Yes, but only when the game produces enough frames and the phone can sustain them. A higher-refresh display can make supported games look smoother and show new frames more often. It does not make a game render faster by itself: a game capped at 60 frames per second (FPS) does not become a 120-FPS game on a 120-hertz (Hz) screen. Higher refresh can also use more power, while touch response depends on more than display Hz.
Refresh rate and FPS are different
Refresh rate is how often a display can update, measured in hertz. FPS is how often a game produces a new frame. The screen can show a newly rendered frame only when the game and device deliver one; otherwise, the display may show the same frame again.

For example, a game that renders at 60 FPS cannot supply 120 distinct game frames each second simply because the phone has a 120 Hz panel. Android’s game-development guidance says that when a display refresh rate is above a game’s target frame rate, the higher rate provides no benefit for that game and increases power consumption (Android Developers).
When a game supports a higher frame rate and the phone maintains it, more frequent frames can make motion look smoother. The result also depends on frame pacing: frames delivered at uneven intervals may look juddery even if an average FPS counter seems high. Android recommends coordinating frame delivery with the display and using presentation timestamps to avoid presenting frames too early (Android Developers; Frame rate).

Does 120 Hz make games run at 120 FPS?
No. A 120 Hz setting is the display’s capability, not a promise that a particular game will render at 120 FPS. The game may cap its frame rate at 30 or 60 FPS, or it may offer higher rates only on selected devices. The operating system can also decline an app’s requested display rate; Android notes that battery saver or a higher-priority surface can prevent the requested mode from taking effect (Android Developers).
Check the game’s own graphics or performance settings and verify the available frame-rate option on your specific phone. A phone’s advertised maximum refresh rate is not proof of high-FPS support in every title.

Does a higher refresh rate improve touch response?
It can help the display show a newly rendered image sooner, but refresh rate is only one part of touch-to-display latency. Touch sensing, operating-system input handling, game logic, rendering and frame scheduling all contribute. A claim about a 120 Hz display is not the same as a claim about 120 Hz touch sampling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Android 15’s adaptive refresh behavior can raise the display rate after a touch event and keep it elevated briefly after the finger is lifted, but this applies to supported devices and does not establish a universal touch-sampling rate or latency (Android Developers). Qualcomm describes Game Quick Touch as reducing touch-to-display latency “by up to 20%”; that is a vendor claim about its feature, not a general measurement of what changing a phone from 60 to 120 Hz does (Qualcomm).

What limits the benefit during play?
Game support and frame-rate caps
A game may not offer a high-FPS mode, even if the display supports 90 or 120 Hz. The relevant check is the selectable FPS in the specific game on the specific device, not the panel specification alone.
System settings and resolution
Refresh options can depend on the phone’s model, selected resolution and power mode. Samsung, for example, says some devices do not support 120 Hz at WQHD+ and may switch to Standard at that resolution; Power saving mode also sets the screen to Standard. These restrictions vary by model, so check the settings and support information for the exact handset (Samsung Support).

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Heat and sustained performance
High CPU and GPU use generates heat. Android explains that a device may reduce CPU or GPU speeds to cool down, which can lower performance during a long session (Android Developers). A brief high-FPS result does not show whether a phone will maintain that performance over time.
Battery use
Higher display refresh rates use more power. Samsung describes Standard mode as providing the best battery life and High mode as using more battery; Adaptive mode adjusts the rate on supported models (Samsung Support). The practical tradeoff depends on the phone, game and settings, but leaving a high-refresh mode enabled can shorten time between charges.

What studies can—and cannot—tell you
A study by Bingxin Li and colleagues, accepted in 2025, tested 76 people scrolling on 60, 90 and 120 Hz mobile displays. Participants reported improved perceived smoothness and reduced screen jitter at 90 and 120 Hz compared with 60 Hz; subjective ratings differed negligibly between 90 and 120 Hz for most scrolling tasks (Li et al.). Those results concern scrolling perception, not game scores, reaction times or competitive advantage.
A 2024 study record describes 26 participants in a first-person-shooter test at 30, 60, 120, 144 and 240 Hz, measuring scores, accuracy and self-ratings. The accessible abstract record gives the study design but not its results, so it cannot establish whether higher refresh improved those outcomes (Study record).
How to judge a phone or setting for gaming
- Game-specific FPS: Confirm the game offers the frame rate you want on that device.
- Stability over time: Look for consistent performance during a long session, not just a peak counter or menu value.
- Frame pacing: Smooth, evenly spaced frames matter alongside the average FPS.
- Touch-to-display latency: Use measurements that cover the full input-to-display path; touch-sampling figures alone do not establish it.
- Heat and battery: Consider how long the phone sustains performance and how quickly the higher-refresh mode drains power.
- Resolution and modes: Check whether the desired refresh rate is available at your chosen resolution and with your power settings.
- Overall device fit: Processor, cooling, battery and game compatibility matter alongside the refresh-rate headline.
Do not assume a jump from 90 to 120 Hz is automatically twice as beneficial as a jump from 60 to 90 Hz. The cited scrolling study found negligible subjective-rating differences between 90 and 120 Hz for most tested tasks, but it did not compare gaming performance.
