Yes, it can. Rendering more pixels may increase graphics work and power use, but the effect depends on the phone, its settings and what you are doing. There is no reliable universal percentage or number of minutes you can expect to save by lowering resolution.
Why resolution can affect battery use
A higher resolution means more pixels to render. That can add work for the graphics hardware, particularly during graphics-heavy tasks. But resolution is only one part of a phone’s power use: display hardware, brightness, refresh rate, software, radios and workload all matter. The sources available do not establish a controlled result that applies across current phones.

Android’s battery accounting also does not directly measure current draw. The Android Open Source Project says BatteryStats collects component timing information and uses manufacturer-provided power-profile values to approximate consumption. Battery breakdowns are therefore estimates, not a direct, universal measurement of the power penalty from a resolution setting. Android Open Source Project: Power profiles and BatteryStats.
What matters alongside resolution
- Brightness: A brighter display can use more power. AOSP’s power-profile documentation illustrates this with example values of 200 mA for
screen.onat minimum brightness and an additional 100–300 mA forscreen.fullat maximum brightness. These are illustrative AOSP values, not measurements for every phone or estimates of savings from lowering resolution. AOSP example power values. - Refresh rate and workload: A demanding game or other graphics-heavy task is a more plausible setting for resolution to matter than a static screen. Frame rate and graphics quality also affect the comparison; the available sources do not quantify the resolution effect for modern phones generally.
- Phone design and conditions: Display size and technology, processor activity, software, network use, battery condition and temperature can change total drain. When comparing phones, matching the brightness-slider percentage is not enough: equal percentages need not produce equal actual brightness. Qualcomm recommends controlling brightness and comparing equivalent performance or quality. Its discussion dates to 2013, so it is useful for measurement principles rather than current phone rankings. Qualcomm on measuring power consumption.
Why overall battery-life figures do not answer this question
A phone’s advertised battery-life estimate typically reflects a mix of activities rather than a test that changes only resolution. Google says its Pixel battery-life estimates use a median user profile across a mix of activities, and actual life depends on many factors. That kind of estimate cannot show how much a particular resolution setting alone changes runtime. Google Pixel specifications and battery-life qualifications.

How to compare resolution settings on your phone
If your phone lets you choose between resolutions, a same-device comparison is the most useful practical check. Change only the resolution between runs and keep the other conditions as consistent as possible:
- Set the same brightness and refresh rate for both runs.
- Use the same task for the same amount of screen-on time, with comparable frame rate or quality if it is a game or video.
- Keep network conditions and power-saving settings consistent, and run the tests at a similar temperature.
- Start each run at a similar battery level, repeat the comparison, and record the drain. Treat the phone’s battery estimate as an estimate, not a lab-grade current measurement.
Specialized power measurements can use an instrumented phone supplied by an external source; that is not the ordinary consumer method. A casual setting test can suggest whether the difference is noticeable on your device, but it cannot establish a result for other models.
