An antenna can bring in an over-the-air ABC or other local broadcast, but it does not provide games carried only on cable networks or streaming services. Check the game’s listed network and your home’s local reception forecast to know whether it will work for you.
Which college football games can an antenna receive?
A TV antenna receives local over-the-air broadcast stations. If a college football game is scheduled on your local ABC affiliate or another broadcast station, you may be able to watch it with an antenna, provided the station’s signal reaches your home.

ABC’s published 2026 schedule includes regular-season games and selected College Football Playoff games. That makes some games potentially available over the air, but the schedule alone does not establish whether a particular household can receive its local ABC station. ABC’s 2026 college football schedule identifies the network carrying each listed game.
Which games will an antenna not provide?
An antenna does not unlock cable channels or streaming-only broadcasts. College games are spread across local broadcast stations, cable and conference networks, and streaming outlets. ESPN’s 2026–27 schedule, for example, includes ABC alongside ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPN+, SEC Network+, and ACCNX. ESPN says some games are available exclusively through the ESPN App, via direct-to-consumer access or pay-TV authentication; those are not received simply by connecting an antenna. Schedules can change, so confirm the listing close to game day. ESPN’s 2026–27 schedule and distribution details distinguish its outlets.

ACC games illustrate why you need to check each matchup: the 2026 guide lists ABC and The CW as well as ESPN and ACC Network, and names selected games on FOX or FS1. An antenna can help with a local broadcast such as ABC when the station is receivable; it does not substitute for a package carrying a cable network. FOX Sports’ 2026 ACC guide lists the different outlets.
How to check whether you can watch a specific game
- Find the game’s current network listing. Check the schedule for the matchup and date. If it says ABC or another local broadcast station, an antenna may work; if it names a cable or streaming outlet, an antenna alone will not.
- Check the station’s signal at your address. Use the FCC Digital TV Reception Maps to see predicted digital-TV signals for your location. A map is a forecast, not a guarantee.
- Choose suitable reception equipment and placement. You need an antenna connected to a digital television or a converter box. Depending on location, an indoor or outdoor antenna may be suitable. The FCC map models an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground, so its estimate may not match indoor reception.
- For a non-broadcast game, verify a paid service’s coverage. Check that a TV or streaming package carries the listed network in your market, and confirm that it carries the game you want. Do not assume one subscription includes every college game.
Why reception may differ from the FCC map
The FCC says its reception maps estimate signals using an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. Actual strength can vary with terrain, building construction, nearby buildings and trees, weather, and reception hardware. The agency cautions: “Actual signal strength may vary based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, building construction, neighboring buildings and trees, weather, and specific reception hardware.” As a result, an indoor antenna may perform differently from the map’s modeled setup. The FCC map guidance explains these limits.

- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
The FCC’s consumer guidance says the appropriate antenna can be indoor or outdoor depending on location. Without your address, building conditions, and the station you want, there is no reliable way to predict whether your home will receive that station consistently. See the FCC’s guide, How can I watch a station over the air without a pay TV subscription?, for the basic equipment requirements.

| Game’s listed outlet | What an antenna can do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local broadcast station, such as ABC | Receive the station over the air if its signal reaches your home. | Confirm the game listing and check the station’s predicted signal for your address. |
| Cable or conference network, such as ESPN, SEC Network, or ACC Network | It does not provide the channel. | Find a TV or streaming service that carries the channel in your market. |
| Streaming-exclusive outlet, such as ESPN+ or an ESPN App exclusive | It does not provide the stream. | Check the current access terms and confirm that the game is included. |
An antenna is useful for local broadcast access, not as an all-games solution. For non-broadcast games, the service lineup and local availability matter, and the sources cited here do not establish that any one subscription covers every matchup.
