listing in the app and check the access option shown there. A movie may be included with the subscription, offered for rent, offered for purchase, or associated with another service. Availability can vary by title and change over time; the app’s listing is the practical check before you press play or pay.

Is Apple TV+ free?
Not as ongoing access for everyone. As of October 4, 2026, Apple’s U.S. product page lists a free seven-day trial followed by a subscription at $14.99 per month. Apple also identifies Apple One and the Apple Music Student Plan as routes that include Apple TV access. Prices, trial eligibility, and bundle terms can change, so check Apple’s current U.S. offer for the terms that apply to you.
A free trial is temporary access to the subscription, not permanent free viewing of every movie in the app. Likewise, access through a bundle does not turn rental or purchase titles into subscription titles.
