Results depend on the game, the kind of loading being measured, the external drive and USB connection, and the internal drive used for comparison. A portable SSD is easiest to justify for extra library space or portability; expect faster loading only if a test close to your own setup shows it.
What the comparisons show
In an August 12, 2025 comparison, TechSpot tested PCIe 5.0, PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 3.0 M.2 drives, two SATA SSDs, a USB portable SSD and two hard drives. The test PC used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and a GeForce RTX 5090; its M.2 drives were installed in the CPU-connected primary slot. The USB drive was a T-Force M200 Portable SSD with a rated USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 20 Gbps interface. These results describe that equipment and the selected games, not every external SSD or USB port. Some game loads barely changed between SSDs
For Cyberpunk 2077 save reloads, TechSpot found no noticeable difference among the tested SSDs, including SATA and USB models. The hard drives were up to 3.8 times slower than the SSDs in that test. In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, fast travel took under five seconds on the tested PCIe SSDs, with minimal differences between models; TechSpot also described USB storage as fine for that game.

Storage affected some titles more than others, particularly where asset streaming mattered. The same comparison found that game-file verification did not follow the same pattern as in-game loading: PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 3.0 differed by 4% in TechSpot’s Stalker 2 verification test, while SATA took at least 38% longer than the PCIe drives. In its F1 25 verification test, involving 36,000 files, the tested DRAM-equipped PCIe models were 8–11% faster than the tested models without DRAM. These are results from specific tests, not predictions for another drive or library.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Faster interface specifications do not guarantee shorter loads
TechSpot found PCIe 5.0 often provided little or no gaming advantage over PCIe 3.0 in its tests, with the few advantages generally small. That is a reminder that a drive’s advertised interface speed alone does not determine game loading: the game’s workload and other parts of the system can matter too. The 20 Gbps figure for the tested T-Force M200 is its rated interface, not a measured improvement in game load time.
Compare against your own internal drive
“External SSD versus SSD” is not a useful comparison unless you know what the internal drive is. Replacing a hard drive with an SSD may produce a very different result from moving a game between two SSDs. For a meaningful comparison, look for the same game and load scenario—such as launching, loading a save, fast travel or streaming assets—and note the internal baseline, external drive or enclosure, and actual USB connection.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Check the host port: A drive’s interface rating does not establish the speed of the port it is plugged into. The cited USB result used a 20 Gbps drive interface, so it should not be generalized to every computer connection.
- Separate playing from file work: Installing, moving and verifying game files are different workloads from loading into a game. TechSpot’s Stalker 2 and F1 25 verification results illustrate why a transfer or verification result should not be presented as a game-load result.
- Look for sustained performance when moving large games: Interface, NAND type and cache can affect large writes and transfers; a peak interface figure by itself does not establish how quickly a long operation will finish.
When an external SSD makes sense for Steam
A portable external SSD can be a practical place to keep or run a Steam library when you need extra capacity or want to move games between compatible computers. UL’s Steam listing says its 3DMark Storage Benchmark tests activities including loading games, saving progress, installing game files and recording gameplay, and that the benchmark works with internal and external drives. Its DirectStorage feature test is described as a near-best-case scenario, not a substitute for measuring a full game’s loading path. UL’s 3DMark Steam listing.

For ordinary gaming, the evidence does not support buying an external SSD on the assumption that it will beat an internal SSD on load times. Treat extra capacity and portability as the clearer benefits; treat a speed advantage as game- and setup-specific.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
If Steam does not see the external library
A recognition problem may be about when the drive is mounted, rather than its performance. Seagate’s support guidance says a launcher may fail to recognize a secondary library if it starts before the drive is connected and mounted. Seagate’s external game-drive support article advises connecting the drive, confirming its usual drive letter, and then restarting the launcher.
