Nintendo Switch Sports vs. Wii Sports Resort: What’s Different?

By Freedom251 Team · · 3 min read

The main difference is the hardware: Nintendo Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch game controlled with Joy-Con, while Wii Sports Resort is a Wii game that requires Wii MotionPlus or a Wii Remote Plus. Their sports, multiplayer features, and accessory needs differ too, so choose based first on the console and controllers you have.

These are Nintendo’s listed product details, not results from an independent head-to-head test. The official pages do not establish that one game has more accurate motion controls or is more enjoyable. Nintendo Switch Sports product page · Wii Sports Resort product page

Are both games available on the same console?

No. Nintendo Switch Sports is for Nintendo Switch, while Wii Sports Resort is for Wii. Nintendo’s Switch Sports page also lists support on Switch 2; its FAQ covers compatible Joy-Con play, but says the game cannot be played in Handheld Mode. Wii Sports Resort is not a Switch version, so owning Switch Sports does not provide access to Resort’s activities. How do the sports and activities differ?

Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo lists eight activities: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara, its swordplay mode. The lineup combines familiar Wii Sports-style games with activities that are not named on the Resort product page, such as Chambara and Badminton. Nintendo Switch Sports product page

Wii Sports Resort

Resort is built around island activities. Nintendo highlights fencing, jet-skiing, and flying-disc challenges, among others. Because the official page does not provide a full list in the reviewed text, it would be misleading to treat those examples as a complete catalog or claim that every activity has a direct counterpart in Switch Sports. What controllers and accessories do you need?

For Nintendo Switch Sports

Use compatible Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode or Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Pro Controllers. A Leg Strap is used for some Soccer play; Nintendo includes one with the physical edition, while digital-edition owners can buy it separately. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap, so check your controller setup if that Soccer mode matters to you. Nintendo Switch Sports product page · Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ

  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

For Wii Sports Resort

You need a Wii Remote Plus or a Wii Remote fitted with Wii MotionPlus. If buying a used copy, verify that you have a compatible controller or accessory and check what is actually included in the listing; Nintendo’s product page does not establish the contents or condition of second-hand bundles. How does multiplayer and online play compare?

Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch Sports for 1–4 players on one system and 1–2 players online. Its online features include worldwide opponents and Pro League. Playing online requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; Nintendo says players without one can try a competition against computer opponents from Play Globally. Nintendo lists Wii Sports Resort for 1–4 players and describes competition with friends and family. The reviewed Resort page does not establish a current online-service comparison, so its player count should not be read as proof of online play. Wii Sports Resort product page

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if you have a compatible Switch setup, want its eight listed sports, or want its documented online modes. Confirm you have Joy-Con rather than relying on handheld or Pro Controller play.
  • Choose Wii Sports Resort if you have a Wii and MotionPlus-capable controls and specifically want its island activities.
  • Check the bundle before buying if you need an accessory: the Switch Sports physical edition includes a Leg Strap, while a Wii Sports Resort listing may or may not include the controller or MotionPlus hardware you need.

Nintendo describes Switch Sports as a continuation of the Wii Sports series, but the games are separate releases for different consoles with different activity lineups—not interchangeable editions of one game. Nintendo Switch Sports product page · Wii Sports Resort product page
