ASIC Quality is not an FPS score or a benchmark grade. It is an estimate related to a GPU chip’s electrical behavior, historically including leakage and voltage characteristics. A higher percentage may suggest better voltage efficiency at a particular operating point, but it does not establish that the card will render games faster.
To judge graphics-card speed, compare measured performance in the same game or workload, at the same resolution and settings, on comparable systems. Then check sustained clock speeds, power draw, temperatures, memory behavior, cooling and driver conditions. Those live factors determine whether a GPU can maintain performance; a static ASIC percentage cannot.

What ASIC Quality actually measures
ASIC stands for application-specific integrated circuit. In a graphics card, the ASIC is the main GPU silicon. The “ASIC Quality” percentage is a software-reported estimate associated with characteristics of that chip, not a complete score for the finished graphics card.

The older GPU-Z reading was generation-dependent and was mainly discussed in terms of leakage and voltage behavior. Two chips from the same GPU family can require slightly different voltages to operate at a given frequency. Historically, enthusiasts treated a higher reading as a possible sign that the chip could reach a target clock with less voltage, or with less electrical loss, under a particular condition.

That interpretation has important limits:
- The percentage is not a universal grade shared consistently by every GPU generation.
- It does not describe the card’s cooler, fan profile, memory chips, voltage-regulation circuitry, board power limit or BIOS.
- It does not measure the card’s current condition or guarantee a particular overclock.
- It is not a certification that one retail card is better built than another.
In other words, ASIC Quality is a chip characteristic estimate. Gaming performance is an outcome produced by the entire card and system.
Why older readings should not be treated as a universal scale
ASIC behavior varies with GPU architecture and generation. A percentage that enthusiasts considered “high” on one generation cannot automatically be ranked against the same percentage on another. Even within one generation, the reading does not tell you how a specific game will behave.
A higher value can be consistent with lower voltage requirements at one operating point, but that is a broad historical tendency rather than a promise about an individual sample. The reading cannot tell you whether the card has a strong cooler, whether its memory is fast, or whether its firmware allows a high power limit.
What the newer HWiNFO reading means
HWiNFO version 8.54 added ASIC Quality reporting for newer NVIDIA GPUs. The change was recorded in the version history released on September 30, 2026, and reported by iTechGuides on October 11, 2026. The newer presentation has been described as a model-relative display of NVIDIA’s SPEEDO value.
That does not turn the number into an FPS measurement. The exact conversion, model-specific boundaries and complete compatibility list are not established in the available documentation. Treat the value as meaningful only within the context of the same GPU model and the same reporting method. Do not rank a 70% reading on one model against a 70% reading on a different model as though both percentages used one universal performance scale.
Why ASIC Quality does not predict FPS
Frame rate depends on the work the GPU completes per second. That depends on architecture, shader and ray-tracing resources, memory bandwidth, software scheduling, clock speed and the workload itself. A chip-level electrical estimate does not capture all of those variables.

Modern GPUs also change clocks continuously. NVIDIA’s System Management Interface documentation and its support guidance on clock-speed throttling describe dynamic responses to GPU utilization, power limits and thermal conditions. A card can report a high ASIC percentage yet reduce its clock because the cooler is saturated or the board has reached its power limit. Another card with a lower percentage can maintain a higher sustained clock because it has better cooling, a more permissive BIOS or a stronger power-delivery design.
Even the same card can produce different frame rates in different situations:
- A GPU-limited game at 4K may expose thermal or power limits that are invisible at 1080p.
- A CPU-limited game may show nearly identical FPS from two cards despite different GPU characteristics.
- Ray tracing, shader compilation, memory capacity and driver behavior can change the result independently of ASIC Quality.
- Short benchmark peaks may look impressive while sustained clocks fall during a longer session.
Therefore, ASIC Quality cannot answer the practical question “How many frames per second will this card deliver?” Only a controlled benchmark can do that.
What to compare instead
| Comparison factor | What it tells you | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Same-workload benchmark | Actual rendering performance for a game, application or test | Use the same resolution, graphics preset, API, upscaling mode and ray-tracing settings |
| Sustained core clock | Whether the GPU maintains its operating frequency during the run | Record the clock over the whole workload, not only the initial boost value |
| Memory clock and capacity | How the card handles bandwidth and large data sets | Capacity and configuration can matter more than a small core-clock difference |
| Power draw and power limit | Whether the card is constrained electrically | A higher limit can sustain speed but may increase heat, noise and consumption |
| Temperature and cooling | Whether heat causes clock reduction | Ambient temperature, case airflow, fan curve and cooler design affect the result |
| Drivers and system | How software and the rest of the PC influence performance | Use the same driver, CPU, memory configuration and background-load conditions |
This set of measurements answers the speed question directly. ASIC Quality can be recorded as supplementary information, but it should not replace any of them.
How to compare two graphics cards correctly
1. Define the workload
Choose the games or applications you actually use. Record the exact title and version, test scene, graphics preset, resolution, refresh target, ray-tracing setting and upscaling or frame-generation mode. A result from one workload cannot automatically be generalized to every other workload.
2. Standardize the test system
Keep the processor, system memory, operating-system build, driver version, storage configuration and background applications the same. Set both cards to comparable default profiles before testing. If one card is overclocked or undervolted, label it clearly instead of presenting the result as a stock comparison.

