It depends on where the PS5 Pro was originally sold and whether it was sold used by Sony or a third party. In the US, Sony says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty. In Japan, Sony’s terms explicitly include PS5 Pro and provide one year of coverage from the new purchase date, with purchase evidence required. Because Sony’s rules vary by market, confirm the original sale country and check with PlayStation Support before relying on any remaining coverage.
How Sony’s used-console guidance differs by country
Sony publishes market-specific warranty and buying guidance, so a used PS5 Pro does not have one universal warranty answer. The applicable terms may depend on the original sale country, not just where you now live or plan to request service.

| Market | Sony’s published guidance | What it means for a used PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Sony says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty; Sony-certified refurbished products include warranty. Sony US used-product guide. | A privately resold or third-party used console should not be assumed to have Sony warranty coverage. Certified refurbished status is distinct from an ordinary used listing. |
| Japan | Sony’s after-service terms name PS5 and PS5 Pro, state a one-year warranty from the new purchase date, and require a purchase certificate showing the date, store, and product name. Sony Japan after-service terms. | The terms establish a one-year period for a new purchase, but do not by themselves confirm that a private resale transfers any remaining coverage to a later owner. |
| United Kingdom | Sony says third-party used products may not be covered, certified refurbished products include warranty, and statutory rights are unaffected. Sony UK used-product guide. | Sony’s wording is “may not be covered,” rather than the US guide’s categorical statement. UK consumer rights and seller obligations are separate from Sony’s commercial warranty. |
Does Sony’s warranty transfer when you buy a used PS5 Pro?
Do not treat a seller’s claim that “the warranty follows the console” as confirmation. Sony’s US hardware warranty describes coverage for the original purchaser, is valid only in the US and Canada, and requires proof of the original purchase date. Its terms state: “A VALID PROOF OF PURCHASE IN THE FORM OF A BILL OF SALE OR RECEIPT FROM A RETAILER WITH THE DATE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE MUST BE PRESENTED TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE.” Read the Sony US PS5 hardware warranty for the applicable terms.

The US and Japan sources establish their respective conditions and documentation requirements; they do not establish that a private resale transfers the remaining manufacturer warranty. Ask the PlayStation Support team for the country where the console was originally sold whether that specific unit and its documentation qualify. A serial-number-based eligibility lookup was not confirmed in Sony’s published guidance cited here.

What proof do you need for a warranty claim?
Keep the original retailer receipt or invoice, not just the resale receipt. Sony’s US terms require proof showing the original purchase date. Sony Japan’s terms call for a purchase certificate listing the purchase date, store, and product name. A new owner may not have the document Sony requires, so verify that it is available before paying.
Sony’s US terms also say registration does not change the warranty. Registering a console should not be treated as a way to create coverage or extend its term.

What to check before buying a used PS5 Pro
- Identify the original sale country. Ask where the console was first purchased; warranty terms and service scope vary by market.
- Get the original purchase date and proof. Request a clear copy of the original retailer receipt or invoice and check that it identifies the purchase date. For a Japanese purchase, Sony specifies evidence showing date, store, and product name.
- Confirm the product’s sales status. Distinguish an ordinary private or third-party used console from one sold as Sony-certified refurbished. Sony’s US and UK buying guides say certified refurbished products include warranty, while their wording for third-party used products differs.
- Contact the relevant local PlayStation Support team. Give them the original sale country, purchase date, and available documentation, and ask whether the particular console qualifies for service.
- Check the seller’s return protection separately. Sony’s warranty guidance does not establish the return terms or condition of any particular marketplace listing. Do not confuse a seller’s guarantee with Sony coverage.
Manufacturer warranty is not the same as consumer rights
A manufacturer’s commercial warranty and legal protections against a seller are different. Sony’s UK used-product guide says statutory rights are unaffected. Its UK legal-guarantee page discusses second-hand goods and seller guarantees in UK/EU terms; it says a shorter period may apply to second-hand goods, but not less than one year. Those statements are specific to the jurisdictions covered by that page and should not be applied to other countries. See Sony UK legal guarantee information.
