Yes, it can pass generic VAST XSD validation. The VAST 4.x schema allows arbitrary child elements inside <Extension> and skips validation of those children. But that does not make type="pos" paired with <plcmt> conform to IAB Tech Lab’s CTV signaling pattern: pos and plcmt are distinct signals. Align the extension type and child with the signal you intend to send, and validate both the XML and the CTV signaling contract.
Why the mismatch can pass VAST validation
The IAB-maintained VAST 4.x XSD permits zero or more child elements inside an <Extension>. It uses an XML Schema wildcard with processContents="skip", and the type attribute is an optional string. Consequently, the generic schema does not check whether an extension’s child name matches its type value.

A document containing <Extension type="pos"><plcmt>...</plcmt></Extension> may therefore be structurally valid under that schema, provided the rest of the VAST document also satisfies its requirements. This is not a blanket guarantee that every document containing this fragment validates, nor does XSD acceptance verify the meaning of the extension payload.

plcmtidentifies the placement subtype or format.posdescribes placement position or on-screen treatment.playbackmethoddescribes how the ad is initiated.
They are not interchangeable labels. In the documented pattern, a pos extension carries a pos child, while a plcmt extension carries a plcmt child. Thus type="pos" with a <plcmt> child is a semantic mismatch against that pattern, even where a generic XSD validator accepts it.
Why downstream stitchers need the signals
The guidance describes VAST as a way to carry pos and attr downstream so publishers, stitchers, and measurement vendors can validate the creative experience without access to the original bid-response payload. In its words: “VAST are used to round-trip pos and attr so that publishers, stitchers, and measurement vendors can validate the creative experience independently of the bid response payload.”

The guidance applies to both client-side rendering and server-side stitcher implementations. That establishes the intended signaling contract, not identical behavior across every deployed stitcher. The sources do not establish that any particular stitcher will reject, ignore, or reinterpret this mismatched extension; compatibility depends on the implementation.

- Check XML well-formedness. Confirm that the document is valid XML, with properly nested and closed elements.
- Run VAST XSD validation. Use the applicable VAST schema to check the overall document structure. A successful result does not verify the extension’s CTV meaning.
- Match the signal name to its payload. For a
possignal, use aposchild; for aplcmtsignal, use aplcmtchild, following the guidance’s documented pattern. - Check the CTV signaling requirements. Validate the relevant values and combinations against the final IAB guidance, rather than treating generic XSD success as proof of signaling conformance.
- Verify the actual delivery path. Test with the specific client-side player or server-side stitcher intended to consume the VAST. Do not infer its behavior from schema acceptance alone.
This separates two questions that are often conflated: whether the XML fits the generic VAST schema, and whether the payload communicates the intended CTV signal to its downstream consumer.

Scope and version context
This distinction concerns the generic VAST 4.x schema and the separate CTV signaling guidance finalized by IAB Tech Lab in July 2026. IAB identifies VAST 4.3 as released in December 2022; the newer signaling guidance should not be treated as a contract automatically enforced by every VAST version or implementation.
The 2026 guidance covers six CTV formats: Pause, Menu/Home Screen, Overlay, Screensaver, In Scene, and Squeezebacks. Five use the OpenRTB Video object with non-linear VAST delivery; Menu uses a Native API path. The format scope provides context for the guidance, but it does not change the generic XSD’s wildcard behavior.