3. Measure a repeatable run
Run the same scene for long enough to reach normal operating temperature. Capture average FPS and, where available, one-percent-low or frame-time data. Repeat the run to identify inconsistent results. A brief first pass can include a temporary boost clock that the card cannot hold.
4. Log operating behavior
Alongside FPS, record core clock, memory clock, GPU utilization, board power, temperature and fan speed. If the clock declines as temperature or power rises, note the limiting condition. This explains why two cards with similar theoretical specifications can deliver different sustained results.
5. Check for a bottleneck
If GPU utilization remains well below full load while one or more CPU threads are busy, the test may be CPU-limited. In that case, ASIC Quality is especially irrelevant to the observed FPS difference. Increase resolution or graphics quality, or use a more GPU-heavy scene, if the goal is to compare graphics-card throughput.
6. Compare like with like
Compare cards from the same model class and test them under the same conditions. A model-relative ASIC value from a utility can be noted, but it should never be used to bridge a performance gap between different architectures or product tiers.
Does a high ASIC percentage help overclocking?
Not reliably. The historical voltage interpretation explains why overclockers paid attention to the reading: a chip that needs less voltage for a target frequency may have different efficiency or heat behavior at that operating point. But maximum overclock depends on many additional limits, including cooling, voltage controls, power delivery, firmware, memory quality and the particular workload.
A high percentage does not guarantee a higher stable clock. It also does not guarantee lower temperatures, because temperature depends on power, cooler performance, contact quality, fan behavior, ambient conditions and case airflow. Conversely, a lower reading does not prove that a card is incapable of a useful overclock.

For undervolting, judge the result by measured stability, power and sustained performance. Reduce voltage in small steps, test the games or applications you use, and watch for driver resets, visual corruption, application crashes or performance loss. The ASIC number can provide context, but it cannot select a stable voltage for you.

When the value comes from an older GPU-Z workflow
Read it as a generation-specific estimate related mainly to electrical behavior. It is useful only as background information and should not be described as a speed rating. Do not infer a guaranteed FPS uplift, cooler operation or superior card quality from the number.
When the value comes from HWiNFO 8.54 or later
First confirm that the utility supports your particular newer NVIDIA GPU. The reported value may represent a model-relative presentation of NVIDIA’s SPEEDO value. Because the exact conversion and boundaries are not fully documented, use it for observations within the same model rather than as a cross-model ranking.
When two utilities disagree
Different tools may use different sensors, definitions or reporting methods. Check the utility version and GPU support notes, then avoid combining percentages from separate methods into one ranking. For a performance decision, return to controlled benchmarks and operating logs.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Mistake: treating the percentage like a benchmark score
Fix: Require a same-workload FPS or frame-time result before making a speed claim.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistake: comparing percentages across different GPU models
Fix: Keep model-relative readings within the same GPU model and reporting method. Compare different models using measured performance instead.
Best Value
Mistake: using a peak boost clock as sustained speed
Fix: Log clocks through a complete run and identify power or thermal reductions.
Mistake: ignoring memory and cooling
Fix: Check memory capacity and configuration, cooler design, temperatures, fan speed and board power behavior alongside the benchmark.
Mistake: assuming a game result represents every game
Fix: Test several workloads that reflect your use. CPU-limited, rasterized and ray-traced scenes can respond differently.

A practical buying decision framework
If you are choosing between two cards, use ASIC Quality only as an optional note after the following questions have been answered:
- Which card has better benchmark results in the games or applications you use?
- Were those results measured at the resolution and settings you need?
- Does each card sustain its clocks without unacceptable temperature, noise or power draw?
- Is memory capacity adequate for your workload now and at your intended settings?
- Are the driver, BIOS and system conditions comparable?
If the answers favor one card, a different ASIC percentage should not overturn the evidence. If benchmark results are close, choose based on sustained behavior, acoustics, efficiency, features, warranty and price rather than assuming the higher percentage is faster.
The bottom line
A higher ASIC Quality percentage does not mean a faster graphics card. It is an estimate tied to GPU electrical characteristics, with older readings associated mainly with leakage and voltage behavior and newer HWiNFO reporting described as a model-relative NVIDIA SPEEDO presentation. Neither is an FPS score.
Use repeatable, same-setting benchmarks and monitor sustained clocks, power, temperature, memory and system bottlenecks. Those measurements show the performance your card can actually deliver.
