Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for the base PS5 on October 1, 2026, giving buyers an AI-upscaling option in two initially named games: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. PS5 Pro still offers Sony’s higher-end PSSR upscaling, alongside other game-dependent graphics and performance enhancements. Your best choice depends on the games and display you use, and the local price difference between matching console configurations.
What changed: base PS5 now has QSSR
QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling technology for the base PS5. Sony describes it as a streamlined neural-network implementation intended to improve detail and image stability while maximizing performance on the console. In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR, each as an additional graphics option.

Sony says it plans to make QSSR broadly available to developers. That is an invitation to adopt the technology, not a guarantee that every game—or any particular future release—will include it. Check the graphics options for the games you play rather than assuming QSSR support.

How QSSR compares with PS5 Pro’s PSSR
PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Sony says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and describes it as the company’s gold-standard implementation. On February 27, 2026, PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles to that point; he also announced a more advanced version first used in Resident Evil Requiem. See Sony’s PSSR update.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Those descriptions establish that both consoles have an AI-upscaling option, but they do not quantify a universal image-quality difference between QSSR and PSSR. Sony and developers describe their own implementations; the available official accounts are not independent, controlled comparisons. The practical question is how each supported game looks and runs in its specific modes.
What the Pro adds beyond upscaling
PS5 Pro’s appeal is not limited to PSSR. Sony says its enhanced-title catalog includes more than 100 PS5 games, and that compatible titles can combine 60 fps or up to 120 fps, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced 4K output. These are capabilities across compatible games, not a promise that every title delivers every feature at once. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page lists the enhanced titles and describes the system’s features.
Individual game examples show why it is better to compare modes than consoles in the abstract.

Saros: resolution and image quality
In an April 16, 2026 account, developer Housemarque said Saros runs at 60 fps on base PS5. On PS5 Pro, the studio increased the base render resolution before upscaling, uses dynamic resolution to target 60 fps during play, and adjusted reflections and overall quality. Housemarque also described the Pro image as sharper in scene-to-scene comparisons. These are the developer’s claims about Saros, not a benchmark for other games. Details are in the Housemarque explanation.

Cyberpunk 2077: frame rate, ray tracing, and display conditions
CD Projekt Red’s April 7, 2026 update describes three PS5 Pro modes for Cyberpunk 2077, including PSSR and ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections:
| Mode | Developer’s stated behavior |
|---|---|
| Ray Tracing Pro | Targets 40 fps on a high-frame-rate display with VRR, or 30 fps otherwise. |
| Performance | Reaches up to 90 fps on a VRR display. |
| Ray Tracing | Targets 60 fps. |
These are mode descriptions for this game, not guaranteed results for other titles. The 40 fps and up-to-90 fps figures depend on the display conditions stated by the developer. See the Cyberpunk 2077 update.

QSSR makes the base console more attractive for compatible games, but its initial support is limited to the games Sony named.
