One Android Auto community user reported better sound after changing a developer setting on a specific wireless setup, but did not name a fixing app or provide a controlled comparison. If your music sounds worse in Android Auto, compare playback paths and isolate the cause before changing settings or switching apps.
What the reported fix actually shows
A Google Android Auto community post titled “Bad audio quality on Wireless Android Auto (e.g. Aphqua head units) – Fixed” describes Spotify running on a Samsung S23+ connected wirelessly to an Aphqua A97 SmartScreen head unit. The user said sound improved after setting Android Auto to prefer PCM, and cautioned that the option might not appear in every version. This is one person’s report—not proof that Android Auto caused the problem, that PCM will fix other systems, or that a particular app was responsible. Read the community report.

Google says Android Auto can play media through a car’s speakers using compatible apps, and directs users with app-specific problems to the app developer. Spotify likewise says playback quality depends on settings, device support, connection type and network conditions. Those factors make the audio path worth checking; they do not support a general claim that Android Auto degrades sound. Google’s Android Auto help; Spotify’s audio-quality guidance.

- Set up a fair comparison. While parked, play the same track in the same app and car, then compare Android Auto with an alternative your phone and car support: Bluetooth, USB/AUX, or Spotify Connect. Keep the volume and listening conditions as similar as possible. Spotify lists these as in-car listening paths. Spotify in the car.
- Change one variable at a time. Note whether the issue is reduced fidelity, low volume, distortion or stuttering; they are different symptoms. Compare wired versus wireless if possible, and check whether the issue follows the connection, app, phone or head unit.
- Check the source and quality setting. Confirm the track and app settings, and test downloaded playback if available. Spotify says its app adjusts quality by default to help avoid stuttering, while higher quality uses more data. A setting’s advertised quality does not by itself tell you what a particular car connection delivers. Spotify’s audio-quality guidance.
- Check the connection itself. If the problem is stuttering or interruptions, look for an unstable network. Spotify recommends updating the app and device software, restarting the app and car, and checking or replacing a damaged AUX/USB cable when that cable connection is failing. These are general connection checks, not evidence that a cable fixes Android Auto audio quality. Spotify in the car.
What Spotify’s quality labels mean—and don’t mean
Spotify’s published specifications distinguish the service’s available quality settings, not the quality measured at your car speakers. Its support table lists Premium Lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and Very high as approximately 320 kbit/s. Spotify says lossless is a Premium feature, but connection type, device support and network conditions affect what is available. Its lossless guidance recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for lossless playback generally; that is not a measured Android Auto requirement. For Bluetooth comparisons, the codec is another variable: Android’s A2DP documentation says codec negotiation selects the best codec supported by both the phone and receiving device, and implementation depends on the hardware and software involved. A Bluetooth result therefore cannot be assumed to represent the same audio path as Android Auto. Android Open Source Project: Bluetooth services.
When to try the PCM developer setting
If the loss is specific to wireless Android Auto, trying the reported PCM preference is a reasonable, reversible experiment only if the setting is present in your Android Auto build. The community account does not establish a universal menu path or a guaranteed result, and this is not presented as official Google troubleshooting guidance. Record the original setting, test the same track and conditions, and revert if sound worsens. See the user’s report.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Why there is no verified “only app” here
The community post identifies Spotify as the playback app but does not identify a separate app that fixed the sound. It also lacks a controlled before-and-after comparison. The evidence therefore supports neither an exclusive app recommendation nor the claim that Android Auto itself caused the degradation. A useful diagnosis needs the exact phone, head unit, Android Auto version, app, connection mode and a comparison that changes only one factor at a time.
