No—not necessarily. Four 10-hour days make a 40-hour compressed workweek: you work the same weekly hours over fewer, longer days. A reduced-hours four-day week cuts the hours worked. Because employers and organizations use “four-day week” differently, check the weekly hours, daily schedule, and pay rather than relying on the label.
What does “four-day workweek” mean?
The phrase can describe either fewer workdays, fewer working hours, or both. The distinction matters: having an extra day away from work does not by itself mean that your total working time has been reduced.

- Compressed week, or 4×10: four 10-hour days, totaling 40 hours. The workweek is compressed, but the weekly hours are unchanged.
- Reduced-hours four-day week: fewer weekly hours worked across four days. The 4 Day Week Foundation defines its campaign model as 32 hours or fewer over four days with no reduction in pay. That is the Foundation’s definition, not a universal legal or employment standard.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), describing the 2022 UK trial, says a four-day week meant a meaningful reduction in working time, typically achieved by taking a day off. Professor Brendan Burchell, the trial’s qualitative research lead, explained that working longer days without reducing total hours was not included. A four-day week can also mean five shorter days if the weekly hours are meaningfully reduced.
So when an employer announces a four-day week, ask whether it means fewer days, fewer hours, unchanged pay, or some combination. Results from reduced-hours trials should not be assumed to apply to a 4×10 schedule.

The table describes two common models, not every arrangement. Daily hours, pay, and the days off can vary. What did four-day-week trials report?
Trial results are evidence about the participating employers and employees, not a guarantee for other workplaces. The studies below concern different pilots and should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison of reduced-hours weeks with 4×10 schedules.

The UK trial, June–December 2022
UKRI’s 18 July 2023 account describes a six-month trial involving 61 companies and around 2,900 employees. It reports that 56 companies (92%) continued the arrangement after the trial and 18 made it permanent. At the end of the trial, 39% of employees reported feeling less stressed and 71% had reduced burnout; staff leaving participating companies fell by 57% over the trial period.

4 Day Week Global’s longer-term pilot report
In its long-term pilot report, accessed 4 October 2026, 4 Day Week Global reports a 69% reduction in employee burnout, 57% of participants reporting increased work ability, a 32% decrease in attrition, a 15% increase in revenue over the pilot, and 95% of employees wanting to continue. The organization says respondents came from the US, Canada, the UK, and Ireland, and presents some results as a baseline-to-12-month comparison. Start by defining the arrangement in measurable terms, then work out how customers and colleagues will be covered. The 4 Day Week Foundation recommends setting a business-specific productivity measure before the change so the employer can compare results with a baseline.

- Specify hours and pay: document weekly hours and pay before and after the change; say plainly whether hours are reduced or compressed.
- Choose the time off: Friday or Monday may suit a whole organization; Wednesday or staggered days may suit teams that need coverage throughout the week. The Foundation describes these as possible patterns, not a required schedule.
- Plan service coverage: departments or groups can take different days off when customer-facing work requires it.
- Set the measure: choose a productivity measure relevant to the business and record a baseline before the schedule begins.
- Consult staff and check terms: agree how the change affects contracts, holidays, staffing, and local requirements rather than assuming the “four-day week” label answers those questions.
