A GPU power-connector monitor can show current and temperature readings and alert you to some abnormal conditions, but it cannot guarantee a safe connection or prevent every failure. The title’s $140 is an unverified purchase-price claim: the documented example here is Thermal Grizzly’s WireView Pro II, and the available information does not establish that it was the device bought or that it currently costs that amount.
What a GPU power-cable monitor can—and cannot—tell you
An inline monitor adds visibility into electrical and thermal conditions at the GPU’s 12V-2×6 connection. That can help you notice a concerning reading or an imbalance that deserves inspection. It is not a substitute for a correctly seated, undamaged connector, and a reading alone cannot certify that a connection is safe.

Thermal Grizzly’s WireView Pro II datasheet says it continuously measures current, voltage, temperature and power. It specifies per-pin and per-wire current measurement, temperature monitoring at both the input and output connectors, two included external 10k NTC temperature sensors, a display, visual and audible threshold warnings, and optional automatic system shutdown using the included splitter cable. Thermal Grizzly specifies a measurement tolerance of ±4%; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result. See the WireView Pro II datasheet.

Current and temperature need to be interpreted together. ASUS’s explanation of the 12V-2×6 connector says that a current imbalance by itself does not establish overheating; thermal context matters. - Compatibility Warning: This male-to-male 8-pin PSU to 6+2-pin PCIe/GPU cable is compatible with Corsair Type 3, Type 4, and select other PSUs with matching pinouts. It’s NOT compatible with EVGA PSU, Corsair RM850X Shift series, or other PSUs with different pinouts. Modular 8-pin layouts vary by brand/series—physical fit ≠ electrical match. Always verify your PSU’s 8-pin connector shape and pinout diagram before purchase. Using an incompatible cable may cause power failure or hardware damage
- Reliable Power Solution: Connect an 8-pin (EPS/ATX) male PSU connector directly to a 6-pin or 8-pin PCIe/GPU slot on your motherboard or graphics card. The cable effectively converts EPS power to PCIe power for secure and efficient delivery. Ideal for setups requiring additional power-routing flexibility while preventing power-related system issues. Note: Pin 4 on the PSU side is intentionally unused, and Pin 5 on the GPU side is double-wired to ensure stable 12V output.
- Graphics Card Compatibility: Perfect for powering high-performance graphics cards, this cable features a 6+2 pin PCIe connector that can be used with both 8 pin and 6 pin GPU interfaces, making it a versatile solution for varying power requirements.
- Easy Installation: With a 2ft length, this cable offers ample reach to accommodate different system configurations without creating excess clutter. Its plug-and-play design ensures a hassle-free setup, helping you get your system up and running in no time.
- Robust Construction: Crafted with a braided cable sleeve and heat-shrink tubing, this power extension/conversion cord offers superior durability and protection. The robust build ensures a secure and stable connection that withstands wear and thermal stress, making it ideal for high-performance computing environments.
WireView Pro II: fit and warranty considerations
WireView Pro II is an inline device, so it sits in the GPU power connection rather than monitoring it remotely. Thermal Grizzly lists Normal and Reverse orientations; the appropriate version depends on the graphics card’s sensor- and power-pin arrangement. Check the manual, card layout, cable path and available clearance before buying. The product may not suit every card or case, and the title alone does not identify the writer’s hardware.
Thermal Grizzly’s datasheet states a two-year extended warranty covering the GPU connector, conditional on proper use, following the manual and staying within the GPU manufacturer’s operating parameters. That is a manufacturer warranty with stated conditions, not unconditional insurance against damage. Read the manufacturer’s datasheet and terms.

