A prompt says what you want now; training history helps show what you have actually been doing. Both can matter, and there is no running-specific head-to-head evidence here showing that history beats prompt wording.
Why training history can change the advice
A single prompt may tell a coach that you want to run a faster 10K. A training record can add the context needed to make that goal more specific: how often you run, what recent easy and hard sessions looked like, whether you have missed workouts, and how your completed sessions went.

That distinction is useful because a stated target and a recent training pattern are not the same thing. A coach with longitudinal context can, in principle, adjust its suggestions to the pattern rather than treating each request as a fresh start. Runna says its plan-building approach considers ability, running frequency, preferences, interruptions, and completed workouts, and that it may suggest pace-target changes based on completed sessions. It describes suggested distances and paces as coming from a coach-built, rules-based system—not as AI-generated plans. Runna’s explanation of how it builds plans is a vendor description, not an independent assessment of results.
What “adaptive coaching” means—and what the evidence shows
For a plan to adapt, it must do more than store workouts. It needs to use relevant information to change later guidance: for example, adjusting a target after completed sessions or responding to an interruption. An activity log is therefore an input, not proof that a plan has changed.

- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance

A 2020 paper by Shiwali Mohan, Anusha Venkatakrishnan, and Andrea Hartzler describes an adaptive health coach that retained past interactions and exercise performance in long-term memory to inform future weekly exercise goals. The study was a six-week observational study involving 21 sedentary participants and focused on walking—not running. It helps explain how a coach might use history, but it does not establish running performance gains or show that history is more useful than prompt quality. Read the study.
There is also no basis here for saying that AI running plans prevent injury. Runna’s Head Coach, Steph Kessell, said in the company’s July 29, 2026 announcement that recovery is built into every plan to help prevent training plateaus and reduce burnout or injury risk. That is a company statement about its approach, not independent clinical evidence that a plan prevents injury. Runna’s announcement.

What different services say they adjust
Product descriptions are useful for understanding intended behavior, but they are not an independent comparison of coaching quality or outcomes.
| Service or setup | What its source says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Runna | Its support material says plan progression considers ability, running frequency, preferences, interruptions, and completed workouts; suggested distances and paces come from a coach-built, rules-based system. Source | Whether the activities you add are actually used to adjust the plan. A manually logged race does not always automatically adjust the rest of the plan, replace a long run, or change mileage progression. Activity logging guidance |
| Garmin Run Coach | Garmin says it adjusts workouts and rest days, responds to missed workouts, and considers other sports such as cycling or tennis. Source | Confirm whether the features described apply to your device and setup. The product page does not independently validate outcomes or establish eligibility for every device. |
| Strava + Runna | Strava presents a combined subscription context for activity tracking and personalized Runna plans. Source | Check current subscription terms, regional availability, and how activity history connects to plan adjustments. |
How to give a coach more useful context
If your coach can accept written context, or its activity record is incomplete, summarize the information that can affect the plan. Keep it factual and time-bounded rather than offering a broad label such as “I’m fit.” These details are a practical synthesis of the factors named in the product documentation, not a validated universal intake checklist.

- Recent training: approximate weekly volume and number of running days over a stated period.
- Representative sessions: a recent easy run and harder workout, with distance, duration, and how each felt.
- Goal and timing: the event or target you are training for and its date.
- Changes in routine: breaks, missed sessions, or a recent return to running.
- Other exercise and constraints: cross-training and the days or time you can realistically train.
For example: “Over the past four weeks I ran three days a week, usually 20–25 km total. My easy runs felt comfortable; I missed the last two weeks because of travel. I’m preparing for a 10K on [date] and can train on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.” If you use a variable such as a date in a template, replace it with your actual information before sharing.
When your activity record is incomplete
Correct missing or inaccurate activities where the service allows it, then check whether those entries affect the plan. Runna documents options to manually add activities and link completed sessions to planned workouts, but its help page also explains that a manually logged race will not always trigger broader plan changes. See its activity logging instructions.

That distinction matters: recording a workout, matching it to a planned session, and adapting future training are separate behaviors. Do not assume an imported or manually entered activity changed your next workouts; look for an explicit plan update or adjustment.