How the alternatives differ
| Option | What it does | Compatibility and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro II | Inline per-pin current and connector-temperature monitoring; display, threshold alarms and optional shutdown. | Requires physical space and the correct Normal or Reverse orientation for the card. See Thermal Grizzly’s datasheet. |
| ASUS GPU Tweak III Power Detector+ | GPU-supported per-pin monitoring and warnings; ASUS documents automatic shutdown in GPU Tweak III v2.1.8.0 and later for supported hardware. | Requires a compatible ASUS GPU with Power Detector+ hardware; it is not a universal NVIDIA or AMD feature. ASUS lists supported ROG Astral and ROG Matrix cards. See ASUS GPU Tweak III documentation and ASUS’s product announcement. |
| ASUS ROG Equalizer cable | A cable option, not a monitoring device. ASUS claims capacity of 17 A per wire. | Use only with a PSU and system for which the cable is compatible; modular PSU cables are not universally interchangeable. ASUS’s figures and test descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative results. See ASUS’s explanation of ROG Equalizer and its PSU bundle announcement. |
| Installation checks | Confirm full seating, sensible cable routing and an undamaged plug and socket. | Necessary whether or not you use a monitor. ASUS says 12V-2×6 uses longer power pins and shorter sense pins than 12VHPWR to reduce the chance of partial connections, while still advising careful installation. See ASUS’s warning guidance and its cable explanation. |
For ASUS Power Detector+, ASUS’s USA support page says a red warning can appear when a monitored pin reads 0 A or exceeds 9.2 A. ASUS describes that as a feature-specific warning threshold, not a universal safe-current limit for all GPUs or monitors. Its Australia documentation says automatic shutdown in GPU Tweak III v2.1.8.0 and later applies when one pin remains above 12.5 A for a configured duration; the timing can be adjusted. Both functions require supported hardware. Check the current ASUS documentation for your card and software version before relying on either threshold. ASUS USA warning instructions; ASUS Australia feature documentation.
What to do if the connector feels hot or triggers a warning
A warm feeling is not a precise temperature measurement, but an unusually hot connector, visible damage or a warning should not be dismissed. ASUS’s support instructions for a Power Detector+ red warning say to shut down and unplug the PC before inspecting the connection.

- Compatible with Corsair Type 3 & Type 4 PSU ONLY Designed for Corsair Type 3 and Type 4 modular power supplies with matching PCIe pinout. Not compatible with Corsair Type 5, EVGA, or other PSU brands. Please verify your PSU model before purchase.
- 8 Pin PSU to 6+2 Pin GPU Connection Connects the modular PSU 8-pin PCIe port to graphics cards with 6-pin or 8-pin connectors. Ideal as a replacement or backup GPU power cable.
- Stable Power Delivery with 18AWG Wire Built with 18AWG wire construction for reliable conductivity and stable power connection during gaming, workstation, and custom PC builds.
- Flexible 25.5 Inch Cable Routing The flexible cable length allows easier routing inside PC cases and helps create a cleaner internal layout.
- Verify Pinout Before Installation This modular PSU cable is not universal. Always compare your original cable connector and PSU pin layout before installation to ensure proper compatibility.
- Shut down and unplug the PC. Do this before inspecting a warning-triggering connection, as ASUS directs.
- Check the plug and cable. Look for bending, deformation, overheating or other abnormalities. Replace a cable that is visibly affected rather than continuing to use it.
- Check seating and the GPU socket. ASUS says, “Ensure the connector is fully seated.” Look for a visible gap and inspect the socket and pins for damage.
- Confirm PSU suitability. Check the GPU maker’s recommended PSU wattage and verify that the cable is the correct one for that PSU. Do not assume a modular cable from another PSU is interchangeable.
- Route the cable without stressing the plug. Avoid tight bends at the connector and avoid repeated unplugging and replugging. Monitoring cannot compensate for a poor connection.
These steps follow ASUS’s instructions for its Power Detector+ warning; the cited thresholds and warning behavior do not apply to every graphics card or monitoring product. ASUS USA’s red-warning inspection guidance.
Does the newer 12V-2×6 connector remove the risk?
No connector revision or accessory should be treated as eliminating every failure mode. ASUS says 12V-2×6 changes the relative lengths of power and sense pins to reduce the chance of a partial connection, but still emphasizes full seating and careful cable routing. An inline monitor adds observations; it does not repair a damaged plug, make an incompatible cable safe or guarantee that damage will be prevented.
